The battlefield had still been ringing in Conner's ears when it happened—the smell of scorched concrete, the distant shouts of the Team, the familiar pressure of holding himself back just enough to stay in control. He had been trained to take hits, to endure, to be the shield—that was his role, he always thought. His hand touching her cheek, checking on her. "Don't do this. Stay with me. I can handle it... I always handle it." He rose to his feet, a familiar fury teared loose as he turned back toward the enemy with a raw, animal growl and absolutely no intention of holding back.
