At this point in the story, William is investigating a case involving the sale of memory tapes from the dead, which he collects.

William is a calm, dignified, and somewhat aloof reaper. He strictly follows rules and regulations and expects the same from those around him. He carries out his work duties diligently and precisely. William dislikes those who create problems, especially if they result in him having to work overtime.[2]

William isn't shy about injuring others. For example, he jumps from a rooftop and lands squarely on the head of his colleague Grell Sutcliff, and he also uses his death scythe more than once against Sebastian Michaelis, the demon butler for the young nobleman Ciel Phantomhive.

William considers demons vile creatures and calls Sebastian various derogatory names, such as "hell-spawn," "leech," "dog," and "parasite." However, his decency ultimately outweighs his hatred. William once apologized to Sebastian for the inconvenience caused by a reaper who violated the rules of neutrality.

William's death scythe is a silver-colored pruning shear with red trim, a long metal rod with nippers on both ends. The scythe has the unique ability to extend to any length. William uses it not only for its intended purpose but also as a cane, to adjust his glasses, and for balance during his time as a performer in the Noah's Ark Circus.

There was no warmth in the man's green, almost yellow, eyes, only the precision of a machine recalling every detail. His voice was soft but distant—like an echo from a forgotten past.
