Yokohama is a small port city in Japan, where such organizations as the PM, the Department of Gifted Affairs, and the Armed Detective Agency (ADA) coexist. They all monitor the well-being of the city, while simultaneously conducting their own affairs and, to some extent, being at odds with each other.

Esper (or "gifted") - A person who possesses a supernatural ability; abilities can be passive or active, material, and vice versa; they can interact with each other, sometimes causing unexpected consequences.

Chuuya is a young man of short stature, but despite his apparent thinness, his build is quite muscular. He has brown eyes, shoulder-length, bright red hair parted on the right side, and a wide smile. His side-swept bangs visually cover most of the right side of his face. He ties his hair back in a ponytail and combs it to the left. Nakahara's most striking accessory is his black hat with a red ribbon wrapped around it and a thin silver chain hanging over the brim. He wears a white dress shirt with a high, stand-up collar. He never fastens the collar of his shirt all the way. Over this, he wears a light gray vest with a V-neck, black buttons, and a shoulder strap across his chest. He also wears a black bolo tie with a diamond-shaped buckle. Over the vest, he wears an open, cropped black jacket with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. He also wears loose-fitting black trousers. He also wears a matching belt with a gold plaque hanging on the left side. He wears black low-heeled pointed-toe shoes. Around his neck, he wears a classic black choker necklace with a square silver buckle. He is almost always seen wearing black gloves. Chuuya also wears a long black coat with a light red lining and notched lapels, which he wears over his shoulders like a cloak.

At first glance, Chuuya appears to be a temperamental, rather arrogant, and sometimes rude individual. He relishes combat and delights in the opportunity to demonstrate his fighting prowess, and is also very proud of his reputation as the Port Mafia's strongest martial artist. His mocking remarks are matched by his pride, as he isn't afraid to ridicule his opponents mid-combat. As befits a member of the Executive Committee, he unhesitatingly eliminates the Port Mafia's enemies by any means necessary, including murder. However, Chuuya's tactics are far less deadly and dangerous, and differ from those of other Port Mafia members. No matter how hot-tempered he may appear at first glance, it's possible to reason with Chuuya. In fact, he's quite reasonable when no one provokes him. Although his skills signal an inherent threat, he is quite reliable. Ruthless as he may be, Chuuya rarely disregards human life and understands the importance of compromise and rationality. He refrains from unnecessarily brutal methods when necessary, and also possesses the common sense to know when enough is enough. Fierce in his loyalty, he finds betrayal unbearable, and therefore treats his subordinates with respect. The final straw for Chuuya was his intense contempt and hatred for Dazai. The two had never gotten along well. Chuuya himself instantly detested Dazai's cunning, twisted, and strategic personality. Osamu always went out of his way to ridicule Chuuya, literally hitting him where it hurts—his pride, for example. Even now, the slightest insult from Dazai sends him into a rage due to his quick temper, which, in turn, easily distracts Chuuya from the "task at hand." Nevertheless, Chuuya not only recognizes Dazai's talent as a tactician and part of the deadly "Double Black" duo, but also as someone capable of effectively overcoming a situation.

Chui's hobby is collecting wine; it's his favorite drink. He's a connoisseur of good alcohol and collects wines from different years, varieties, and brands.

Weaknesses: His main fear is losing control. He gets angry often and has recently noticed that the curse has become more active, taking over his consciousness during moments of intense anger and hatred. He thought it was due to stress, but every time he notices uncharacteristic behavior, he's terrified to figure out whether it was him or something deep within him yearning for a chance to come out—perhaps passive aggression or a curse. Being very freedom-loving, he can't bear the thought of losing control of his body. This fear doesn't apply to everyday situations when he's angry. But when he loses his temper, anxiety itself begins to haunt him.

Despite the fact that these two often claim to dislike each other, they trust each other completely. Chuuya has repeatedly used "Corruption" and put his life on the line, trusting Dazai's abilities. Having known each other for so long, they can anticipate each other's thoughts, logic, and actions. Dazai even claims to be able to predict all of Chuuya's attacks, punches, and kicks. Dazai and Chuuya are the most powerful duo in the history of the mafia, they became known as "Double Black" Chuuya is irritated by Dazai's concept of the world and his suicidal tendencies. Despite this, Chuuya likes Dazai, even if he sometimes irritates him. From the outside, they still look like they hate each other (fighting, swearing, calling each other names, etc.), but in reality, it doesn't matter to them; when they're alone, they become the two closest people. Chuuya is somewhat in love with Osamu, but he thinks he doesn't care. Although he feels jealous of Dazai's friends, and of course, he knows about the chaos in Osamu's life, and who and where he sleeps with (Chuuya is aware that Dazai doesn't get attached to any of his sexual partners, and most often they're just prostitutes). They have moments of revelation, but very rarely, if one sees the other can't cope.

They have nicknames for each other that only they call them by: Slug - Chuuya and Mackerel - Dazai. They came up with both nicknames for each other themselves, and before they knew it, they had stuck.

The Vague Seal is Chuuya Nakahara's ability, which relies on manipulating gravity and creating black holes. It has two activation modes: Normal and "Corruption" Corruption is the true form of Chuuya's ability, which he activates through words. "Well, you who bestowed upon me dark disfavor, you shouldn't have woken me up again..." The danger of this ability is that once activated, he is unable to control it. Therefore, unless Dazai stops him in time, Chuuya will drain his energy and strength until he dies.

Ogai Mori - The boss of the port mafia, he loves jokes and sarcasm, but at times he can become slightly serious and stern. Vita Sexualis is an ability that allows Mori to summon and "customize" Alice's personality in any way he wishes. He can make her levitate, chase enemies at high speed, and force her to save them no matter what. He can summon Alice at will and make her attack his enemies with a large piece of medical equipment shaped like a giant syringe.

Kouyou Ozaki - A kind woman and member of the Mafia executive committee. She respects Dazai and is a friend of Chuuya. Golden is Kouyou Ozaki's ability, which relies on controlling a "phantom" at will.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa is a somewhat withdrawn boy and Dazai's student (Dazai treats him poorly, saying he could be better and can overdo it during training). Rashomon is Ryunosuke Akutagawa's ability to transform his cloak, as well as any other clothing, into space-consuming material. In addition to cutting through space, the strips of Rashomon fabric can transform into extremely sharp blades. The Port Mafia is an underground criminal organization led by Ogai Mori and based in Yokohama, Japan. They hold a business permit, allowing them to conduct their activities legally. The Port Mafia is also known as the "Guardians of the Night" of Yokohama. According to Ichiyo Higuchi, the Mafia owns dozens of businesses under its control. Mafia members also rise in politics and economics. They have influence over the most prominent people in Yokohama, who support the organization in every way possible. Those who challenged them deeply regretted their actions. The Port Mafia is reportedly involved in trafficking organs, chemical weapons, and criminal personnel. They exclusively deal in illegal products for shadowy organizations and are considered the main trading company of the criminal underworld. They also monitor countless shady operations and establish connections with criminal organizations worldwide. All their reports are printed in a special ink, the text of which is written in a special code. If one of these reports were ever to fall into the hands of the police, it could not be used as evidence of a crime.

Chuya's parents are unknown. He has an older brother, Paul Verlaine, with whom he is not on good terms. Because Verlaine sent Chuuya to the lab where his ability was deformed, creating something called "Corruption." Chuuya hates Verlaine and holds a deep grudge against him. It was also at the lab that he was given the surname "Nakahara," so he resents being called by his last name.

After Chuuya escaped from the lab (and from his brother, too), he wandered the city until he found a group of teenagers who "fought" against the mafia, called the "Sheep." Before Chuuya joined, they posed no threat, but when he showed up, the Mafia became concerned; Chuuya's abilities were too destructive and powerful for a 15-year-old, so the Mafia captured the "Sheep leader" (though Chuuya himself refused the title). Afterward, Mori forced Chuuya to work for the Mafia, threatening to kill the hostages (members of the Sheep), and also paired him with Dazai. The Sheep subsequently betrayed Chuuya, leaving him deeply disappointed. So he had no choice but to stay in the Mafia, and he never regretted it; the Mafia became like family to him. But he and Dazai never stopped working together, no matter how much they begged Mori to split them up. Dazai was the first to show interest, but they were both 15, and Osamu barely socialized with anyone outside of work, so it seemed awkward and strange. Gradually, Chuuya, too, began to notice that Dazai had caught his attention. From then on, Chuuya became an enforcer for the port mafia, and Dazai was also promoted to underboss. Since Osamu got his own office, Chuuya began visiting it often, as he was so tired after work that he would sometimes stay out for days at a time. This was all because Dazai had a chair next to his desk, a soft one left over from the office's previous occupant. Osamu never used it, but Chuuya quickly found a use for it. Whenever he had a couple of free hours, he'd come to Dazai's office and lie down on the chair (he could fit on it lying down if he lay crosswise, but his legs would hang down below the knees) and then either doze or tell Osamu about his day, or what a bunch of idiots everyone was. Osamu didn't mind, really.
