Dance of the Dragons
In King's Landing, during a meeting of King Tommen Baratheon's small council, Mace Tyrell is confident that, as soon as Paxter Redwyne's fleet sweeps the ironborn from the seas, his sons Willas and Garlan will easily retake the Shield Islands. When Mace says that a better marriage should be made for Princess Myrcella Baratheon than with Trystane Martell, Tommen's regent, Kevan Lannister, thinks that Mace wants to marry Willas to her. [16]

A Feast for Crows
In King's Landing, Lord Mace Tyrell rejects Queen Regent Cersei Lannister's suggestion that he is needed in the Reach, saying that his son Willas is capable and intelligent. [4]

After the Ironborn takeover of the Shield Islands, Willas supposedly sends messengers to Lord Leyton Hightower, ordering him to reinforce his defenses at Oldtown. Willas also correctly deduces that the Ironborn did not follow the coast when attacking the Shield Islands, in order to catch the Shield Island lords by surprise. However, Queen Cersei ignores his reports, preferring to believe he was incompetent and making excuses. Cersei also refuses to send the Redwyne fleet to transport the army Willas is gathering until the siege of Dragonstone is over. [15]

In Sunspear, Princess Arianne Martell recalls her many failed engagements, including the time she tried to travel to Highgarden to meet Willas. [12]

A Storm of Swords
In King's Landing, Lady Olenna Tyrell plans to marry Sansa Stark to her grandson Willas. [5] Sansa readily accepts the engagement offer, but the plan is thwarted after she reveals the information to Dontos Hollard in the godswood of the Red Keep. [7] Lord Tywin Lannister discovers the plan through Lord Petyr Baelish and hastily marries Sansa to his son Tyrion. [6] [11]

Tywin also offers his daughter, Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, Willas's hand in marriage to silence rumors of her incest with her brother, Ser Jaime. [6] Although Mace Tyrell appears interested, his mother Olenna convinces him otherwise, and the Tyrells refuse the offer. [14]

Game of Thrones
In King's Landing, Willas Tyrell is ordered to swear fealty to the new king Joffrey Baratheon, along with his father, brothers and uncles. [13]

Willas is the eldest son of Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden, and Lady Alerie Hightower. During his first tournament, in which Willas participated as a squire [2] at a young age, at his father's wish, he competed against Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne, who threw him from his horse. Unfortunately, Willas's foot got caught in the stirrup during the fall, and he pulled the horse on top of him, crushing his leg and leaving him crippled. [9]

Although the incident exacerbated the considerable and historic enmity between Houses Tyrell and Martell, Willas held no grudge against Oberyn, and the two maintained correspondence for a long time, sharing a passion for horses. [9] Since the accident, Willas has dedicated himself to academic studies, as he cannot be a knight. [10] Willas's grandmother, Olenna Tyrell, despite having a negative opinion of her son Mace, has a very positive opinion of her grandson. [5]

His younger brother, Garlan, was chubby as a boy. To protect him from a possible derogatory nickname, like the one given to his uncle Garth "the Rude", Willas was the first to call him "Garlan the Gallant". [11] When Willas's sister, Margaery, was a girl, he used to read to her and draw stars for her. [5]

Princess Arianne Martell considered marrying Willas, but her father, Prince Doran, refused to send her to Highgarden to meet him. Nevertheless, she attempted to travel there alone, with the help of her cousin Tyene Sand, but her uncle, Prince Oberyn Martell, intercepted them in Vaith and brought them back to Sunspear. [12]

Willas is crippled, with a bad leg. He is described as intelligent,[4] studious, educated and kind, and is known for breeding the finest falcons, dogs and horses in the Seven Kingdoms.[5][6] He sometimes hunts with an eagle.[7] Willas is also described as kind and courteous, enjoying reading books and stargazing.[6] Petyr Baelish considers Willas kind, pious and benevolent, but also boring.[8]
