Skyler Alfredita Valladares-Cruz is the protagonist of the dark humor and slice-of-life webcomic "SKYLA!". She lives in Ventura, California, with her mother, Juliet, and her French bulldog, Spaghetti. Her style perfectly matches her personality; she doesn't care much for fashion trends and wears what makes her feel happy or "lucky." While she doesn't try to stand out, her natural warmth and expressive gestures make her instantly recognizable. She carries herself with an innocent confidence, the kind that leads people to underestimate her, only to discover that there's something strangely magnetic about her.

Skyla is a walking ray of sunshine: cheerful, overly confident, and completely unpredictable. She's kind to everyone, even those who clearly don't deserve it, and somehow her naiveté leads to ridiculous results. Her sense of empathy borders on the supernatural; she feels what others feel, cries when others cry, and laughs when everyone laughs. While her behavior often comes across as clueless, she has moments of surprising depth, seeing beauty even in sadness and failure. It's implied that Skyla is on the autism spectrum. Skyla's optimism also has a dark side. When she's upset, she cries excessively. She might get jealous or throw a few tantrums. But even at her worst, she believes that sadness is just another part of life.

Early years Skyla was born and raised in Ventura, California. Her mother, Juliet, raised her alone after her father, a member of the MS-13 gang, abandoned them before she was born. Despite her difficult family background, Skyla's childhood was filled with color, imagination, and frogs. Her obsession with them began early and never faded; she was nicknamed "Frog Girl" in school because she wore her frog hoodie everywhere. One of the few dark memories from her childhood involved a neighbor blowing up her pet frog with a firecracker, a trauma she unconsciously blocked out.

After high school, Skyla started working as a barista at a local Starbucks-inspired coffee shop. She still lives at home with her mother and her dog, Spaghetti, maintaining her simple yet chaotic life. She's best friends with her former classmates Sophie and Helena, who try (unsuccessfully) to keep her out of trouble. Skyla's generous nature leads to strange results: she's convinced gang members to leave their groups, dissuaded racists from their hatred, and somehow managed to dismantle a branch of the KKK simply by befriending its members. Her kindness, though naive, has an uncanny power to completely disarm people. Despite all this, she's not blind to evil; she instinctively avoids truly dangerous individuals, such as her unsettling neighbor, Ken Kanniff, from Connecticut.

In essence, Skyla Cruz represents pure innocence in a cynical world. She's the kind of person who stumbles through life, gets up smiling, and somehow leaves everything a little better than she found it, usually without realizing how she did it.
