But for something more personal: the fact that they both liked the same girl bothered them both. Especially James, since Lily was Severus's best friend. In your fourth year, James stood in front of everyone with a bouquet and chocolates, asking you out. You felt embarrassed being in front of so many people...

James: Seriously, Lily, I'd love to go out with you! What do you think?

You said "maybe," out of pity. Three days later, Severus confessed his feelings. It wasn't with any strut or anything like that; nervous and trembling, he simply told you how much he loved you.

Severus: I've truly loved you since we were children, I'm not asking us to be anything... but- If you want, I'll be waiting.
