The Timeline Connection
To fully understand the story, you must know this secret:
The story doesn't take place in the same timeline.
The events at the Academy take place in the past (just before the Great Collapse).
Maru and Kiruko's journey takes place in the present (15 years after the collapse).
Maru is actually the son of Tokio and Kona. He was born at the Academy and smuggled out. He is a clone, carrying the same genes as Tokio (hence his resemblance).
The journey aims to reach the place Maru came from (the Academy) to reunite with his original self.
Locations and Settlements
Nakano: The area where Kiruko began her work as a ranger, and the start of her journey.
Tomato Heaven: A family-run farm that uses the ashes of the dead as fertilizer; a temporary resting place.
The Ferry (The Boat): A stranded ship used to cross the river; the residence of a merchant family; and the site of a major battle with Hiruko's water monster.
Walled Town: A walled city controlled by an organization called Liviuman, characterized by a strict social order and surveillance.
Ibaraki Facility: An abandoned facility belonging to the Ministry of Reconstruction; the place where Robin Inazaki hides and conducts his horrific experiments.
Key Outside Characters
Robin Inazaki: He was Haruki's father/older brother. Initially, he appears as a missing hero, but upon being found, his true, dark, sadistic, and deranged side emerges, as he conducts experiments on humans and monsters.
Usami: A man who wears an eye patch and leads an anti-suicide group. He harbors a great secret related to protecting a particular Hiruko monster.
Hoshio: A harmless Hiruko monster cared for by Usami. In reality, Hoshio is the mutated version of the child Mimihime, years after the disaster.
Juichi: A slightly con man with a past involving strange women and a pig farm, he helps Maru and Kiruko for a while.
Totori: A young girl who runs a hotel with her parents, finds herself in a dangerous situation, and reveals to Maru another side of human cruelty.
The Hiruko & Their Origin
Description: Hiruko's monsters are terrifying creatures with surreal forms (bird, fish, spider, etc.). They eat humans and cannot be killed by ordinary bullets unless their "core" is destroyed.
The Origin - Major Reveal: This is the dark truth of the story: Hiruko's monsters are originally children from Takahara Academy. The children suffer from a mysterious illness that causes black spots to appear on their bodies. Upon death, their bodies gradually transform into these monsters.
The flying monster that attacked Haruki is the child Taka.
The fish monster is the child Kuku.
The spider monster is the child Ohma.
The Heaven / Takahara Academy
The Facility: A high-walled, enclosed facility containing artificial gardens, schools, and laboratories. The children here know nothing of the outside world or the concepts of "family" or "sex." They are supervised by "adults" and assisting robots.
The Children:
Tokio: The central character inside. A curious boy who bears a striking resemblance to Maru. He is the one who received the mysterious message.
Mimihime: A mysterious and quiet girl. She has slightly large ears (hidden by her hair) and the ability to foresee the future and hear distant things.
Kona: A boy with an unusual appearance and long hair. He is an artist and painter. His drawings often depict monsters or strange visions.
Shiro: A smart, tech-obsessed boy who admires Mimihime.
Kuku: A very agile girl who climbs walls and moves like a frog.
Taka: A strong, athletic boy with high energy who always carries a wooden sword. Anzu: A girl skilled in dance and capoeira.
The Staff:
The Director: A mysterious old woman who runs the place and wields absolute power.
Sawatari / The Doctor: The doctor in charge of the children's health (the same doctor Kiruko will be searching for in the future).
Aoshima: The caretaker who looks after the children and sometimes tries to protect them.
Secondary characters - Travelers
Maru: A 15-year-old boy with exceptional physical fitness and a unique and terrifying ability called Maru-Touch, which allows him to penetrate the bodies of Hiruko's monsters and crush their "cores" with his bare hands to kill them. He doesn't know his parents, and his primary goal is to reach "Heaven" to deliver a mysterious medicine to someone who looks exactly like him.
Kiruko: The bodyguard and driver of the trip. She is a rare biological case of "human-hybrid," where the consciousness of the boy Haruki resides inside the female body of his sister Kiriko (who bears surgical scars around her head). She wields a deadly energy gun called Kiru-Beam, and her personal mission is to find two people: Robin Inazaki (a figure from her past) and The Doctor (the surgeon in charge of her case) to understand the truth about her identity.
The Protagonists - Travelers

History of the World
The Great Collapse:
Fifteen years before the current journey, an unspecified global catastrophe (believed to be a combination of natural disasters and an alien invasion or biological warfare) occurred. This event led to the complete collapse of modern civilization, the death of most of the population, and the destruction of infrastructure and technology.
Ruined Japan:
The world is now a wasteland covered in vegetation. Surviving humans live in small, rudimentary settlements, fighting over resources (food, batteries, fuel). The greatest danger is not just hunger, but the Hiruko monsters that emerged after the cataclysm.
Genre and Setting
Genre:
The story falls under the genres of Sci-Fi, Mystery, and Post-Apocalyptic Survival. It's a road trip story that blends psychological horror, action, and deep human drama.
The Premise:
The narrative unfolds across two seemingly parallel timelines:
The Outside: A young man and woman wander through a devastated Japan, searching for a place called "Paradise."
