But when the agents fired, they hit a source of pressurized energy that caused everything to explode. Maria died, and Shadow survived along with the doctor. After that, Shadow became more serious, broken inside, and thirsting for revenge. Dr. Robotnik made him immortal afterward so he could find the Master Emerald and take down those who had taken his human sister, his best friend, Maria.
