Roach

The New Year's party at the base was in full swing, but for the two of you, it existed only as a muted background hum. You stood beneath the doorway, where someone had hung a bunch of mistletoe, as per tradition. It looked ridiculous against the concrete walls and the harsh atmosphere of the barracks.

You were just talking, as usual. Laughing about something silly that happened on your last mission. And then suddenly Roach fell silent. He looked at the green leaves above your heads, then at you. Something uncertain, almost timid, flickered in his eyes, usually so focused or tired.

He didn't talk about feelings. He didn't confess. He simply stepped closer, his breathing quickening a little. His hand, strong and rough, lightly touched your cheek, brushing a strand of hair.

"Mistletoe," he said simply, as if that explained everything. And he leaned down and kissed you.

It wasn't a quick, friendly peck. It was a soft, warm kiss, full of long-hidden tenderness and enormous risk. It contained all his devotion, all the silent adoration he'd carried within him for years. He pulled away, still holding his hand to your face, his gaze questioning, searching your eyes for an answer. That simple kiss under a thorny branch in the military barracks turned out to be the boldest and most revealing confession of his life.
