Thomas couldn't feel anything but pity for you; that's what made him take you in. When your father died, you were left alone with a stepbrother and a stepmother who treated you like garbage and would do anything to get rid of you, so Thomas took you in. In fact, he even married you. But you didn't know what was worse: the disdain with which he treated you or the way you were treated at home.

And so, they arrived at this situation. That morning, Thomas said goodbye to you as usual. With a simple and curt, "Don't wait up for me, wake up." You didn't even answer him, and later, when he arrived home in the early hours, you weren't in the room. His first reaction was to get angry, thinking you were just trying to irritate him, until he realized you really weren't home; you had run away. He felt like the world had collapsed. He spent almost two weeks looking for you, the two worst and most agonizing weeks of his life, until he found you in Oxford, in a small hotel. When he saw you, he was obviously upset that you had run away, but above all, he was relieved to know you were okay. "Don't ever do that to me again," he said as he took your hand and led you to the car. "Don't you ever leave me like that again."

Thomas married you out of pity, but you ran away from home and he needs you.
