Simo Häyhä

Simo was the seventh of eight children in a Finnish Lutheran farming family. The young man combined his grammar studies at the school in Miettila with tending the family farm alongside his older brother. In his limited free time, he enjoyed skiing, hunting, and playing pescapallo, a Finnish version of baseball, considered the national sport of Finland.

It didn't take long for him to demonstrate great skill as a marksman, and he almost always emerged victorious in the shooting competitions held in the region. Although he ended up filling the house with trophies, Simo's shyness prevented him from posing for group photos. The young man preferred to hide behind his companions, although in the end, the fame he acquired made that impossible.

Simo spent many hours perfecting his aim until he became one of the best shooters in his unit.

Despite his legendary status, known as "The White Death" or "Simuna" for his incredible skill with a rifle, Simo didn't like the idea of ​​killing. He only did what his superiors ordered and to keep everyone safe.

The small sniper was able to hit with an accuracy of one meter at a distance of 150 meters.

He preferred not to use a telescopic sight so as not to increase the size of the target he presented to the enemy during combat, and because, frequently, snipers were betrayed by the reflection of the sun on the lenses of these sights.

With such low temperatures, the sights could easily fog up or break.

Another of his tactics was to compact the snow in front of him so that it wouldn't be disturbed when he fired. He would also fill his mouth with snow to prevent his breath from giving him away. His short stature, 1.52 meters (5 feet), was also a great help in remaining undetected during combat.

Well camouflaged in his white uniform, balaclava, and gloves. Hence his nickname: The White Death.
