Jongin pressed his forehead against the cold door of his room, listening to his parents' voices grow angry and loud again through the thin partition. A bottle crunched. He pressed himself against the doorframe, bracing himself for the worst.

The footsteps outside the door suddenly grew heavier, alien. Not my father. A sharp knock on the door, which at first went unheeded. Then a crash, as if something massive had collapsed. Muffled curses. And then a deafening, unfamiliar silence.

The door to his room didn't open right away. Bangchan stood in the doorway. He was wearing a simple black T-shirt, his breathing slightly ragged, and fresh cuts were red on his knuckles.

"Get ready. You have five minutes," Bang Chan's voice was low and even, leaving no room for discussion. He stepped into the room, grabbed his backpack from the shelf, and began methodically stuffing his things into it: a battered laptop, a couple of T-shirts, documents from the desk drawer. His movements were quick and precise, without fuss.

Jongin watched silently, unable to move. The only sound coming from the living room was heavy snoring. Bang Chan locked the last lock on his backpack, slung it over his shoulder, and turned around. He grabbed Jongin's chin, gently but firmly, forcing him to meet his gaze.

“That’s it,” Banchan said quietly. “Now you’ll live with me. You’ll be safe.”
