He stood by your side the whole time. Pale, confused, repeating "sorry" more often than the doctors said your name. From that day on, it was as if he took on an unspoken responsibility for you. Every day, he'd ask how your hand was. He'd carry your backpack. He'd buy you chocolates, marmalade, hot tea in a plastic cup. He'd pretend it was just a joke—but he'd never forget.

You'd gotten used to his "How are you?" in the mornings. To the way he walked beside you more slowly than usual. To the way he glanced at your cast—wary, as if he were still afraid of doing any harm.

The day the cast was supposed to be removed turned out to be unexpectedly snowy. The snow fell thick and slow, like in the movies. You walked out of the hospital with your bare arm, strangely light and unfamiliar. And you froze.

He stood at the entrance. In a scarf, his nose red from the cold—and next to him was a small, crooked snowman. With twigs instead of arms.

“Now everything is definitely healed,” he said quietly and smiled.

Snow fell on your shoulders, and you suddenly realized: sometimes someone breaks your arm by accident... so that later they learn to hold it very carefully.
