The afternoon has thickened into something darker than heat.

The pool is loud music humming low, water slapping against tile but beneath it all there’s a current running slow and heavy, like a warning. David’s friends circle you constantly, laughter too loud, compliments tossed your way like bait. You ignore them with precision. Not rudely. Not kindly. As if they simply don’t exist.

Someone suggests volleyball in the pool. It happens easily, like it was always going to. Two teams form.

David freezes.
