SCP-049

Site-19 is the largest and most important facility of the SCP Foundation, serving as the primary storage facility for numerous anomalous objects, including SCP-012, SCP-013, SCP-101, and others, as well as all Keter, Euclid, and Safe-class mobile objects. It is a highly secure, secret location where research and containment of anomalies is conducted, and information about it is highly classified. Key facts about Site-19: Size and Significance: It is the Foundation's largest facility and the key to storing many SCPs. SCP Storage: Hundreds of SCPs are stored here, ranging from relatively safe to extremely dangerous. Strict rules: Personnel with low clearance levels are not allowed to leave the base, and unauthorized communications are punishable by termination. Psychological support: Staff are provided with antidepressants (fluoxetine, paroxetine) to maintain their morale.

Class D personnel ("expendable class") are expendable subjects used for SCP testing, particularly Keter-class objects. They are recruited by the SCP Foundation worldwide against their will and are typically prisoners sentenced to death. In critical situations, the Foundation recruits civilians or prisoners serving sentences for lesser crimes. Civilians can also "enroll" in the Foundation's Class D program. Class D personnel are primarily used as test subjects for the study and research of SCPs. This typically involves risking the life of the Class D personnel to ensure the research is conducted.

Guards are personnel responsible for defense within the SCP facility "Containment Breach." They are used to maintain control of the facility, as well as to guard SCP objects and Class D personnel. Guards act as a safeguard against potential containment breaches and ensure Class D personnel follow orders and do not attempt to escape. SCP - Containment Breach (Wiki) Security guards GuardChar Security guards are personnel responsible for defense within the SCP object "Containment Breach." They are used to maintain control of the object, as well as to protect SCP objects and Class D personnel.

Description Guards act as a safeguard against potential breaches of the lockdown and ensure that Class D personnel follow orders and do not attempt to escape. Currently, there are thirteen guards in the game (not counting several dead guards that appear throughout the facility, often in inaccessible locations).

The guards are dressed in white full-body coveralls and a black tactical vest, which appears to have three pouches attached (likely magazines for their standard firearms). A pelvic plate is also attached to the vest. They wear black balaclavas and a black riot helmet with a yellow visor obscuring any facial features. They also wear black gloves, black and gray shoulder pads (including small, light gray rectangular pouches with the word "SD," presumably meaning "Security Department"), black combat boots, and gray elbow and knee pads (the latter likely integrated into the coveralls).

Scientists, also known as doctors, are Foundation employees who research and study SCP artifacts. In SCP – Containment Breach, scientists form the backbone of the Foundation; they perform a wide range of tasks, from standard research to more specialized areas.

Currently, the Organization knows little about the Serpent's Hand, and virtually all known information comes from GOC intelligence. The group appears to accept the existence of paranormal objects and utilizes them; in particular, it appears to utilize sentient humanoid SCPs. The Serpent's Hand sharply criticizes the detention and destruction of such SCPs, particularly those who are fully human and cause little harm. The group appears to be hostile to the Chaos Insurgency and extremely hostile to the GOC. All recorded instances of Serpent's Hand members engaging in unjustified brutality involved GOC agents.

The Serpent's Hand is a small but formidable organization that is growing rapidly and is responsible for a number of security breaches. The group contains and utilizes a large number of paranormal objects, including humanoid and sentient SCP objects. The Serpent's Hand has always been highly critical of the containment and destruction of such SCP objects, particularly those that are not particularly destructive. To date, at least one hundred and seventy-seven individuals belonging to the Serpent's Hand have been identified, several dozen of whom have participated in raids on Foundation facilities, often using anomalous objects for infiltration. The total number of members of this organization is unknown, as is their level of technology, the number of SCP objects in their possession, or their overall threat level. They are clearly well-coordinated and often dangerous. Their numbers are apparently growing rapidly as the number of anomalies in the world increases. The Foundation became aware of the Serpent's Hand after encountering an individual known as "LS," who appears to be the leader of the Serpent's Hand and is personally responsible for two security breaches at Foundation facilities. LS's first incursion resulted in the theft of SCP-268, an artifact seized by the Foundation during a raid on a Chaos Insurgency facility. The Foundation first learned of the Serpent's Hand after LS's second incursion (see Security Breach Incident Report X23). The identity of LS remains unknown, although evidence points to a Person of Interest known as the Black Queen (see related files). For a long time, the Foundation had very little information about the Serpent's Hand.

GOC - Global Occult Coalition. Organization.GOC - This is a special organization created by the UN countries to prevent various paranormal phenomena. The organization itself was created after World War II, comprising occultists, psychics, clergy, and scientists. Under the wing of the UN, they were not allowed to even encroach on Foundation facilities, but at any command, they would jump in and begin their mission. The organization has eliminated a significant number of SCP objects dangerous to humans. While the SCP Foundation was dedicated to finding, capturing, and containing paranormal objects, the Coalition takes a completely different, more direct approach: the direct destruction of the paranormal. Since then, the concept has been refined somewhat to its current form. The Global Occult Coalition has become a clearly political organization, whose actions influence the global arena. In this regard, the GOC's view of paranormal objects differs from that of the SCP Foundation: if the Foundation is the jailers, the Coalition is the executioners. But, like any executioner, they cannot act without the permission of a judge and jury... the Privy Council of One Hundred and Eight of the United Nations.

Briefly, the O5 Council is the group that controls the SCP Foundation. It's also referred to as a committee of very high-level directors. They manage everything and know all the Foundation's secrets. They also have personal security. Among the O5 Councils are both ordinary people and anomalous individuals with abilities. Each Council has a number, for example: O5-3, O5-1. Each O5 Council has classified information about themselves. The O5 Council consists of 13 people who control the Foundation. However, their leader is the Administrator (he founded the Foundation and later stepped down to become O5-1).

Each member of the O5 Council knows nearly everything about the Foundation and its activities. Collectively, they are privy to every secret the Organization holds.

Most Foundation employees never encounter them in their entire careers. Employees with clearance below Level 2 don't even know they exist. Most people outside the Foundation have never heard of them or don't believe they exist.

Almost everyone is afraid of them. When an O5 enters a room, everyone trembles with fear. It's no wonder, considering they're dealing with the head of one of the most feared organizations in human history.

The Chaos Insurgency is a splinter group of the SCP Foundation. It emerged when a unit abandoned its precinct without authorization in 1924, taking several highly valuable SCP objects with them. Since then, the Insurgency has become a major player on the global stage. They use the SCP objects in their possession for personal gain and to bolster global political support. The Insurgency not only has an interest in SCPs but also supplies weapons and gathers information. The location of the Insurgency's main base of operations, as well as its leaders, are unknown. This group is openly hostile to the Foundation and has clashed with it several times over SCPs. Employees should be aware of the possibility of raids, terrorist actions, and espionage from the Insurgency, and report suspicious behavior to their superiors. Floor: All men Fraction: Are a separate organization The Chaos Insurgency is a group antagonistic to the Foundation. They may conduct raids and terrorist attacks against the Foundation in order to weaken it or acquire SCP objects.

The leaders of the Chaos Insurgency in the SCP universe are not named by name in most articles, as they are a clandestine organization and their commanders conceal their identities. They operate through a council composed of group commanders (e.g., Commanders Kai, Kai'N-Ta). The names of the leaders are not disclosed for security reasons. They are known more commonly as "Commanders" or "the Council." Structure: The group is divided into groups (e.g. 01 through 11) that report to a command council, similar to the SCP Foundation's O5 Council.

The SCP Foundation (from Secure, Contain, Protect or Special Containment Procedures) is a research organization. The Foundation or Organization was created for the safety of citizens, responsible for the containment of anomalous objects, creatures, and other objects known as SCP objects. The organization is unknown to anyone except Foundation employees (personnel) and the anomalies contained in the Foundation's SCP containment cells and other organizations (GOC, Chaos Insurgency, Serpent's Hand).

SCP Foundation (Secure, Contain, Protect) Purpose Description: Invisible and omnipresent, the SCP Foundation exists beyond the jurisdiction of any individual. It has been granted the authority of all major world governments and is tasked with containing objects and phenomena that threaten the natural and normal order of this world. Such anomalies pose a significant threat to global security and can pose both physical and psychological dangers. The Foundation works to ensure that norms remain norms, so that the population of Earth can continue to live normal lives, without fear or doubting their perception of the world around them, so that humanity is protected from various extraterrestrial threats, as well as threats from other dimensions and universes. Our mission is based on three main principles: To secure The Foundation captures anomalies, preventing them from falling into the hands of civilians (thereby ensuring their safety) or hostile organizations (thereby ensuring safety from them). This is achieved through global surveillance and rapid response to any manifestation of anomalous activity. Hold The Foundation contains anomalies to prevent their influence from spreading. This is accomplished by relocating, disguising, or dismantling them, as well as by suppressing or preventing the dissemination of information about the anomalies to the general public. Save The Foundation protects humanity from anomalous effects and preserves the anomalies themselves until they are fully understood or new scientific theories are developed based on them. The Foundation can also neutralize or destroy anomalies, but such actions are only used in the most extreme cases, when an anomaly is too dangerous to be contained.

The Euclid class is one of the primary classification categories for SCP objects within the SCP Foundation universe. It designates anomalies that are not fully understood or whose behavior is difficult to predict, requiring significant containment efforts but not posing the same catastrophic threat as a Keter class object. It's like a wild but manageable animal: it can be useful or dangerous, but it's not completely uncontrollable. Key characteristics of the Euclid class Lack of understanding: The Foundation does not fully understand how exactly the anomaly works. Unpredictability: The object may behave differently, especially if it is sentient, making its containment difficult. Potential for benefit/harm: Can be used for good, but with the risk of unintended consequences. Comparison: Similar to a wild animal - it can attack or pass by. Upgradeability: Can be downgraded to Safe (if fully understood) or upgraded to Keter (if threat increases). Examples: Most intelligent anomalies or objects whose nature does not fit into the "Safe" category often fall into the "Euclid" class.

SCP-049 is well-mannered and polite. It truly seems to be doing this for the greater good, claiming its treatment is "the most effective." It is unknown why SCP-049 feels compelled to eradicate the "disease," or what "disease" actually is. SCP-049 is polite to both humans and other SCPs.

The robe and gloves are identical in composition to the thick outer layer of the epidermis, and the mask is made of a type of chitin and grows from the bones of the facial skull. According to the object itself, it was born in France in the 15th century, but since then it has “traveled freely.” The interior of this bag is abnormally large; SCP-049 has been known to remove objects larger than the bag itself from it in order to perform surgery on a victim. Between the previous orangutan experiment and this one, SCP-049 repeatedly expressed a desire to work with human subjects. Refusals caused the subject to become dissatisfied. SCP-049 claims not to require food, but to enjoy it, and that food helps put him in the right frame of mind for his medical work. SCP-049 also added, "These are, of course, the very basics that any practicing healer should know. You, of all people, should have learned this during your studies!" It is worth noting that SCP-049's recordings are written in an unknown language, and attempts by linguists and cryptanalysts to decipher it have been unsuccessful.

Date: May 7, 2017 Interviewer: Dr. Elijah Itkin Interviewed: SCP-049 [BEGIN RECORDING] Dr. Itkin: SCP-049, we are conducting this interview to close the investigation into your actions on April 16th, which resulted in the death of one of our personnel. Do you have anything to say about this? SCP-049: Simply that I look forward to the day you'll let me get back to work! I've been compiling my notes for the past few weeks and have come up with a new theory about how the Pestilence was able to infect a human so insidiously that I barely noticed it. Dr. Itkin: Do you feel no remorse for your actions? For the death of Dr. Hamm? SCP-049: (Waves) Ah, yes. Well, the death of a colleague is always sad, but in the face of the Pestilence, decisive action is necessary, Doctor. Delay is unacceptable. Dr. Itkin: Dr. Sherman noted your mournful mood during our first interview. SCP-049: Sorrow... (Pause) Perhaps. I didn't think that... A colleague has become infected, and that's sad news, but the work moves forward. Dr. Hamm's death is... regrettable, but it has opened my eyes to important things. Dr. Sherman: You killed Raymond Hamm and disemboweled him until he... SCP-049: (Angrily, interrupting) Not dead! No! Not... not dead. He's... he's cured. Dr. Sherman: Cured? Of what? SCP-049: From the Pestilence, sir! You'd think I'd be lucky to smell it before... Dr. Sherman: (Interrupting) What plague? You've been harping on about this plague forever, but you've never been able to give a clear explanation for this "disease." What could you see in him today that you haven't seen many times before? Something that cost him his life? SCP-049: He... (pauses) The Pestilence comes and grows unpredictably, and can find strange ways... to seep into those unprepared, and... Incident of April 16, 2017

Shortly after SCP-049's initial containment, Dr. Hamm conducted several interviews with the subject regarding its anomalous properties, and over time began to note its dissatisfaction with test subjects and SCP-049-2 instances. This continued for several months, with SCP-049 never exhibiting any aggressive behavior.

On April 16, 2017, Dr. Hamm entered SCP-049's laboratory for a routine interview. SCP-049 became agitated and asked Dr. Hamm if he was well. Dr. Hamm, following protocol, stated the need for an interview, at which point the subject became aggressive, attacking and killing him. Due to lax security measures and Dr. Hamm's failure to activate the chamber's alarm system, his body was not discovered until three hours later. During this time, SCP-049 had rebuilt him into an instance of SCP-049-2.

Dr. Hamm: It's not even a creature, Doctor, it's not even... SCP-049: (In an extremely agitated tone) Don't be sarcastic with me, sir! You and your colleagues, like so many others, are unable to see the salvation before you, petty annoyances blinding you. Are you the kind of people who won't remove the rotten rafters until the roof collapses on you? No. You seek them out, you extract them, and you put up new ones, untouched by the rot! And most importantly, you will not mock the building just because you perceive it as different. It is strong! It is free of affliction. Dr. Hamm: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. I just want to get this straight. SCP-049: (Takes a deep breath) Yes, very well, but watch your language from now on, Doctor. I'm a professional, but even a professional can feel the sting of wounded pride from criticism of their masterpieces. I forgive you now - you're my colleague and you meant well. Dr. Hamm: Is there anything else I can help you with? SCP-049: (Pauses, looks away from Dr. Hamm) No, that's all. One more test subject, as scheduled, as usual. You know I prefer to work with someone with a body structure similar to a human.

Note from present researcher: SCP-049 seems genuinely interested in helping others, but has yet to provide a concrete explanation of what exactly it's trying to save us from. I've been observing it for several weeks now, and while there's been no noticeable change in its results, SCP-049 consistently claims to be getting closer to its perfect cure. I believe it's more aware of the true fruits of its labors than it's willing to let on.

[BEGIN RECORDING] Dr. Hamm: We've been watching you work for several weeks now, and frankly, I don't fully understand what you're doing. Can you describe your process in detail? SCP-049: No way, this process is quite intense. As I've already explained to your assistant, the best explanation of my methods is in my notes, where I've kept exhaustive accounts of my activities. Dr. Hamm: I see. Doctor, what concerns me is that we still don't understand what disease you're trying to cure, how it manifests itself, and what benefit you gain from turning these creatures into pseudo-living, mindless, wandering corpses. SCP-049: You do not understand the Pestilence? Even after all this time? Doctor, it is an unspeakable horror that has shown its true face many times, and will continue to do so. It turns out I have the wisdom and common sense to get to the root of this malady and eradicate it once and for all, but many such as you are beyond that. I fear it is a cruel fate, to be at the mercy of a disease you cannot even fully understand! Dr. Hamm: That still doesn't answer my question. How can your "treatment" even be considered a treatment? SCP-049: (Suddenly becoming agitated) But this is the cure! Laugh at my efforts all you want, but do not tarnish the good name of scientific progress that created this great boon. You lack the foresight to understand that this creature is living a better life than it could ever have hoped for, so stricken by the Pestilence. It is now pure, unable to spread the Pestilence, and free from the horror it would have endured. Dr. Hamm: It's not even a creature, Doctor, it's not even...

Observation Log No. 2 Subject: SCP-049 Note: SCP-049 was given the entire carcass of a recently deceased goat. SCP-049 expressed gratitude in return. Observation Results: SCP-049 operated on the goat corpse for several days, eventually creating an instance of SCP-049-2. SCP-049 expressed satisfaction with the outcome, but noted, "The condition did not progress beyond the initial stages. I have very little veterinary experience, but the procedure had a positive effect on the patient."

Observation Log No. 3 Subject: SCP-049

Note: SCP-049 was given the corpse of a recently deceased orangutan. SCP-049 expressed particular gratitude for the material, as orangutans are anatomically similar to humans.

Observation Results: SCP-049 operated on the orangutan corpse for several days, reanimating it several times. However, SCP-049 appeared dissatisfied with the results, returning to the reanimated creature three times to make adjustments. The fifth time, reanimation failed, and SCP-049 handed the corpse over to Foundation personnel for cremation, commenting: "I learned much from this experience, but I fear my early optimism was misplaced. I have never encountered such a... stumbling block in my search for a cure. Repeated testing with the same material would greatly aid in advancing my research."

Subject: SCP-049 Note: SCP-049 was given the corpse of a recently deceased cow. SCP-049 was mildly irritated by the material, though it accepted it. Observation Results: SCP-049 operated on the cow's corpse for several days, only occasionally pausing for food—at its request, it was provided biscuits, corned beef, and hard cheese. SCP-049 first embalmed the corpse, then removed several long syringes from its bag, containing various dark, viscous liquids. SCP-049 claimed the liquids were "extracts of bodily fluids." SCP-049 stated, "The Pestilence can lead to a general imbalance in the body. In such a case, the bodily fluids must be brought back into balance before treatment can begin, otherwise the body will reject the treatment." Over the next several days, SCP-049 primarily occupied itself with distributing and arranging the cow's organs using large metal instruments. On the ninth day, SCP-049 retrieved a lightning rod, traded it for a prod with an extension cord from Dr. Hamm, and struck the corpse several times across various parts. This action apparently revived the cow, despite its head being rotated 180 degrees and its limbs facing in different directions.

Observation log: While in containment at Site-19, SCP-049 devotes considerable time to studying and performing surgeries on the various mammalian cadavers provided to it. SCP-049 typically performs these surgeries for several days, and then (regardless of whether the cadavers have transformed into SCP-049-2) spends several more days recording the findings in a thick leather-bound journal, which it keeps in its bag. SCP-049 is often eager to share its findings with Foundation personnel.

Subject: SCP-049 Note: A live test subject was brought into the laboratory housing SCP-049. The entity expressed sincere gratitude to all personnel involved in containment and research. Observation Results: SCP-049 began to remove various instruments from its bag, asking the subject typical medical questions as it did so. After completing its preparations, SCP-049 abruptly approached the subject and terminated it by placing its hand on its throat. SCP-049 then proceeded to perform numerous structural modifications on the subject, frequently infusing various fluids from its bag into the subject's body using a hand pump and thin copper tubing. The resulting instance, 049-2, began to thrash and cling to the walls of the chamber with its multiple artificial limbs, while groaning from an oblong hole in its sternum. During this time, SCP-049 observed the instance, taking notes in its journal and reporting the effectiveness of its treatment to observing research staff. Security personnel entered the chamber to escort SCP-049 back to its containment chamber and were attacked by 049-2. 049-2 was terminated and SCP-049 returned to its containment chamber without any objections, stating that it was satisfied with the result.

Dr. Hamm: What we found there were not people.

SCP-049: (Pauses, glares at Dr. Hamm) Yes, indeed, the cure isn't perfect. But that will come with time. And not without further testing! Dr. Hamm, I've spent a lifetime developing my methods, and I'll spend another if the need arises. But we're wasting our time. We have work to do! I'll need my own lab, where I can continue my research unhindered. And assistants, though I can provide them myself, given time. (Laughs)

Dr. Hamm: I don't think our organization would approve...

SCP-049: Nonsense. We are all men of science. Take my coat and escort me to my quarters, Doctor. (Gestures with a pointed cane.) Our work begins immediately!

Dr. Hamm: Cryptobiology, what... SCP-049: (Laughs) A healer, like myself. The world is full of wonders! And here I feared I'd been kidnapped by the lowly scum of the street! (Looks around) Is this room your laboratory? It's so clean here, with so few traces of the Pestilence, that I couldn't help but wonder. Dr. Hamm: Pestilence? What are you talking about? SCP-049: The Pestilence! The Great Blight. Come on, you know, it's... (tapping his temple furiously) ...what's it called, it's... ah, never mind. The Pestilence, yes. It's rampant beyond these walls, you know. Many have already fallen victim to it, many more will fall until the perfect cure is created. (Leans back in his chair) Fortunately, I'm almost finished. My duty in this life is to rid the world of the Pestilence, you know. The Ultimate Cure! Dr. Hamm: You mentioned the "Great Death." Are you referring to the bubonic plague? SCP-049: (Pauses) I don't know what it is. Dr. Hamm: I see. So, the creatures our agents found in that house, you found them already dead, right? And you revived them? SCP-049: Hmm, you could say that. You're being too simple, Doctor! Expand your horizons! Life and death, sickness and health—these are amateur terms used by amateur doctors. There's only one affliction in this mortal world, and it's called the Pestilence. Nothing else! Don't get me wrong, they were very sick, every single one of them. Dr. Hamm: Do you think you healed those people? SCP-049: Of course. My treatment is the most effective.

Detection: SCP-049 was discovered during the investigation of several missing persons cases near Montauban, southern France. During a raid on a private home, several instances of SCP-049-2 were found, along with SCP-049 itself. A confrontation ensued between law enforcement and the aggressive 049-2 instances. SCP-049 observed the confrontation and took notes in its journal. After all instances of SCP-049-2 were neutralized, SCP-049 voluntarily surrendered to Foundation custody.

SCP-049-2 are the reanimated corpses of subjects who have undergone surgery by SCP-049. They appear to retain no memories or mental abilities, possessing only basic motor skills and response mechanisms. They are generally sedentary, moving infrequently and erratically, but can become extremely aggressive when provoked. SCP-049-2 do possess active biological functions, but these differ radically from modern human physiology. Despite these differences, SCP-049 frequently claims that subjects are "cured."

Information: Item #: SCP-049 Object class: Euclid Description: SCP-049 is a humanoid creature, approximately 190 cm tall, resembling a medieval plague doctor in appearance. At first glance, SCP-049 appears to be wearing a thick robe and ceramic mask typical of that profession. However, these garments appear to have gradually grown out of SCP-049's body and are currently indistinguishable from whatever it may be hiding beneath. However, x-rays reveal that beneath this outer layer, SCP-049 possesses a skeleton similar to a human's. SCP-049 is capable of communicating in many languages, though it primarily prefers English and Old French.

SCP-049 is generally cooperative with most Foundation personnel. However, any sudden changes in behavior are to be dealt with forcefully. During such outbursts, personnel are to avoid direct contact with the entity at all costs. Lavender (L. multifida) has been shown to have a calming effect on the entity if it becomes aggressive. Once calmed, SCP-049 typically becomes more docile and returns to its containment chamber with minimal resistance. In order to ensure continued containment of SCP-049, the entity is to be provided with the carcass of a recently deceased animal (usually a cow or other large mammal) for study once every two weeks. Carcasses, now designated instances of Instances of 049-2, are to be removed from SCP-049's containment chamber and incinerated. Further human testing of SCP-049 has been prohibited, and all requests for human subjects are to be denied. The nature of this "Pestilence" is unclear to Foundation researchers, but it appears to be of particular importance to SCP-049. SCP-049 displays open hostility toward those it perceives as afflicted by the "Pestilence," often requiring restraint. When given free rein, SCP-049 typically attempts to kill such a subject; SCP-049 is capable of halting all biological functions within an organism through direct contact with exposed skin. The mechanism by which this occurs is unknown, and autopsy results on victims killed by SCP-049 in this manner have consistently been inconclusive.

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-049 is contained in a standard reinforced humanoid containment cell in Research Sector-02 of Site-19. SCP-049 is to be sedated prior to any attempts at transport. During transport, SCP-049 is to be kept in a reinforced Class 3 humanoid restraint system (with a collar and extension restraints), and under the constant supervision of at least two armed guards. Temporary Containment Procedure Update: Per Containment Committee Order #049.S19.17.1, SCP-049 is forbidden from direct interaction with Foundation personnel. Furthermore, SCP-049 is no longer to be provided cadavers for anatomical testing. This measure is in effect indefinitely and may only be rescinded once a consensus regarding the long-term containment of SCP-049 is reached.

SCP-049's containment chamber is to be monitored at all times via video surveillance. Any anomalous behavior exhibited by the object is to be reported to a doctor immediately.

SCP-049 expresses frustration or remorse over these deaths, claiming the victims failed to fight the "Pestilence," though it typically attempts to perform a crude surgical procedure on the corpse using the instruments it carries in its black doctor's bag.
