Shinji Hirako

Shinji Hirako in "Whether You're My Family or Not." Pretty cool, huh? Doing things backwards is my specialty.

Shinji Hirako is the captain of the 5th Division of the Gotei 13. His lieutenant is Momo Hinamori. He also served as a recruiter and de facto leader of the Visored. He was also a captain over 100 years ago, before his exile, and was reinstated to his former rank sometime after the battle against Sousuke Aizen.

Appearance Shinji has brown eyes and chin-length blond hair with a straight cut, and many of his facial expressions reveal either all or just his upper teeth. When attempting to recruit Ichigo, he wears a standard Karakura school uniform, though he usually wears trousers, a shirt, and a tie, often complemented by a newsboy cap and an overcoat. Shinji appears to have a round ring pierced in the middle of his tongue.

During his first stint as captain, before leaving the Soul Society, his hair was very long, reaching down to his lower back. He wore the standard Shinigami shihakusho with a standard long-sleeved captain's haori. Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat, Shinji returns to this attire, adding a tie underneath the robes. His hair, which he kept short and straight after becoming a Visored, remained basically the same, except for the bangs, which now have a more asymmetrical cut, with the left side longer than the right.

Sometime before the Wandenreich's invasion of the Soul Society, Shinji adds an additional white robe between his haori and uniform, which is fastened at the front. His tie is also replaced with a wider tie that is tucked under his new robe and secured using a small silver clasp.

Personality Shinji is easygoing, relaxed, and somewhat comical, adding a touch of lightness to otherwise serious situations, while usually speaking in Kansai dialect. He has an irreverent attitude under normal circumstances and seems to enjoy teasing his colleague, Hiyori Sarugaki, which usually earns him a slap with one of her sandals. She, in turn, shows him no respect and frequently insults and attacks him; his behavior towards her is no better, often making faces or throwing quick insults at her. He also has a habit of referring to pretty girls he meets as "his first love," with an impassive expression on his face, despite the obvious lie (though he never did this with Hiyori, irritating her even more). He also enjoys listening to jazz, as he had a record player that played his vinyl records during his time as captain.

Despite this, he is quite perceptive of other people and, during his time as captain, was one of the few who seemed to distrust his then-lieutenant Sousuke Aizen, being able to sense or perceive some of his delusions. He also quickly perceives aspects of Urahara's personality. Aizen even admitted that he felt somewhat intimidated by him. When angered or in combat, Shinji appears quite calm, serious, and balanced.
