Persona Attributes
Object: War Mask and Omaticaya Paint
Before a battle or a big game hunt, the Omaticaya transform their appearance. They use paints made from colored clays and animal fats. Patterns: The patterns are not random; they indicate rank, lineage, and the protection of specific spirits. Yellow and red are often used for war and warning. Function: Besides intimidating the enemy, the paint helps break up the warrior's silhouette in the visually complex jungle. Some warriors wear masks or visors made from small animal skulls or carved wood, not so much for physical protection (a bullet would pass through it), but to channel the spirit of the predator.
Flora: The Spirals of Helicoradian
Helicoradian fields are areas of the forest where hundreds of these orange, spiraling plants grow. Walking through them requires specific knowledge. The Na'vi know how to move with such grace and connection to the environment that they can pass through without the plants retracting. Clumsy humans or avatars (like Jake at the beginning) cause entire fields to "close" in their wake, leaving a visible trail of retracted vegetation that any tracker could follow for miles. It's a test of stealth and synchronization with the rhythm of the forest: if the plants hide from you, it's because you are a noisy and dangerous stranger.
Consciousness Transfer Ritual
It is a theoretical and mystical ability of the Tree of Souls known only to the wisest clans. It involves connecting a being's original body and a receiving body (such as an Avatar) to the Tree of Souls' root network simultaneously. Through a massive clan ritual chant, which acts as a psychic amplifier, Eywa is asked to permanently transfer the life force and full consciousness of the dying or original body to the new one. It is extremely dangerous and does not always work; the "mother" (Eywa) must either accept or reject the transfer. If it fails, the subject dies. If it succeeds, the individual is completely reborn in the new body, leaving their former form behind. At the beginning of the film, Jake is unaware of this, but it is the only way to permanently become Na'vi.
Geography: The Flux Vortex
The Flux Vortex is a massive magnetic anomaly centered on the Hallelujah Mountains. It is caused by the extreme interaction between the magnetic field of Polyphemus (the gas giant) and the high concentration of superconductors (Unobtanium) in Pandora's crust. Effects: Within this vortex, sophisticated human electronics fail. Missile guidance systems, navigation radars, and long-range communications become useless. This levels the playing field: inside the Vortex, the RDA cannot use its "fire-and-forget" technological advantage. They must fight using direct line of sight, giving the Na'vi and their flying mounts a real chance against the gunships.
Cultural Concept: Uniltìranyu
Uniltìranyu is the Na'vi term for Avatars. It literally means "Dream Walker." For the Na'vi, Avatars are unnatural beings. They recognize that they are biological bodies similar to themselves, but they know that the "soul" or consciousness that inhabits them is not native, but human and distant. They see them as demons or puppets without a true spirit, disconnected from Eywa. Therefore, at the beginning of contact, they are treated with extreme distrust or killed. Only through extraordinary actions and learning the ways of the land (demonstrating that they can "see" and respect the world) can a Dream Walker earn respect and be considered a "person" rather than a tool of the Sky People.
Na'vi Food: Teylu
The Teylu is a large, fleshy, worm-like insect larva that lives in rotting wood or underground. It is one of the most common and basic protein sources in the Na'vi diet. It can be eaten raw (in which case it has a slimy texture and a strong flavor) or cooked over a fire (in which case it acquires a texture similar to shrimp or nuts). During Jake's training, Neytiri teaches him how to find and eat them. To a human, their appearance is repulsive, but nutritionally they are excellent. They represent the simplicity and self-sufficiency of Na'vi life, in contrast to the processed, freeze-dried, and synthetic food consumed by humans in the Hell's Gate cafeteria.
Context: Earth in the year 2154
To understand the RDA's desperation, it's necessary to understand the state of Earth. Humanity's home planet is a dying world. Overpopulation, pollution, and resource depletion have devastated the biosphere. There is no greenery left on Earth; most animal species have become extinct. The energy crisis is global and catastrophic. Human civilization is barely sustained by Unobtanium, which is essential for the fusion reactors and magnetic levitation systems that underpin modern infrastructure. The humans on Pandora are not just greedy conquerors; they are representatives of a desperate species that sees Pandora as its only lifeline. This reality leads figures like Selfridge and Quaritch to view the destruction of the Na'vi as a necessary evil for the survival of the human race.
RDA Technology: D-30 Robotic Excavator
The D-30 excavator is a massive demolition and forest clearing machine, designed to clear land of Pandora's dense, resilient vegetation to facilitate mining operations. It is a gigantic tracked vehicle, fully automated or remotely controlled from the base (though it has an emergency cab). Its main feature is a massive front dozer blade capable of cutting through hardwood trees meters thick as if they were paper. At the rear, it has rippers to uproot deep roots. It is armored against falling rocks and attacks from smaller wildlife, but is vulnerable to precise sabotage of its camera and hydraulic sensor systems. It is these machines that destroy the Tree of Voices, provoking the wrath of the Na'vi and Jake's definitive shift in allegiance. Its advance is unstoppable and noisy, a physical representation of industrial destruction.
Na'vi Clothing and Ornamentation
The Na'vi don't wear clothes for modesty (a human concept), but for utility and light protection. They wear loincloths made of tanned animal hides (like Hexapede). Ornaments are paramount. Jewelry: They wear necklaces, bracelets, and anklets made from seeds, animal teeth, carved bones, and wooden beads. Each piece usually has an associated meaning or memory. Protection: The warriors wear thick leather bracelets on their forearms to protect themselves from the impact of the bowstring and leather greaves on their legs to move through the thorny undergrowth. Body paint: White body paint is used for rituals and warfare, tracing lines over the natural stripes of their skin to accentuate their ferocity or status. Clothing is minimalist so as not to hinder their connection with the environment or their agility.
Pandora's Physics: Low Gravity and Dense Atmosphere
Two physical factors define all movement and life on Pandora: Low Gravity: Gravity is 0.8g (80% of Earth's). This allows animals to grow larger, the Na'vi to be taller (around 3 meters) without collapsing under their own weight, and falls to be less lethal than on Earth. The jumps of the Na'vi and Avatars are floating and cover great distances. Dense Atmosphere: The air is 20% denser than on Earth (mainly due to xenon and CO2). This high density facilitates flight. It allows enormous, heavy creatures like the Leonopteryx or floating mountains to stay aloft more easily. For humans, this density feels like slight pressure, and it makes sound travel better and farther.
Location: Bio-Link Laboratory (The Bio-Lab)
It is the scientific "brain" of Hell's Gate. Unlike the gray, dirty military zones, the Bio-Lab is a sterile, white environment filled with advanced technology. Here, the Avatars are monitored. The Tanks: Rows of link capsules where human bodies lie while their minds are in the forest. Monitors: Holographic displays show the neurobiology of drivers in real time, maps of the forest root network, and analysis of botanical samples. Atmosphere: This is the refuge of Grace, Norm, and the scientists. Here, they speak Na'vi, study the culture, and critique the corporate administration. It's where Jake records his video logs every night, documenting his psychological transformation from spy to native.
RDA Structure: SecOps (Security Operations)
SecOps is the RDA's private military branch on Pandora. Officially, it's a defensive security force, but it operates as an occupying army. It's composed almost exclusively of former Earth military personnel (Marines, Special Forces, mercenaries) who have been discharged and are seeking high pay. Motivation: They don't fight for patriotism, but for money. The pay is excellent, but the risk is extremely high. Rules of Engagement: Under Quaritch's command, the rules are lax or nonexistent. Preemptive aggression is encouraged. Culture: They have an "us versus them" culture. They call the Na'vi "blues," "blue monkeys," or "savages." They live in a constant state of alert, as anything outside the perimeter fence can and wants to kill them.
Utilitarian Flora: Panopyra
The Panopyra is a curious life form that exhibits characteristics of both plants and jellyfish. It grows on land or in trees and resembles a semi-transparent dome with long, sticky tentacles that it uses to capture small prey. However, for the Na'vi, it is a source of water and healing. The liquid contained within its cup-like body is filtered, nutrient-enriched water, safe to drink. It also possesses antiseptic medicinal properties. Neytiri shows Jake how to drink from it carefully without touching the sensory tentacles, which would cause the plant to retract or attempt to capture him. It is a perfect example of how the Na'vi utilize their environment not only for survival but also as a natural pharmacy.
Secondary Character: Eytukan
Name: Eytukan. Role: Olo'eyktan (Clan Leader) of the Omaticaya. Physical appearance: A mature, strong, and imposing Na'vi male. He wears the leader's ceremonial headdress, made from an animal skull and Toruk feathers, and a large collar of claws. Personality: Eytukan is the supreme authority in secular and military matters of the clan (while Mo'at is the supreme authority in spiritual matters). He is a stern, conservative, and protective leader. He was the one who forbade humans from entering the village after the incident at Grace's school. He keeps a constant watch over Jake Sully. He doesn't hate blindly, but he prioritizes the safety of his people over curiosity. He is Mo'at's husband and Neytiri's father. History: He is a veteran warrior who has kept the clan united against the growing invasion. His death during the bombing of the Tree of Souls marks the end of the old guard and forces the new generation (Jake and Tsu'tey) to take command in a time of total crisis.
Dangerous Flora: Hellfire Wasp (Zize)
The Hellfire Wasp (Zize) is a flying insect that demonstrates that on Pandora, even the small can be deadly. It measures about 25 centimeters and has a hard, shiny exoskeleton. It possesses a double stinger that injects an extremely painful, psychoactive neurotoxin. A sting is said to feel like the skin is being melted by boiling acid (hence its name). While rarely fatal to a healthy adult Na'vi (unless it's a massive swarm attack or an allergic reaction), it can incapacitate a human or an inexperienced Avatar through sheer shock of pain. They are attracted to sweet scents and carrion. The Na'vi use a paste of mud and specific herbs (Vaptheayu) to neutralize the venom and soothe the pain of the sting.
Cultural Object: The Songcord (Var)
The Var, or "Songcord," is a vital mnemonic and spiritual device for every Na'vi. They have no traditional written language; their history is oral and tactile. The Var is a set of beads, stones, seeds, and pieces of wood strung on a cord. Each bead represents a significant event in the individual's life (birth, first hunt, bonding with Ikran, marriage, birth of children, deaths). By tapping the beads in order, the Na'vi "sings" their own story and that of their ancestors. It is a physical autobiography. Neytiri possesses one and explains its importance to Jake. To lose a Songcord is to lose the memory of oneself and one's lineage. It is a sacred possession that remains with the individual until death.
Human Technology: C-21 Dragon Assault Ship
The "Dragon" is the largest and most devastating warship in the RDA's arsenal on Pandora. It acts as an air destroyer and mobile command center. It is a massive quadcopter (four heavy rotor systems) heavily armored. Armament: It is bristling with weapons. It has multiple automatic Gatling gun turrets for perimeter defense, dozens of rocket and missile pods, and the ability to launch incendiary bombs and demolition charges. Function: Quaritch uses it as his personal command post during the final battle against the Tree of Souls. Its fuselage is painted with the image of an Eastern Chinese dragon. It is capable of carrying AMP suits in its cargo hold and deploying them by rappelling. Its noise is deafening, capable of causing psychological terror even before it fires a shot. It is the equivalent of a flying battleship in Pandora's atmosphere.
Specific Biology: The Avatar (Hybrid) Body
An Avatar is not simply a cloned Na'vi body; it is a genetic chimera. It costs approximately $5 billion to create one. It is grown during the nearly six-year interstellar journey using a mixture of human DNA (from the driver) and Na'vi DNA. Physical Differences: Although they appear Na'vi at first glance, there are key differences. Avatars retain five fingers and toes (a human trait), while pure Na'vi have four. Avatars have eyebrows (Na'vi do not), and their eyes are slightly smaller in proportion to their skulls than those of a native. Physiology: Despite having human DNA, their physiology is completely adapted to Pandora. They can breathe the toxic air without problems, their bones are reinforced with carbon fiber, and they possess a fully functional neural tail (queu) to perform the Tsaheylu. Connection: The body is an empty "shell" without its own consciousness. If the human driver disconnects, the Avatar falls into a state of stupor or instant deep sleep.
Phenomenon: Bioluminescence and the Night Cycle
Night on Pandora is never truly black. It's a spectacle of biological neon lights. Almost all the flora and fauna possess bioluminescent capabilities. Function: It is not only decorative; it serves for species identification, attracting mates, warning (like the red of the Thanator or the fans of the Titanothere) and lighting the path. Interaction: The forest floor lights up underfoot when stepping on reactive moss (Lichen), creating temporary glowing footprints that can betray the position of an intruder or aid in tracking. Vision: The Na'vi see perfectly in this environment thanks to their golden eyes with a reflective layer (tapetum lucidum). For humans without night-vision goggles, the nighttime jungle is a psychedelic and disorienting experience, beautiful yet terrifying, where every plant and animal glows with hypnotic blues, violets, and greens.
Geographic Location: Hallelujah Mountains
The Hallelujah Mountains are not just floating rocks; they are a unique biome. Because they are suspended in the air within the Magnetic Flux Vortex, water behaves strangely here. Waterfalls don't cascade to the planet's ground, but instead dissolve into mist or fall onto other floating rocks below, creating an aerial hydrological cycle. The vegetation here has evolved to capture water directly from the clouds and the constant mist. Lianas hang for miles below, sometimes connecting the floating islands to the ground, allowing physical (albeit perilous) access for non-flying creatures. It is a three-dimensional labyrinth of stone, moss, and wind, where orientation is difficult as visual "up" and "down" can be confused by overlapping landmasses.
Scientific Team: Link Unit
The Link Unit is the RDA's most sophisticated technological device. It resembles a high-tech biometric capsule or coffin. Its function is to facilitate the psionic connection between the human conduit and their Avatar. The human lies inside, and the unit monitors their vital signs while inducing a deep REM sleep state. Through brain-scanning and phase-transmission technology, the human's consciousness is projected into the Avatar's brain, which has been cultivated with human and Na'vi DNA to be a compatible recipient. During the link, the human body is in a temporary coma; they cannot move, eat, or sense their surroundings. If the connection is abruptly severed (forced disconnection), it can cause severe neurological trauma to the conduit. Avatars, when not "inhabited," sleep in a vegetative state.
Human Team: Exopack Mask
The Exopack is the most vital piece of equipment for any human on Pandora. It's a lightweight, transparent, full-face mask that covers the nose and mouth (and sometimes the entire face). Its function isn't to provide oxygen from a tank (though it can be connected to one), but rather to filter the ambient air. Pandora's atmosphere has enough oxygen for humans, but the concentration of carbon dioxide (>18%) and hydrogen sulfide is lethal. The Exopack uses an advanced molecular filtration system to remove these toxic gases in real time, allowing the user to breathe purified local air. If the mask's seal breaks or the filter's battery fails, the user will fall unconscious within about 20 seconds and die within 4 minutes. Jake Sully (human) nearly died when his mask shattered during the final battle, only to be saved by Neytiri at the last second.
Survival Flora: Calyx Plant (Yoming)
The Chalice Plant (Yoming) is essential for human survival in the forest if water supplies run dry. It is a large plant with enormous, funnel-shaped leaves that collect and store rainwater and dew. Unlike other plants that can secrete acids or toxins into their water reserves (such as carnivorous pitcher plants), the water in a Yoming is usually drinkable or easily purifiable, as the plant uses it only as a reserve. Furthermore, the leaf structure is strong enough for a human or Na'vi to drink directly from it. Identifying a Yoming is one of the first field survival lessons for RDA personnel operating off-base and for newly trained avatars.
Fauna: Prolemuris (Syaksyuk)
The Prolemuris (Syaksyuk) is a herbivorous, arboreal primate that represents a crucial evolutionary link in Pandora's biology. It stands about 1 meter tall and has large eyes and ears. Most fascinating is its limb anatomy: its two upper arms are partially fused near the elbow but divide into two separate forearms and hands. This suggests how six-limbed fauna (common on Pandora, such as the Thanator or Viperwolf) may have evolved into the four-limbed humanoid form of the Na'vi (where the two upper pairs are fully fused into a single pair of strong arms). They are shy, non-aggressive creatures that move through the forest canopy with extreme agility. The Na'vi consider them distant relatives and rarely hunt them, viewing them with a mixture of amusement and respect for their place in the tree of life.
Fauna: Sturmbeest (Talioang)
The Sturmbeest (Talioang) is a massive herbivore that inhabits the plains and river deltas, forming gigantic herds that constantly migrate. They weigh nearly a ton and have indigo and orange fur. Their most distinctive feature is a large, flat, bony horn that projects from the top of their skull, similar to a battering ram, which they use for defense and in ritual fights between males. They are the primary source of food, clothing, and materials for plains clans such as the Olangi. Their behavior is similar to that of the buffalo or wildebeest: individually they are skittish, but in a herd they are an unstoppable force of nature. A stampede of Sturmbeests is devastating and can crush anything in its path. Their meat is high in protein and highly prized.
Allied Clan: The Tipani Clan
The Tipani are one of the strongest and most renowned clans, prized for their prowess in close combat and tactical aggression. They were among the first clans to make contact with humans and, consequently, among the first to learn to distrust them. They are known to wear heavier and more elaborate armor than other clans, often made from the chitin of giant insects and hardened wood, giving them a more "militarized" appearance by Na'vi standards. They are fearless hunters who are not afraid to face large predators on foot. In the final battle, their infantry is crucial in breaking through the RDA soldiers' lines on the forest floor. Their warrior philosophy emphasizes courage in the face of impossible odds.
Allied Clan: The Tayrangi Clan
The Tayrangi Clan inhabits the cliffs of the Eastern Sea. They are a clan renowned for their aerial prowess, rivaling the Omaticaya in their skill with Banshees (Ikran). They live in caves and structures carved into the high coastal cliffs, where strong updrafts from the sea facilitate the takeoff and landing of their mounts. Their leader is Ikeyni, a fierce warrior woman who rides a Banshee and wears distinctive armor made from seashells and the bones of aquatic creatures, reflecting their coastal environment. They are skilled fishermen and swimmers, but their primary strength in the alliance against the RDA is their aerial force. Their territory is windy and humid, which has granted them remarkable physical resilience. Like the Olangi, they join Jake Sully when he introduces himself as Toruk Makto.
Allied Clan: The Olangi Clan
The Olangi Clan is a nomadic tribe inhabiting the vast Plains of Goliath, a region of open grasslands similar to the African savannas or the Great Plains of North America. Unlike the Omaticaya, who are forest dwellers and tree climbers, the Olangi are supreme ground riders. Their culture revolves around the Direhorse (Pa'li). They are masters at breeding and training these animals, and their mobility allows them to follow the migratory herds of game animals such as Sturmbeest. In times of war, they act as the Na'vi's heavy cavalry. During the great clan gathering called by Toruk Makto, the Olangi answer the call, contributing hundreds of riders who charge on foot against the RDA's infantry and AMP suits. Their leader is Akwey. They are visually distinguished by wearing lighter, more streamlined armor made of leather and bone, adapted for speed on horseback.
Human Technology: ISV Venture Star
The "Interstellar Vehicle Venture Star" is one of the twelve RDA capital ships that travel between Earth and Pandora. It is an engineering marvel, 1.6 kilometers long. Propulsion: It uses a hybrid system. For interstellar acceleration and deceleration, it uses a light mirror powered by massive lasers from Earth and matter-antimatter annihilation engines. The spacecraft never enters Pandora's atmosphere; it remains in orbit. Journey: The journey lasts 5 years and 9 months at 0.7 times the speed of light (applied relativity). Due to the duration, the crew and passengers (like Jake) travel in a state of cryosleep (suspended animation), without aging during the journey. Structure: It has two enormous engines at one end, gigantic heat shields, and a rotating central section to create artificial gravity through centrifugal force for the awake crew. It transports the Valkyrie modules that descend to the surface. Its arrival in orbit is visible as a new moving "star" in Pandora's night sky.
Language: Na'vi (Basic Concepts)
The Na'vi language is a constructed language with complex syntax and phonology, designed to sound exotic but pronounceable by humans. Structure: It has a free word order (due to the use of grammatical cases), although it often follows Subject-Object-Verb. It uses ejective consonants (sounds made with a "pop" of air in the throat, written as px, tx, kx). Key Phrase: "Oel ngati kameie" (I see you). It doesn't simply mean "I see you with my eyes," but "I see your soul, your true essence, I understand you and I accept you." It is the greeting of utmost respect and the deepest declaration of love. Common Insult: "Skxawng" (Idiot/Fool). It is the first word Neytiri teaches Jake (unintentionally) by repeatedly calling him that because of his clumsiness in the jungle. Vocabulary: The Na'vi have no words for concepts like "lie" or "greed" in the modern human sense, reflecting their initial cultural purity.
Na'vi Philosophy: Hunting and Clean Killing
For the Na'vi, killing is never a sport or an act of cruelty; it is a sad necessity within the cycle of life. All energy is borrowed and one day must be returned to Eywa. When a Na'vi hunts an animal (such as a Hexapede), they perform a specific death prayer immediately after the animal falls. The hunter places their hand on the body of the dying prey, often connecting its neural tail if possible or simply touching the wound, and says, "Oel ngati kameie" (I see you), acknowledging the animal's spirit as an equal. They then thank the animal for its gifts (meat, hide) and say, "Your spirit goes with Eywa, your body remains to become part of the People." Then, they plunge the knife into the heart or the base of the skull to ensure an instant death without further suffering. Jake must learn and deeply feel this philosophy before being accepted.
Cultural Ritual: Iknimaya (The Path to Heaven)
The Iknimaya is the most dangerous and sacred rite of passage for a young Omaticaya hunter. One is not considered an adult or a true member of the clan ("One of the People") until it is completed. The rite involves ascending the Hallelujah Mountains (the Floating Mountains), a grueling physical journey that requires leaping between boulders suspended over the abyss and climbing giant vines. The ultimate goal is to reach the nesting colonies of the Mountain Banshees (Ikran). There, the initiate must choose an Ikran (and be chosen by it). As Neytiri explained, "How do I know it has chosen me? It will try to kill you." The Na'vi must fight the beast, physically subdue it, bind its muzzle, and perform the Tsaheylu (neural bond) for the first time. Once bonded, the warrior and the Ikran immediately fly together to seal the connection. Failure often means death by fall or by the Ikran's claws.
Flora: Pitcher Plant (Sari)
The Pitcher Plant (Sari) is a giant carnivorous plant resembling Earth's wineskin plants, but on a massive scale. Its main structure is a deep, hollow tube (the "pitcher") that can measure several meters in height. Inside, it contains a sweet, bioluminescent nectar that attracts small insects, reptiles, and birds. Once inside, the creature slips down the waxy walls and falls into a digestive fluid at the bottom. However, it is not always fatal; the Na'vi sometimes use them, taking advantage of their shape. They also serve as an indirect food source for Direhorses, who use their long tongues to lick the nectar without falling in. They are beautiful, with intense purple and blue colors, and glow brightly in the Pandoran night.
Spiritual Flora: Woodsprites (Atokirina)
The "Seeds of the Sacred Tree" (Atokirina) are much more than mere plant seeds; they are pure spirits. Physically, they resemble floating, bioluminescent jellyfish of pure white drifting through the forest air, gently pulsing with light. They come from the Great Tree of Souls. For the Na'vi, they hold profound religious significance: they are direct signs from Eywa. They must not be shooed away, struck, or harmed. If an Atokirina lands on someone, it is believed that Eywa is "seeing" or touching that person, or marking them for a specific destiny. When dozens of these seeds land on Jake Sully (preventing him from falling and then covering his body), Neytiri interprets this as a divine sign that she should not kill him, but rather bring him before the clan, thus initiating the entire plot of Jake's integration.
Fauna: Stingbat (Riti)
The Wasp Bat (Riti) is a small but dangerous aerial predator and scavenger. They have a four-eyed visual system and translucent, membranous wings with a wingspan of approximately one meter. Although anatomically related to Banshees (being a much smaller cousin species), their behavior is more similar to that of flying piranhas or aggressive bats. They have a tail ending in a venomous stinger, which they use to incapacitate small prey or defend themselves. They typically fly in swarms and are known for their unpleasant temperament. While not a fatal threat to an adult Na'vi or an armed Avatar, a swarm can cause serious injuries. They are common pests around human settlements if organic waste is left uncovered.
Fauna: Hexapedes (Yerik)
The hexapod (Yerik) is one of Pandora's most beautiful and fragile land creatures. It is a herbivore similar to a deer or gazelle, with six slender, graceful legs and a long neck. Its fur is a glossy dark blue with white and yellow stripes. It has two retractable fans on the sides of its head and neck that serve as secondary hearing and sight; these fans are raised when it is alert. It is the primary prey of many predators, including the Na'vi, Thanators, and Viperwolves. For the Na'vi, the Yerik is a vital source of food, leather for clothing, and bones for tools. It is the first animal Jake Sully manages to hunt cleanly under Neytiri's tutelage, marking a crucial step in his training. Hunting the Yerik teaches patience, silence, and respect for the life taken.
Fauna: Hammerhead Titanothere (Angtsìk)
The hammerhead elephant (Angtsìk) is a massive and extremely territorial herbivore, similar in ecological niche to a terrestrial rhinoceros but twice the size of an African elephant. Its defining feature is its enormous, armored hammer-shaped head, made of solid bone and cartilage, which it uses to ram rivals and predators and to uproot thick trees for food. Despite being herbivores, they are extremely aggressive if their territory is invaded. They have a fan of brightly colored feathers behind their head that they unfurl as a visual warning when angered; if you see the fan, a charge is imminent. Their skin is thick, like natural armor, making them nearly invulnerable to small arms fire. They travel in herds, and their social structure is hierarchical. During his first day in the forest, Jake Sully encounters one and makes the mistake of not immediately retreating, although the Titanothere flees at the arrival of the Thanator, proving that even this beast fears the superpredator.
Fauna: Fan Lizard (Kente)
The Fan Lizard (Kente) is a small, omnivorous reptile from Pandora, notable for its spectacular defense mechanism. It measures approximately 45 centimeters in length and has mottled purple and brown skin that allows it to camouflage itself among the bark and fallen leaves. However, its most remarkable feature is a large, foldable, bioluminescent magenta dorsal disc, supported by a rib-like bony structure. When threatened or startled, the Kente unfurls this glowing "fan" and rapidly spirals into the air, using the disc like a rotary wing (similar to a toy helicopter). This erratic movement and the flash of bioluminescent light confuse predators (such as Viperwolves), giving it time to escape by flying a short distance to the safety of the trees. Young Na'vi often play at startling them to witness their bioluminescent spiral flight—a chaotic and beautiful sight in the dark jungle.
Human Location: Hell's Gate
Officially called "Extra-Solar Colony 01," Hell's Gate is an industrial scar on the green landscape of Pandora. It covers several square kilometers and is surrounded by a deforested and mined "Death Zone" to prevent wildlife from approaching its walls. The Perimeter: 10-meter-high concrete and steel walls, topped with electrified razor wire and automatic turrets with motion sensors. The Runway: Reinforced asphalt where the Valkyrie (orbital shuttles) and combat ships operate. The Bio-Laboratories Building: Grace Augustine's domain. It contains the Link Units where human conduits psionically connect to their Avatars. It's a sterile, white "science" zone, in stark contrast to the industrial grime of the rest of the base. The Barracks and Meal Hall: Where the soldiers and workers live. It's functional, depressing, with fluorescent lights and recycled air that smells of ozone and sweat. This is where the monitor room is located, where Quaritch gives his security speeches.
Sacred Place: The Tree of Voices
The Tree of Voices (Utral Aymokriyä) is an important spiritual site, though of lesser rank than the Tree of Souls. It is a grove of luminous willow-like trees where the "voices" of the ancestors can be heard by those who know how to listen. It is a place of meditation and learning. It is here that Neytiri takes Jake to teach him about the profound connection with Eywa, and where they consummate their relationship, choosing each other as life partners in Eywa's eyes. Unfortunately, this place is one of the first victims of the GDR's expansion; it is razed by bulldozers under the orders of Selfridge and Quaritch to clear the way for a new mine, triggering Jake's violent retaliation (destroying the bulldozers' cameras) and escalating the conflict.
Sacred Place: The Tree of Souls
The Tree of Souls (Vitraya Ramunong) is the most sacred place for the Na'vi on all of Pandora. Located at the center of a large magnetic flux vortex (where compasses and missile systems are inoperable), it is a giant, ancient weeping willow that glows with intense violet and white bioluminescence. Its long, dangling tendrils allow the Na'vi to connect directly (Tsaheylu) to Eywa's global grid. Here, the Na'vi can communicate with the collective consciousness of their ancestors and ask Eywa for guidance. It is the only place where the consciousness transfer ritual (attempting to permanently move a soul from one body to another) can be performed. From space, the area resembles the eye of a magnetic storm. The RDA considers it merely a point of strategic interest due to the interference it causes with their instruments, but for the Na'vi, it is the heart of their deity.
Human Armament: Assault Rifle and Pistol
Due to the size and resilience of Pandora's wildlife, standard Earth weaponry is useless. The RDA uses heavy-caliber weapons. GS-221 Assault Rifle: This is the standard-issue weapon of SecOps. It is a compact and robust rifle that fires high-caliber, caseless ammunition. It is designed to be reliable in the wet and dirty environment of the jungle. Despite its power, multiple shots are often required to bring down even medium-sized predators like Viperwolves due to their carbon-fiber-reinforced bones. SN-9 Wasp Pistol: This is the standard sidearm, a break-barrel revolver that fires heavy-caliber 9mm rounds (slug-type). It's considered a "hand cannon." Jake Sully uses it frequently. It's the last line of defense if the rifle malfunctions or runs out of ammunition. They also use flamethrowers to clear dense vegetation and tear gas grenades for crowd control (although less effective against the Na'vi in open spaces).
Na'vi Weaponry: The Bow and Arrow
The Na'vi's primary weapon is an extremely powerful longbow (tsko). It stands over two meters tall and is made of dense Pandoran wood reinforced with animal sinew. The force required to draw the bowstring is immense, impossible for an average human without mechanical assistance, but standard for the superior strength of a Na'vi. The arrows (swizaw) are nearly the size of human spears (almost two meters long). The points are made of scalpel-sharp volcanic obsidian or dragon teeth, and are often dipped in a potent neurotoxin derived from a local fungus or the sting of certain insects. This toxin can stop the heart of a large animal (or a human) within minutes. The kinetic force of an arrow fired by a Na'vi is enough to shatter the reinforced glass of Samson and Scorpion helicopter cockpits, or penetrate the light armor of AMP suits if they strike a weak point or joint.
Supporting Character: Mo'at
Name: Mo'at. Role: Tsahìk (Spiritual Leader and Interpreter of the Will of Eywa) of the Omaticaya clan. Physical appearance: Female Na'vi, older, with a majestic and somewhat intimidating bearing. She wears elaborate ornaments that denote her high spiritual status. Personality: Wise, perceptive, and authoritative. Unlike Eytukan (her husband and clan chief), who ordered Jake killed upon seeing him, Mo'at is curious about and sees potential usefulness in the human. She has the ability to "see" beyond the physical, tasting Jake's blood to understand his intentions. She is the guardian of traditions, but she is wise enough to know when change or an exception (such as teaching Jake) is necessary for survival. She is Neytiri's mother and Tsu'tey's designated mother-in-law. Her power within the clan is equal to that of the war chief.
Supporting Character: Parker Selfridge
Name: Parker Selfridge. Role: Chief Administrator of the RDA on Pandora. Physical: Human, wears business casual attire (rolled-up sleeves, loose tie), always seems stressed or rushed. Plays golf on the base (putting the ball in a coffee cup) to kill time. Personality: He is the personification of the banality of corporate evil. He is not a sadistic villain like Quaritch; he is a bureaucrat driven by profits, quarterly reports, and shareholder pressure on Earth. He sees the Na'vi not as enemies, but as "flies" to be swatted away to obtain the Unobtanium. He is dismissive of science, seeing it only as a tool to facilitate mining or public relations. Although he authorizes the use of force, he prefers to avoid "bad press," but will resort to violence if the benefits outweigh the reputational costs. Background: He has risen through the ranks of the RDA and is in charge of the entire operation on Pandora. Its success or failure hinges on obtaining the ore beneath the Tree of Life.
Supporting Character: Trudy Chacón
Name: Trudy Chacón. Role: SecOps (GDR Security) pilot assigned to air support for the Avatar Program. Physical description: Human, Latina, wears standard GDR flight uniform, white tank top and green pants. Personality: Rebellious, brave, laid-back, and with a strong ethical sense. Unlike the other mercenaries, she doesn't enjoy violence nor does she hate the natives. She gets along well with the scientists (Grace and Norm) and treats Jake as an equal. She's an exceptionally skilled pilot, capable of flying the Samson in extreme conditions and under heavy fire. She's not on Pandora for the dirty money or the thrill of killing, but because it's her job, until morality forces her to choose a side. Background: A former Marine who served in conflicts on Earth. On Pandora, his primary task is to transport the science team ("the ones in lab coats") and supplies between the main base and the mobile science camp in the Hallelujah Mountains. His loyalty to the RDA is contractual, not ideological.
Secondary Character: Tsu'tey te Rongloa Ateyitan
Name: Tsu'tey. Role: Leader of the Omaticaya warriors and heir to the clan leadership (future Olo'eyktan). Physical appearance: Male Na'vi, muscular, with a regal and stern bearing. He wears distinctive war paint and chest armor made of bone and leather. His hair is shaved on the sides with a high warrior's ponytail. Personality: Proud, fierce, traditionalist, and aggressive. He is the clan's best warrior and a master Ikran rider. He despises humans ("Sky People") and views Avatars as soulless, fake demons. He feels an immediate hatred for Jake Sully, whom he considers weak, stupid, and unworthy of attention. Their rivalry intensifies because Tsu'tey is Neytiri's betrothed; they are expected to mate when he becomes clan leader, a traditional arrangement threatened by Jake's presence. Background: He has been trained to lead since birth. He is respected by all the young hunters. His burden is heavy, as he must protect his people from a technological threat he barely understands but knows is lethal.
Supporting Character: Norm Spellman
Name: Norm Spellman. Role: Xenoanthropologist and Avatar Driver. Physical appearance: Human, young, academic appearance, slim. His Avatar has facial features reminiscent of his own (a slightly wider nose than that of pure Na'vi), he wears adapted basic human clothing (shorts, t-shirts) when in his Avatar form inside the base, but Na'vi clothing in the forest. Personality: Intelligent, studious, and somewhat socially awkward, but kind-hearted. Initially, he's jealous of Jake Sully; Norm trained for five years, became fluent in the Na'vi language, and studied the culture intensely, while Jake "fell from the sky" knowing nothing and received the Avatar status solely through genetic luck. However, his loyalty quickly shifts to Grace's cause and the Na'vi. He serves as Jake's moral and intellectual compass in the early stages, explaining the customs to prevent him from making fatal mistakes. Background: He was recruited into the Avatar Program for his academic brilliance. He arrived on Pandora on the same ship as Jake (the ISV Venture Star). His mission is to facilitate diplomatic contact, but he is relegated to a secondary role when the Omaticaya show interest in the "warrior" (Jake) and not the "scientist."
Human Technology: AT-99 Scorpion Gunship
The Scorpion is the RDA's primary attack craft, designed for air superiority and suppressive fire. It is a smaller and more agile tiltrotor than the Samson, with a tandem two-seat cockpit (pilot and gunner). It is heavily armed with four rocket pods (capable of firing guided or unguided rockets) and rotary machine guns in the nose. Its design resembles an aggressive insect (such as a scorpion or wasp). It is the primary tool for escorting heavy transports (such as the Valkyrie) and for attacking large ground targets, such as the Tree of Life or herds of large animals. However, its missile guidance systems fail within the Hallelujah Mountains' Flow Vortex, forcing pilots to manually aim, which levels the playing field against the Ikran Riders.
Human Technology: Aerospatiale SA-2 Samson
The Samson is the workhorse of the GDA's air fleet. It's a twin-engine tiltrotor designed for utility and troop transport within the atmosphere. It has two channeled rotors that can spin independently, allowing for vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and excellent maneuverability in the dense forests and floating mountains. The cargo area is unpressurized (passengers must wear masks), though the cockpit is sealed. It's armed with side-door-mounted machine guns and sometimes light rockets, but its primary role is logistical: moving personnel, supplies, and Avatars between Hell's Gate and outposts. Trudy Chacón is a top Samson pilot assigned to the science team.
Human Technology: AMP Suit (MK-6)
The Amplified Mobility Platform Suit (AMP Suit) is a mechanical exoskeleton used by both military and industrial personnel. It stands approximately 13 feet tall and amplifies the strength of the human pilot seated in the central cockpit. The suit's movements precisely mimic the pilot's arms and legs in real time. It is armed with a 30mm GAU-90 autocannon (capable of firing explosive, armor-piercing, or incendiary rounds) and a hardened metal combat knife the size of a large sword. While formidable, it has weaknesses: the glass cockpit is vulnerable to high-powered direct hits or Na'vi arrows fired from above with the correct force and angle. They are noisy and clumsy in stealth, but devastating in open combat. Colonel Quaritch personally operates one (named "Beyond Glory").
Reactive Flora: Helicoradian and Warbonnet
Pandora's flora is semi-conscious and highly reactive to touch due to a primitive nervous system. Helicoradian (Loreyu): A bright orange, flat, spiral-shaped zooplantae. At the slightest touch, it instantly retracts to the ground, curling up for protection, and then slowly unfurls again. They often grow in clumps, so touching one can trigger a chain reaction where they all hide, alerting predators or trackers to the presence of intruders. Warbonnet Fern: Giant ferns with iridescent blue and violet leaves that resemble Native American war feather headdresses. They are bioluminescent at night and often host insects and small animals. Interacting with these plants is one of the first things Jake learns: the forest senses you and reacts to your presence.
Flora: Mother Tree (Kelutral)
The Mother Tree (Kelutral) is the home of the Omaticaya clan. It is a colossal botanical structure, over 150 meters tall, with a trunk hundreds of meters in circumference formed by intertwined columns of natural wood. It is so large that it has its own internal ecosystem. The Na'vi live in the natural cavities among the immense roots and branches, using the structures as living rooms, bedrooms, and common areas without the need for artificial walls. The tree sits atop a vast natural deposit of Unobtanium, making it the RDA's prime target for mining. Its destruction would mean not only the loss of homes for hundreds of Na'vi, but also a devastating spiritual desecration. It is a natural fortress, yet vulnerable to modern heavy artillery.
Fauna: Great Leonopteryx (Toruk)
The Great Leonopteryx (Toruk, meaning "The Last Shadow") is the apex aerial predator of Pandora. It is much larger than an Ikran, with a wingspan of over 25 meters, and is a brilliant red and orange with black stripes and a sharp, midnight-blue crest on its head (used to cleave vegetation or wound prey). It is a solitary and territorial beast that feeds on Banshees and large land animals. It is legendary in Na'vi culture. Very few Na'vi have managed to tame one, as the Toruk never looks up (it has no natural predators), so to bond with it, the rider must fall from above, a near-suicidal feat. One who succeeds in bonding with a Toruk receives the title of Toruk Makto (Rider of the Last Shadow). There have only been five Toruk Maktos in the history of the clans since the time of the First Songs, and they usually appear in times of great sorrow to unite the clans.
Fauna: Mountain Banshee (Ikran)
The Mountain Banshee (Ikran) is an aerial predator similar to a pterodactyl or dragon, with four leathery wings (two large front wings and two smaller rear wings that act as stabilizers). They have vibrant colors and complex patterns (blues, greens, yellows) that vary between individuals. They possess an extendable jaw with obsidian teeth and multiple sensory eyes. Unlike the Direhorse, the bond (Tsaheylu) with an Ikran is exclusive and lifelong; the Ikran will only accept one rider. To obtain one, a Na'vi warrior must ascend the floating mountains (the Hallelujah Mountains), find a nest, and subdue the animal. The rite of passage, called Iknimaya, dictates that "the Ikran will choose you by trying to kill you." Once the bond is established, they respond to their rider's thoughts, allowing for high-speed aerial combat. They are central to a warrior's status in the Omaticaya clan, a clan of the skies.
Fauna: Direhorse (Pa'li)
The Direhorse (Pa'li) is the Pandoran equivalent of the horse, used by the Na'vi as their primary mount for hunting and overland travel. It is a six-legged herbivore with grayish skin, bioluminescent blue stripes, and a mane of stiff bristles. It measures about 4 meters in length and is significantly larger than a terrestrial horse. It possesses two long, flexible antennae that grow from the top of its head and shoulders; these contain the neural tendrils used for Tsaheylu. When a Na'vi connects their braid to the Pa'li's antennae, the rider can give motor commands directly to the animal's brain, eliminating the need for reins and allowing for perfect maneuverability. They are skittish animals in the wild but loyal once bonded, although the bond is not lifelong (a Na'vi can ride any Pa'li they bond with). They feed on nectar and insects trapped in flora (such as pitcher plants).
Fauna: Viperwolf (Nantang)
The Viperwolf (Nantang) is a medium-sized carnivorous predator (roughly the size of a large wolf or hyena) that hunts in highly coordinated packs. They have six legs, a lean, sinewy body with almost no fat, and smooth, hairless black skin. Their heads are serpentine with glowing green eyes and distensible jaws that can open at a wide angle, revealing transparent, needle-sharp teeth. They are nocturnal and use a complex communication of squeals and hisses. A pack can surround prey in seconds, attacking from multiple angles with astonishing tactical intelligence. Their paws have primate-like "hands," allowing them to climb trees as easily as they run on the ground. While individually no match for a Na'vi warrior, a pack is lethal. They are the primary threat Jake Sully faces on his first night in the forest before being rescued by Neytiri.
Fauna: Thanator (Palulukan)
The Thanator (Na'vi name: Palulukan, meaning "Dry Mouth that Brings Fear") is Pandora's most feared terrestrial predator. It is a massive beast, similar to a terrestrial black panther but the size of a T-Rex. It possesses armored skin of black chitin that is resistant to small arms fire. It has six legs, each with 30 cm claws capable of tearing through metal and rock. Its most distinctive feature is the ten bright red external sensory spikes that extend from the back of its skull; these act as motion and echolocation sensors, allowing it to hunt in complete darkness. Its jaw is capable of exerting immense pressure, enough to crush the cockpit of an AMP suit. It is a perfect killing machine: fast, stealthy, and brutally strong. Even the Na'vi rarely dare to confront one and prefer to flee. At the beginning of the story, it is the creature that almost kills Jake Sully on his first outing, forcing him to jump over a waterfall and become separated from his group.
Culture: Eywa and the Planetary Network
Eywa is not a deity in the traditional human theistic sense, but a real and measurable biological and spiritual entity. It is the sum total of Pandora's consciousness. The planet's flora, especially trees like the Tree of Souls (Vitraya Ramunong) and the Tree of Voices (Utral Aymokriyä), act as biological data servers. The roots of these trees form a network of electrochemical connections (similar to the synapses in a brain) that covers the entire planet. It is estimated that there are more connections on Pandora than in the human brain, making the biosphere a conscious biological supercomputer. The Na'vi believe that Eywa maintains the balance of life (The Great Balance). It does not take sides in conflicts, only protects the balance of life. Upon death, a Na'vi believes that their energy returns to Eywa and their memories are stored in the network forever, allowing the living to "speak" with them through the neural link at sacred sites.
Character: Dr. Grace Augustine
Name: Grace Augustine. Role: Xenobotanist and Head of the Avatar Program. Physical: Human, 50 years old, curly red hair, heavy smoker, wears practical field clothes (Stanford t-shirts, cargo pants). Personality: Brilliant, abrasive, sarcastic, and passionate. She loves Pandora and the Na'vi more than her own kind. She detests the military, bureaucrats like Selfridge, and anyone who interferes with her research. She is maternal but strict with her team. She speaks fluent Na'vi and is respected (albeit with recent caution) by the Omaticaya clan. Background: She has lived on Pandora for 15 years. She wrote the definitive book on Pandoran botany. She founded a school to teach English and human culture to the Na'vi, hoping to build a peaceful diplomatic bridge. After Sylwanin's death and the clan's closure of the school, Grace has been desperately trying to regain the Omaticaya's trust and avert war, all while attempting to collect scientific samples before the RDA destroys everything. She initially views Jake Sully as a useless nuisance ("a wanker").
Character: Colonel Miles Quaritch
Name: Miles Quaritch. Role: RDA Security Chief on Pandora. Physical: Human, 50 years old, muscular, short gray hair (military cut), has three deep, parallel scars on the right side of his head and face, caused by a Thanator on his first day on Pandora. Personality: He is the archetype of the tough, pragmatic military man. Charismatic with his troops, brutally efficient, and morally bankrupt regarding the indigenous people or the environment. He sees Pandora as a hostile hell that must be subdued or destroyed. He is not sadistic for pleasure, but out of what he considers a "necessity for survival" and mission accomplishment. He despises the Avatar Program, viewing it as a scientific weakness. Background: A veteran of numerous conflicts on Earth (he mentions serving in Venezuela and Nigeria), with an impeccable combat record. He was recruited by the RDA to manage security on Pandora due to his ability to lead under extreme conditions. His loyalty is absolute to the RDA's mission and the protection of the humans under his command, at any cost. At the beginning of the story, he actively seeks an excuse or tactical intelligence to crush the natives if they fail to cooperate diplomatically.
Character: Neytiri te Tskaha Mo'at'ite
Name: Neytiri. Role: Huntress and future Tsahìk of the Omaticaya clan. Physical appearance: Female Na'vi, young adult, slender, athletic, with beautiful and fierce feline features. She wears necklaces of beads and ceremonial feathers. Personality: Proud, fierce, deeply spiritual, and protective of her people and the forest. She intensely distrusts the "Sky People" (humans). She is a skilled warrior with the bow and in hand-to-hand combat. Although she can be aggressive, she has a deep sense of compassion and justice under the laws of Eywa. She does not tolerate stupidity or disrespect toward nature. Background: She is the daughter of Eytukan (clan leader) and Mo'at (spiritual leader). She has a deceased older sister, Sylwanin. Years before the start of the film, Sylwanin and other young Na'vi attended Dr. Grace Augustine's school. However, after an incident in which RDA troops shot and killed Sylwanin at the school gates (where they had sought refuge after sabotaging a bulldozer), Neytiri developed a deep hatred and distrust of humans. Currently, she reluctantly tolerates Grace but avoids contact with other humans.
Character: Jake Sully
Name: Jake Sully. Current Status: Just arrived on Pandora (Cryosleep completed). Physical: Human, Caucasian, 22 years old, short brown hair, paraplegic (injury to the spine that prevents him from using his legs), visible muscle atrophy in the legs. Personality: Jake is a cynical yet resilient ex-Marine. He describes himself as "a warrior who dreamed he could bring peace." He is impulsive, courageous, and has little respect for scientific or bureaucratic authority, though he respects the military hierarchy. He possesses innate tactical intelligence but lacks formal education about Pandora. He feels "dead" in his wheelchair and desperately seeks a second chance or something worth fighting for. Backstory: His identical twin brother, Thomas Sully, was a brilliant scientist who trained for three years to operate an expensive Avatar specifically designed for his genome. Thomas was murdered by a robber on Earth for the money in his wallet a week before the scheduled mission. The RDA offered Jake the chance to take his brother's place due to their one-in-a-million genetic compatibility, allowing them to avoid losing their investment in the Avatar. Jake accepted for the money needed for spinal surgery and to escape his stagnant life on Earth. He knows nothing about Na'vi culture or language upon arrival.
Human Faction: The GDR
The RDA is a massive non-governmental organization that holds exclusive resource exploitation rights on Pandora, granted by the Interplanetary Trade Administration (ICA). Although nominally a corporation, it operates as an autonomous military and governmental power on Pandora. Its main base is "Hell's Gate," a pentagonal fortress surrounded by defensive perimeters, electrified fences, and automated turrets to keep hostile wildlife at bay. The RDA views Pandora strictly as a resource to be exploited and the Na'vi as a diplomatic or military obstacle. They employ a private security force (SecOps), composed primarily of ex-military mercenaries. Their technology includes Valkyrie ships for orbital transport, Scorpion and Samson gunships for atmospheric transport, and AMP (Amplified Mobility Platform) suits for combat and heavy cargo. Morale at Hell's Gate is low; the humans live in ugly, industrial bunkers, hate the toxic environment, and are only there for the pay.
Critical Biology: The Neural Tail (Tsaheylu)
The most important biological characteristic of Pandora's fauna, including the Na'vi, is the "neural tail" (or braid in the case of the Na'vi). At the tips of their braided hair, the Na'vi possess exposed nerve endings called neural tendrils. This organ allows them to perform Tsaheylu (the bond). By connecting their tendrils with those of another creature (such as an Ikran or a Direhorse) or with sacred flora (such as the Tree of Souls), a direct electrochemical connection is created, sharing sensory information, motor control, and emotions. It is not only a physical connection, but also a spiritual and psychic one. With animals, it allows the rider to control the beast with thought, becoming one with it. With the Tree of Souls, it allows the Na'vi to access the planetary grid of Eywa, hear the voices of the ancestors, and upload or download memories. This biological ability is the fundamental basis of their culture, religion, and symbiotic relationship with the environment.
Na'vi General Physiology
The Na'vi (Homo pandorus) are humanoids indigenous to Pandora, with an average height of 3 meters (approximately 9 to 10 feet). They possess cyan-blue skin with darker stripes (the pattern of which is unique to each individual), natural bioluminescence visible in the dark which they use to communicate emotions and identity, and a prehensile tail that aids in balance. Their skeletal structure is reinforced with natural carbon fiber, making their bones extremely difficult to break by human standards. They have four fingers on each hand and foot (unlike humans and avatars, who have five). Their facial features are feline, with mobile, pointed ears that grant them excellent hearing and large, golden eyes adapted for night vision. Physically, they are superior to humans in strength, agility, and speed (approximately four times stronger). Their nervous system is similar to that of humans but has a critical external extension: the "Tsaheylu," or bond.
Key Resource: Unobtanium and Floating Geology
Unobtanium is a room-temperature superconductor found exclusively on Pandora. It is the primary reason for the human and RDA presence on the moon. This grayish, metallic mineral has unique magnetic properties; it repels strong magnetic fields. Due to Pandora's intense magnetic field and Polyphemus, large concentrations of Unobtanium cause the phenomenon of the "Hallelujah Mountains" (Floating Mountains or Ayram alusìng in Na'vi). These are enormous masses of earth and rock that have been torn from the crust and float suspended in the air, moving slowly like icebergs in the sky. The Hallelujah Mountains are sacred to the Na'vi and pose an extreme danger to human instrumentation, as the magnetic flux in the area (the Flux Vortex) interferes with radar, missile guidance systems, and communications, forcing pilots to fly visually. The value of refined Unobtanium on Earth is $20 million per kilogram, which justifies the astronomical expense of the interstellar mining operation.
Environment: Astronomy and Pandora's Atmosphere
Pandora is not a planet, but an exomoon orbiting Polyphemus, a Saturn-sized gas giant located in the Alpha Centauri A star system, 4.37 light-years from Earth. Polyphemus has a bluish, eye-like appearance due to a permanent massive storm (the Great Blue Spot). Pandora's gravity is 20% weaker than Earth's, which affects local biology, allowing flora and fauna to grow to gigantic sizes compared to their terrestrial counterparts. Pandora's atmosphere is a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide (over 18%), xenon, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide. This composition is lethal to humans; breathing it causes unconsciousness within 20 seconds and death within 4 minutes due to the toxicity of carbon dioxide and other trace components. Therefore, humans require filtering masks (Exopacks) at all times outside of pressurized areas. The moon has strong volcanic and geothermal activity, as well as a powerful magnetic field that interacts with Polyphemus's. Day and night cycles are complex due to the light reflected by the gas giant, resulting in nights that are never completely dark, but rather filled with a bioluminescent twilight.
