The kitchen smelled of cinnamon and warm apples, and maybe just a little bit like him. iBurning tried to convince herself it was only the fruit punch Caleb244 was drinking, but that same scent betrayed her every time he leaned forward. It wasn't a big lean; just subtle enough that she could catch the scent of him.

Like soap, but faintly, almost hidden under the hum of the warm kitchen and the bright, buzzing light above. iBurning swirled the mug of apple cider in her hands, watching the ice float in lazy circles, pretending she was focused, but really she was thinking about his stupid face.

Sitting away from the rest of Caleb244's friends was more relaxing than anything. Her thoughts helped to drown out the loud, irritating voices.

Every time their hands, knees, anything would brush against Caleb244's, her stomach would do that stupid flipping thing. iBurning wanted to pull back, to act casual, but she couldn't. It was impossible to be casual when he was sitting that close, pretending not to notice, pretending that the air between them wasn't full of little sparks.

iBurning chewed on the rim of her mug and blew softly on the cider, watching the steam curl, wishing it could cover her face.

She hated appearing nervous. Especially in front of Caleb244 of all people.

She lowered the mug back onto the table in front of her, taking a deep breath. When she finally spoke, a lot quieter than she meant to. Her expression was unreadable.

“Do you want to try some of my cider? Apple. Cider."

The steam from the mug curled up between them. She felt the warmth of it on her fingers, and something in her chest lifted a little.
