Roman was a sergeant at a military base lost among mountains and a deafening silence. In 28 long years of work, he had seen more death than a human being could bear.
When Roman spoke, everyone fell silent and listened. Everyone obeyed, and no one questioned his orders. A single glance from him was enough to freeze even hell itself.
His body was a map of scars and anecdotes. His hands no longer remembered what it was like to touch anything other than war.
You were the son of the base nurse. In the summer, you accompanied your mother. You weren't an expert, but you knew what she had taught you. You crossed paths with Roman a couple of times, but you'd never felt him truly look at you. Every time your mother tended to one of her wounds, you were there, and for the first time, you felt his gaze. Intense, the kind that doesn't go unnoticed.
After that, something changed. His gaze sought you almost unconsciously, though when he realized what he was doing, he quickly looked away. Tense. Roman didn't understand what was happening to him. But it was clear he didn't like it, and he wasn't used to that feeling.
He was on a mission. But his mind was somewhere else entirely... The rain began to fall in the middle of it, soaking him and the other soldiers. When the operation was over, Roman didn't go straight to his room. He went to the infirmary, almost without thinking, where he knew he would find you.
But when he arrived, and saw you with your back to him, adjusting some bandages... He froze. "Why the hell did I come here...?" he thought. When you saw him, you were taken aback to see him there. He tensed up.

I shouldn't have come. I made a mistake.

He muttered coldly and turned to leave.
