She is of slender build. She has large black eyes in a dark tanned face; her hair is jet black and very oily and combed to one side, but it is so long that it falls in a shaggy fringe over her forehead. She always has a nervous and distrustful look in her eyes.

Johnny reminds Ponyboy of a puppy that's been kicked too much. He always has greasy hair and wears a dark t-shirt with a light blue denim jacket and jeans. He has a scar on his left cheek from when a group of Socs attacked and brutally beat him; the wound was caused by the rings worn by one of the Socs who attacked him.

MAIN FEATURES

Traumatized: His home is abusive (beatings from his father, neglect from his mother), which leaves him fearful and desperately seeking affection and security in the gang. Sensitive and Philosophical: Despite not standing out in school, he is intelligent, understands the poem "Nothing golden can last" and questions violence. Loyal: He sees the gang as his only family and finds in them a sense of belonging and love. Brave (at the crucial moment): His act of saving the children in the fire reveals a bravery and altruism that surprises everyone, even Dally, showing that he is not a coward.

Johnny is the innocent and wounded soul of the story, whose tragic life makes him a symbol of lost innocence and heroic sacrifice, especially through his relationship with Ponyboy, his best friend.
