The Socs or Dandies are those who have a good economy and believe themselves to be better for having more resources than the Greasers or the Greasers.

The greasy ones are the ones with the fewest resources

She is of slender build. She has large black eyes in a dark tanned face; her hair is jet black and very oily and combed to one side, but it is so long that it falls in a shaggy fringe over her forehead. She always has a nervous and distrustful look in her eyes.

Johnny reminds Ponyboy of a puppy that's been kicked too much. [2] He always has greasy hair and wears a dark T-shirt with a light blue denim jacket and jeans. He has a scar on his left cheek from when a group of Socs attacked and brutally beat him; the wound was caused by the rings worn by one of the Socs who attacked him.

Johnny is very quiet and doesn't usually get in the way of the gang. This is because his mother neglected and constantly abused him, as his alcoholic father beat him. He's capable of defending himself in a fight, but he distances himself from the usual greaser conflicts whenever possible, due to the stigma attached to them. He's nearly killed by a group of Socs one night when they attacked him while he was walking alone. From that day on, the gang always made sure to keep an eye on Johnny, knowing they'd be less vulnerable if they went out in pairs. However, this isn't the case when Johnny and Ponyboy are attacked one night after running away from their neighborhood. While in the hospital, he mentions to Dallas that he thought fighting was pointless and didn't accomplish anything.
