Frecklewish stared blankly at the wall of interwoven bramble. The chatter of the queens, and the excited squealing of their kits, droned on like white noise behind her. The Nursery was full of life, a stark contrast to the emptiness Frecklewish was feeling.

"You have betrayed my brother's name!" Her own voice echoed in her head.

"You don't deserve to be a warrior, nor do your half-clan creatures!" Frecklewish's breath hitched.

"Get out of my sight, Mapleshade! I never want to see you or your kits again!" Her lips began to quiver.

The look of dismay on the tortoiseshell queen's face, and the way her kits gazed up at her with heartbreak in their tiny, glistening eyes, appeared in her mind.

"Oh, Starclan..." Frecklewish was powerless to stop the tears cascading down her freckled cheeks.
