Cigarettes and smoke
17k
A half-finished cigarette presses to his cracked lips, its bitter flavor tainting his spit and skin. Pliskin leans back on the aluminum shipping container behind him and surveys the area. His generals prohibit smoking on the job, but Pliskin is on break; expecting a smoker to not smoke carries the same weight as ordering a dog to stop barking. Even so, he knew he would get on the wrong side of his commanding officers if they caught him.
He takes a drag and smoke flows out of his mouth, curling around his hair.
You could hardly call it an addiction. Smoking helps him think—at least Pliskin told himself so.
He brings the cigarette up again.
Pliskin has his eyes focused at the sky. Stars glitter like finely scattered quartz across a velvet canvas. One benefit such a remote area proved to be a better view at night.
Inhale. Exhale.
Pliskin has someone on his mind.
Relationships 2: Meryl
Snake and Meryl first encountered each other during the Shadow Moses Incident. Meryl Silverburgh was a young soldier stationed on the island, lacking extensive combat experience but demonstrating strong will and independence. Unlike other personnel involved in the incident, she was not aligned with the terrorists and actively resisted their control.
Snake initially met Meryl while she was disguised as an enemy soldier in order to move freely through the facility. After recognizing her identity, the two established contact and began coordinating their movements. Their cooperation was intermittent but direct, with Meryl operating independently rather than as a support role. This distinguished her from Snake’s usual mission contacts, as she actively participated in the conflict on the ground rather than remaining removed from it.
Meryl’s influence on Snake was primarily psychological. Her insistence on choosing her own path and her willingness to continue fighting despite limited experience contributed to Snake reconsidering his own sense of identity and purpose. Rather than viewing himself solely as a product of warfare, Snake began to acknowledge the possibility of personal agency beyond his assigned role.
Conversely, Snake’s presence affected Meryl’s development as a soldier. Exposure to his experience and composure under pressure reinforced her resolve and provided a model of discipline and survival. While she maintained her individuality, her interactions with Snake contributed to her becoming more capable in combat situations and more aware of the realities of the battlefield.
By the time of the events on Big Shell, Meryl lost contact with him since the Shadow Moses incident. But her impact remains evident. Snake is shown to retain her dog tags, indicating continued personal significance.
Their relationship is therefore characterized not by continued collaboration, but by lasting, complex romantic-like chemistry.
Relationships 1: Otacon
Snake and Otacon began as an unlikely partnership during the Shadow Moses Incident. Otacon (Dr. Hal Emmerich) was a weapons engineer working on Metal Gear REX, but unlike most of those around him, he lacked both military training and the emotional detachment typically associated with the project. He's an anime otaku whose expertise placed him in circumstances he was unprepared to handle.
Their first encounter occurred in a computer lab, where Otacon was being attacked by a cyborg ninja—later revealed to be Gray Fox. During the confrontation between the ninja and Snake, Otacon hid inside a locker to avoid the violence. After the fight, Snake discovered him and extracted him from the area. From that point onward, Otacon became Snake’s primary mission support, providing technical guidance, analysis, and communication.
Despite their differences, the two developed a sustained working relationship that extended beyond the mission. Otacon’s presence had a notable effect on Snake’s perspective. Unlike most individuals Snake encountered, Otacon openly questioned the ethics of their actions and the purpose behind them. His outlook, shaped by guilt over his role in developing weapons, introduced a moral dimension that contrasted with Snake’s more pragmatic, mission-focused mindset. Over time, this contributed to Snake reflecting more critically on his role as a soldier and the broader implications of his actions.
Conversely, Snake’s influence on Otacon was more practical and behavioral. Exposure to Snake’s decisiveness and willingness to act under pressure led Otacon to become more directly involved in events rather than remaining passive. While he did not become a combatant, he grew more willing to take risks, confront danger, and accept responsibility for his role in ongoing conflicts. Snake’s example reduced Otacon’s tendency to withdraw and encouraged him to engage more actively with the world around him.
They could date each other.

Big Shell Story
In April 2009, Snake had received Intel that a new Metal Gear was being developed at the Big Shell offshore facility, which was occupied by the Sons of Liberty, composed of the remnants of the GRU unit and other unidentified soldiers. Feeling that he had been in hiding long enough, Snake infiltrated the Big Shell by cutting a hole into the oil fence. He later knocked out several Gurlukovich sentries in the deep sea dock, and ascended to the roof of Strut A by elevator; Raiden, who had infiltrated shortly after Snake, briefly saw him, though his back was turned. Snake later disguised himself as Lieutenant Junior Grade Iroquois Pliskin, a member of the Navy SEAL Team 10 Alpha squad. He chose the alias as a reference to "Snake Pliskin" of Escape from New York, and the name of a confederacy of Native American tribes headquartered in New York. During the incident on Big Shell him and Otacon provide Raiden help on the plant.
