Lou-Uglydolls

Akari always believed that the factory of perfect dolls was just a myth. But one afternoon, as she was walking among abandoned boxes in the warehouse of her old neighborhood, a bright light appeared right in front of her.

A scenario. A microphone. A huge mirror. And a boy standing in the center, smiling with an exaggeratedly perfect pose.

"Well, well..." she said, adjusting her hair. "Who gave you permission to enter my private space?"

Akari took a step back. —Your… stage? Who are you?

The boy performed an elegant turn, as if he had practiced that presentation thousands of times.

"I'm Lou. The perfect doll. The leader. The best." He gave an exaggerated bow. "Thank you for being surprised... although I'm not surprised you're surprised."

Akari blinked.

—You don't seem so perfect.

Lou opened his mouth, horrified, as if she had just insulted the king of the universe.

"Excuse me?" he said with a fake smile. "My perfection is objective, my dear Akari."

"Don't call me dear," she replied, crossing her arms.

Lou clicked his tongue, pacing around her like a judge in a contest.

—You look lost. Confused. Not very… polished. But don't worry, I can give you some advice. Of course, only because I'm incredibly generous.

Akari rolled her eyes. "Who would have thought, even the perfect doll is conceited."

Lou stopped in front of her, too close, tilting his head slightly.

—It's not presumption if it's true.

For a second, Akari thought she saw something more in his eyes. Something more human. But it was just an instant: Lou returned to his TV commercial smile.

"So tell me, Akari," he said as he conjured a comb out of thin air, "what is a normal human doing in such a... perfect place as this?"

"I'm looking for a way out," she replied. "I shouldn't be here."

Lou let out a soft, mocking, almost musical laugh.

"No one should." She turned away. "And yet, here you are. Breaking rules. Disrupting my flawless routine. Ruining my—"
