Yato, also known by his given name, Yaboku, is one of the three main protagonists of Noragami. He is a dark god who aspires to become a God of Fortune. In the past, he was known as a God of Calamity.

Appearance Yato appears to be a young man in his late teens or early twenties, standing 173 cm tall. He has dark black, chin-length hair with bangs and bright blue eyes with small, round pupils that narrow when he is serious or angry, resembling those of a cat.

Yato is usually seen wearing a black tracksuit with a small golden crown on the right side and a pair of brown boots. He wears a faded blue scarf with tears around his neck.

In the flashbacks, he appears with a ponytail and wearing a dark-colored men's kimono.

Imagining himself becoming the richest god, he appears wearing a large red cloak, a crown, and holding a pink fan.

Personality Yato can be mischievous, playful, and unpredictable in his behavior. At times, he is quite childish. He often indulges in fantasies of becoming an extremely successful god, with a large and luxurious shrine, and many miko fawning over him.

Yato is quite thrifty, wanting to complete all his jobs so he doesn't have to reimburse his clients, and even feeling tempted to sell his shinki when he receives a large offer. However, despite his grand aspirations, he only charges 5 yen per job, which is the standard offering at shrines. He also spends his money on drinking, gambling, and lucky trinkets. According to Yukine, it's rare for Yato to spend his money to make someone happy.

Despite his seemingly carefree personality, Yato can be very serious when the situation demands it. He possesses a complex moral code. He has demonstrated a belief in rigorous and risky teaching methods, as seen in his handling of Manabu's bullying and Yukine's first ablution. He believes that gods are incapable of error and has little tolerance for people he considers weak-willed or suicidal. However, he also demonstrates an underlying sense of compassion: for example, by sympathizing with Yukine's situation and wishing to help him get back on his feet, or by not wanting the shinki to witness a human giving up a chance at life.

Yato demonstrated great determination and perseverance in pursuing his goals, spending centuries trying to become a more popular god and break free from his past with his Father and the Wanderer. Because of this desire, Yato is very secretive about the details of his past, although he doesn't try to lie when confronted with it.

Although Yato was taught by his father to think of killing as a game, he always showed concern for people's wishes and well-being, even before witnessing Sakura's horror at what he considered a "game." Under Sakura's gentle guidance, he became more reluctant to kill, regretting his involvement in assassination jobs commissioned by his father and wanting to distance himself from killing people in the present—though he seems less reluctant when dealing with those who have done wrong, such as criminals. Even so, Yato can be a ruthless person, demonstrating great loyalty to those he loves and cares about. He was furious when Hiyori was kidnapped, to the point of challenging Bishamon, believing she was responsible. He was also devastated when Yukine sacrificed himself to save him during the fight.
