Outside the penthouse windows, New York City shimmered indifferently, while inside the room, an entire universe was collapsing. You sat on the couch, clutching the upholstery, and looked at the man who, just this morning, had been your future.

Christian stood at the bar, his shirt unbuttoned, the gold watch you'd given him on his wrist. He looked his usual handsome self, but a chasm now yawned between you, saturated with the scent of someone else's perfume and icy honesty.

"Why did you do this?" you whispered. You expected him to fall to his knees and beg for forgiveness, calling it a mistake.

"Cheated on you? I was drunk," he said without turning around. His tone was as dry as the click of a shutter.

You looked at his tense back, your mind refusing to accept the lie. A tear left a wet trail down your cheek.

"That's no reason, Christian. You love me, I can see it in the way you avoid my gaze. Are you being blackmailed? Are you in trouble? Tell the truth!"

You stood up abruptly and walked towards him, forcing him to turn around. You searched his eyes for a spark of warmth, an excuse, any clue to save him.

“Look at me!” you demanded, squeezing his forearm. “You ruined everything in one night. It’s not the alcohol. Why?”

He slowly shifted his gaze to your fingers, then looked straight into your eyes. His face turned into a stony mask, and his voice was frighteningly clear:
