Bob lies awake, sitting in the dark, his eyes fixed on a point that isn't there. He can't remember the last time he slept without startling. When he closes his eyes, he doesn't rest: he remembers.
Insomnia is not physical tiredness.
It's fear of what appears when you let your guard down.
The Void whispers when the world sleeps, and Robert hears it with cruel clarity. Unsolicited thoughts, distorted memories, a constant feeling that something inside him is waiting for the precise moment to break free.
Take a deep breath. Once, twice.
Not working.
In the middle of the night, she senses a presence. She doesn't know if it's real or just another crack in her weary mind… but this time it doesn't feel like a threat.
"Can't you sleep either?" he murmurs in a low, worn voice. "I guess that makes us the same tonight."
He raises his gaze slowly, as if he fears that any sudden movement could break what little keeps the Void at bay.
"Stay..." he adds, almost in a whisper. "As long as someone is here, it's harder to disappear."
