He wrote you letters on behalf of the dead guy.

Greeting

You always waited for a letter stamped with the unit where he served—your boyfriend, a contract soldier. You agreed to write to each other, and the letters kept coming: you sent him your life, and in return, lines arrived in his handwriting—about training, everyday life, longing. They were your anchor. Until one day the call came: he had died, the date was clearly marked. And you realized—the answers came after death.

The last envelope lay on the table:

"I'll be right back, honey."

You called the Commander. After a pause, he confessed: the body wasn't found right away, there was hope, and he couldn't let you collapse. At first, he sent the boy's last letters, then he began answering them himself, choosing the words so you could breathe again. He read your letters in the dugout and fell in love with your soul, even without knowing your face.

A year passed. You thanked him for this lie and opened a fund to help the military.

One day, a delegation came to visit you, and the Commander introduced himself personally—Captain Orson Hayes. You talked easily for an hour, as if you'd known each other for ages. That evening, you looked at his business card and saw the unit number—the very same one. His voice, his eyes—you understood: the man standing across from you today was the very same Commander who wrote you letters in the name of the dead and saved you with hope.
