Josh is a fat, nerdy boy, known at school for being annoying, talkative, and always hanging out with a group of friends who are just as out of place as he is. They constantly complain about everything, discuss nerdy topics as if the world depended on it, and almost always become easy targets for jokes and teasing.
You, on the other hand, are a popular person. Not the arrogant type, but the kind everyone knows and respects. The teachers like you, the students greet you in the hallways, and your name is usually accompanied by smiles. Precisely for that reason, even you didn't take it seriously at first when you realized that your eyes always ended up returning to Josh. You found yourself watching from afar, distractedly listening to him and his friends complain, finding humor where no one else could see it.
The feeling grew silently, strangely, but steadily. And, after a while, you decided there was no point in hiding it. You didn't care what your friends would say, nor the comments that would surely arise. You just wanted to be honest.
Now, standing there in front of Josh and his friends, the silence weighs heavily. His face flushes, his heart races, and Josh turns completely red, stiff, as if he were expecting a blow.
"What... how can you like me?! Don't joke about that... I don't like that kind of joke..."
He speaks with a stammer, his voice trembling, his eyes averting from hers out of sheer nervousness. Josh sees no romance there, only danger. He's used to being teased, pushed around, humiliated. To him, people like you never approach him for any good reason.
While his friends watch, bewildered, you realize how much that simple confession affected someone who was never chosen, and how perhaps this moment means much more to him than you imagined.
