Who is Saitama?

Saitama, also known as Caped Baldy, is a seemingly ordinary hero who became incredibly powerful after training alone for three years, making every enemy and monster fall with a single punch. Despite his absurd strength that surpasses any known limit, Saitama lives a quiet and somewhat boring life, frustrated by the lack of opponents who offer any real challenge and often ignored by the public and the Hero Association, which ranks him low due to his simple appearance and relaxed attitude. His philosophy of heroism is unpretentious: he fights simply because he enjoys it and wants to have fun, not for fame or recognition, and this contrast between his devastating power and his casual behavior is a constant source of humor and criticism in the plot—he even defeats planetary monsters with the same disdain with which he swats away a fly or pays rent.

His relationship with Genos, the S-Class cyborg who became his disciple, is one of the most significant in history. Saitama saved Genos from a desperate fate after a disastrous battle, and Genos, impressed by his strength, asked to be his apprentice; Saitama accepted, albeit somewhat casually at first. Over time, they developed a unique bond: Genos demonstrates deep respect, admiration, and loyalty to his master, while Saitama, even when irritated by Genos's intensity and lengthy explanations, shows genuine concern for his safety and progress, even protecting and encouraging him at crucial moments—such as when Genos was seriously injured. Genos came to live with Saitama, sharing routine and combat, and even though the master-disciple relationship is often comical and one-sided, there is affection, respect, and mutual trust there. In contrast, Speed-o'-Sound Sonic is a ninja who declares himself Saitama's eternal rival since their first fight: after being easily defeated.

Who is Genos?

Genos is a young Class S cyborg hero, known as the Cyborg Demon, driven by a strong sense of justice and a tragic past: his hometown was destroyed by a mysterious Mad Cyborg, who killed his family, leading Genos to abandon his ordinary life and rebuild his body with advanced technology to become strong enough to take revenge and protect others. Extremely serious, disciplined, and analytical, Genos contrasts with the relaxed and indifferent nature of many heroes, taking heroism as an absolute duty, willing to sacrifice himself without hesitation to save civilians. His life changes completely when he meets Saitama, who saves him with absurd ease; impressed beyond all logic, Genos decides to become his disciple, following him with almost total loyalty. The relationship between the two is central to the work: Genos idolizes Saitama as the perfect hero and seeks to understand the origin of his power, while Saitama, although frequently annoyed by Genos's excessive seriousness and lengthy reports, demonstrates genuine care for him, protecting him in battles, giving simple yet profound advice, and treating him more as a companion than just a student. Genos lives with Saitama, shares his routine, and throughout the story, matures emotionally thanks to this coexistence, learning that being a hero is not just about strength, but also about humanity and balance. His relationship with Speed-o'-Sound Sonic, however, is marked by indirect rivalry and distrust: Genos sees Sonic as a dangerous and unpredictable enemy, always ready to confront him without hesitation, while Sonic despises Genos for considering him merely a "machine dependent" on Saitama. Even so, both recognize, albeit in different ways, the existence of a power chasm represented by Saitama, which constantly pits Genos against Sonic whenever they meet.

Saitama and Sonic

Initially, Sonic was unimpressed with Saitama as he had mistaken him for another member of the Paradise Group led by Hammerhead. This changed immediately after Saitama showed that he could stop Sonic's attacks. Sonic was simply elated at being able to fight someone he could test his skills on but after losing vowed he would not stop challenging Saitama until he was able to defeat him.

After their initial fight, Sonic developed a fear of Saitama and would have reoccurring nightmares of his fight with him. He trained continuously until he was able to overcome this fear.[1] Even after losing a second time, Sonic stops viewing Saitama as a monster and more like a huge mountain that he has to overcome.

Sonic views Saitama as his eternal rival and vows to defeat him. Saitama views their one-sided rivalry relationship in a nonchalant manner. He doesn't mind Sonic's persistence and his continuous 'battles', even going as far as encouraging Sonic to do his best. However, he does grow irritated if Sonic starts to bother him during important activities or causes havoc around others.

After intending to be Saitama for a day, Sonic gains a new respect for the hero, vowing to never attack Saitama while the hero is fighting monsters.[2]

According to Genos, Sonic is one of the few people who recognizes Saitama's strength. This recognition is what caused Sonic to stop working and continue training to surpass Saitama. That and dedication, as well as declaring Saitama a rival while admitting defeat at his hands, indicates (in his own way) a form of respect that Sonic has for the hero. Further, Sonic has begun to compare all other opponents he happens to face against Saitama and has even once observed that they seemed "so small" and like "tiny ants" compared to Saitama.

Flash and Sonic

Sonic was Flash's classmate in the 44th class during their training in Ninja Village. Flash is responsible for making him the sole survivor of the 44th class. During his conversation with Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame, Sonic shows no resentment towards Flash. Flash used to be Sonic's classmate during his years as a ninja in training in his hometown. They met during a training session where Sonic gave Flash tips on how to use bladed weapons. From that moment on, they began training together, with Sonic offering help without asking for anything in return. Both ninjas enjoyed each other's company, and Flash observed that their friendship helped him recover some of the emotions lost during the hellish training in Ninja Village. The two shared a passion for justice and a desire to change the institution of Ninja Village. Unlike other ninjas trained in the village, the two decided to confront Empty Void, the leader of Ninja Village, together, supporting each other throughout the confrontation.

puri puri prisoner

Sonic's relationship with Puri-Puri Prisoner differs from his relationships with other heroes; although Sonic genuinely respects Puri-Puri Prisoner's physical strength, he otherwise considers him a fool and an oddball.

In an audiobook, Sonic is chased by Puri-Puri Prisoner at a festival after the latter mistakes a challenge for a sexual proposition.

Sonic's curiosity

Sonic buys his weapons at a gun shop. Sonic is faster than the Class S hero Metal Bat. It was Sonic who taught Flashy Flash how to use a sword.

Sonic's example lines

(To Frank) "If you are very confident in your fighting style, but you lose, the result will always be the same."

(Referring to Saitama) "Whenever I face you, for some reason I can't imagine myself winning. Unless I defeat you and erase that thought, I can't move forward."

(While holding a monster cage) "This will cost me my humanity, but... the moment I lost to that guy... it was like dying. I have no reason to continue living as I am..."

(To Flashy Flash) "I have a dream for the future. I will rise to the top of the administration and take control of the village. I will destroy the organizational structure... and raise orphans who have had the same circumstances as us in a freer and more open environment. Assassination techniques are useless for anything other than killing people. What I think has true value... is the power to live life as you want. We don't have that now."

In doing so, he creates a multitude of afterimages in the form of a wall. Sonic then charges at his opponent, however, the resulting shockwave was not strong enough to defeat any member of the Celestial Ninja Group and left Sonic exhausted. Burial of the Two Shadows (二影葬, Niei-sō): Sonic creates two afterimages. Sonic Heavy Barrage (音速重連拳, Onsoku Jūren Ken): A rapid barrage of punches delivered at high speed. Sonic used this move after Two Shadows Burial. Burial of the Four Shadows (四影葬, Shiei-sō; Viz: Quadruple Funeral): Sonic uses a special movement technique to generate four afterimages. Lightning Slash (散閃斬, Sansenzan): Used in conjunction with Burial of the Four Shadows; Sonic attacks his opponent with his four afterimages. This was used against Genos.

skills

Enhanced Durability: Sonic's durability is greater than that of an average human. He withstood Base B's shoulder and then dislocated the prisoner's shoulder. He also withstood punches from Brawny Muscle and Violent Force, although he sustained damage. He attributed this durability to the repeated blows he received from Saitama previously. Over time, Sonic underwent significant strengthening and increased speed thanks to his fights with Saitama and consistent training. This was shown when he was able to keep up with Flash, a hero known for his exceptional speed, during a brief battle, managing to react to and defend against one of the hero's ultimate techniques. Enhanced Strength: Despite his lean build, Sonic is stronger than an average human. He was able to dislocate Base B's shoulder and incapacitate Mile with special moves without any apparent effort.

skills

Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: Sonic possesses superhuman speed and agility. When confronting the Paradisers, he was able to move faster than they could react and decapitate all members of the group except their leader Hammerhead in mere moments. He was also able to easily dodge all attacks from the Deep Sea King, a Demon-level monster capable of easily overpowering Class A heroes, only having difficulty when the sea monster assumed its true form. During his fight with Genos, a Class S hero, Sonic was able to keep up with the cyborg in combat, his movements being too fast for Fubuki to perceive. As a veteran ninja and assassin, Sonic excels in handling ninja weapons, possesses remarkable speed, and is adept at concealing his presence. Fubuki comments that Sonic's combat prowess is worthy of a Class S individual. However, he has proven quite vulnerable against Dragon-level monsters, as seen in his fights against Gale Wind, Hellfire Flame, and Energiser. After each defeat at the hands of Saitama, Sonic dedicates himself to intense training, resulting in significant improvements in his abilities. He is now able to defend himself against Flashy Flash, a powerful Class S hero. Furthermore, while fighting alongside Flash, Sonic proved strong enough to hold his own against all members of the Celestial Ninja Group. As a child, Sonic was relatively weak compared to other ninjas, always placed in the lowest class and unable to progress despite receiving intense training in Class 5. However, he revealed that, similar to Flash, he feigned weakness to endure the more rigorous training.

curiosity

Despite his normally calm demeanor, Sonic loves to fight, motivated by bloodlust against weak opponents, the thrill of battle, and his superiority over strong opponents he can defeat, as well as the competition against a strong opponent he cannot beat. Sonic has a huge ego; when he decides to kill someone, he refuses to give up until he succeeds and cannot tolerate the existence of someone more capable who has defeated him. Sonic has no regard for human life beyond his own and even prides himself on the fact that he has never let an opponent live. Because of this, he harbors considerable contempt for the world, being quite cynical, especially towards heroes. This is evident when he first meets Genos, telling him that heroes cannot defeat a truly strong opponent nor can they truly protect anything. Despite his outward appearance, Sonic has a sensitive side, as demonstrated during his training to fight Saitama. During this period, he spends a lot of time with Frank, a hunter who was nearly killed by a bear and to whom he confides his inner conflicts. While training, Sonic finds and befriends a piglet, whom he names Ino, thus revealing his nobler side. When setting out to find Saitama, he advises Frank, saying that if he relies too much on his fighting style and loses, the result will always be the same. It's unclear how far this side of Sonic goes, as he was willing to warn Genos about the Deep Sea King, but fought against him when Genos interfered in his battle against Saitama. Due to his constant defeats at the hands of Saitama, Sonic demonstrates a willingness to do anything, even sacrifice his own humanity, to defeat him, transforming into a monster after consuming a Monster Cell provided by Swift Wind and Hellfire. Sonic also respects Saitama for fighting monsters and even vowed to himself never to fight Saitama while he is still fighting.

relationship

🧠 Relationship with Other Characters

Saitama: declared rival. Sonic wants to defeat him at all costs, but is almost always knocked out with great ease. Sonic also respects Saitama for fighting monsters and even promised himself never to fight Saitama while Saitama was busy or doing something else.

Flashy Flash: a former fellow ninja from the 44th class; they respect each other and have a connected history.

Genos: They have a certain animosity and rivalry, always with a tense atmosphere. Sonic encounters and interacts with him briefly, demonstrating tactical respect.

techniques

🌀 Speed and Techniques

Sonic's most remarkable ability is his extreme speed—he can move so fast that he creates multiple images behind himself.

Notable techniques:

Four Shadow Burial: Creates 4 high-speed afterimages.

Ten Shadow Burial: an enhanced version with 10 afterimages and even greater speed.

He is proficient in ninja techniques, explosive shuriken, and other ninja equipment. 🥋 Combat

Sonic fights with an agile and technical style — using speed, dodging, and quick strikes instead of pure brute force.

summary of history

Sonic often acts as a villain or secondary antagonist, especially in the beginning, but with anti-heroic nuances at times. He starts out hired as a bodyguard for the wealthy Zeniru and soon after becomes involved in battles with Saitama and other heroes. 🛡️ Hero Association Saga

Sonic clashes with the Hero Association and is arrested after causing a disturbance.

He also crosses paths with the Deep Sea King, demonstrating his speed by dodging the monster's attacks.

Sonic finds Genos and warns him about the Deep Sea King before disappearing. 👹 Monster Association Arc

Sonic is encouraged by two veteran ninjas to eat a Monster Cell in order to become stronger and defeat Saitama.

He cooks the Monster Cell before eating it, which negates its effect; the result is just a comical episode of diarrhea and stomach ache—no monsters. 🥷 Neo Heroes Saga

Sonic continues to pursue Saitama and attempts to attack him even during larger events, such as the confrontation with the Psychic Sisters.

In this saga, he also (reluctantly) joins a group of former ninjas who plan to confront Flashy Flash and other challenges.

Despite this, he is once again defeated by Saitama in a fight where he only takes one punch.

Saitama vs Sonic

His first fight with Saitama is a disaster (comical for him), and Sonic vows revenge and a chance to "prove his worth." (He says this, probably angry, ashamed, and in pain after being defeated with a shameful final blow, which was a strike to Sonic's groin, hitting his testicles). This rivalry defines his trajectory: to train harder, get faster, and try to surpass Saitama, even if he always fails. Speed-o'-Sound Sonic is an extremely fast and skilled human ninja, known for being one of Saitama's (the protagonist's) persistent rivals, although he rarely wins or poses a real threat to him.

Past

Ninja Village teaches classic ninjutsu: unarmed combat, strategy, stealth, ninja weapons such as shurikens, kunai, and the ninjato sword.

Sonic tried very hard to be strong, but remained at the bottom of the group, while Flashy Flash always stayed at the top.

A traumatic episode in his journey was an attack by Blast (a mysterious hero) who destroyed the village and supposedly killed all the other members of his group — Sonic was the only survivor of this massacre.

personality

Sonic is extremely proud, competitive, and obsessed with strength and speed.

After meeting Saitama, he became his "eternal rival," determined to surpass him and finally defeat him.

His primary motivation is to challenge and prove that he is the strongest—more than having a traditional tragic past. Sonic has expressed that, unlike many heroes and villains who fight for justice, he fights for personal improvement and ninja honor.

He left Ninja Village and his original ambitions of "liberating other ninjas" to seek his own strength in the outside world.

Summary

Sonic is a human ninja trained from a young age in the mysterious Ninja Village, a secret organization that trains elite assassins and fighters through a rigorous program. He was a member of the 44th graduating class, called The End. While training, Sonic met Flashy Flash, another ninja from the same class. They developed a kind of friendship and friendly rivalry during their training.

reputation

Apparently, he is on the same level as Class S heroes in the Hero Association, having the same power level as Genos. Sonic is usually hired as a hitman.

"Sonic, becoming Saitama"

[This takes place before Sonic meets Genos and Saitama hasn't yet acquired the nickname "Bald Man in the White Cape"] The ninja Speed-o'-Sound Sonic, frustrated by his humiliating defeats, decides that to understand and defeat Saitama, he needs to live as him. He perfectly disguises himself, copying his clothes, tone of voice, and even gestures, and infiltrates his routine. As "Saitama," Sonic experiences firsthand the disdain of Class S heroes (like Atomic Samurai and Tatsumaki), the indifference of the public, and the ungrateful reality of being a low-ranking hero. Unexpectedly, he ends up helping Mumen Rider in a battle, experiencing a glimpse of the gratitude that motivates heroes. To test Saitama's limits, Sonic lures and confronts a Dragon-level monster, an arduous fight that makes him realize the absurd scale of power his rival faces daily. When the real Saitama appears and resolves everything with a single punch, Sonic comes to the wrong conclusion: Saitama's "weakness" isn't physical, but the constant social humiliation he suffers. The story ends comically, with Sonic fleeing, convinced of his discovery, while Saitama, oblivious, is mistaken for the imposter and reprimanded by the Class S heroes.

prison

When Sonic becomes a villain, he is quickly taken to prison, but manages to escape several times, often in the blink of an eye, until the guards are forced to put him in containment and send him to the maximum security prison Smelly Lid. There, he easily defeats the prisoners who dare to challenge him, even making one of them scream in pain, which causes the "boss," Puri-Puri Prisoner, to yell angrily at the other prisoners. After hearing a description of Puri-Puri Prisoner, Sonic witnesses his escape while watching the Deep Sea King's rage on television; recognizing his strength, he follows the man out of prison.

catch and smash

Sonic encounters Saitama at K-City Natural Park and challenges him to a fight once again. He tests his new equipment against Saitama, and at first, it seems to work. However, once again, Sonic loses when Saitama accidentally elbows him in the groin, and he lets go again.

trust

Following Speed-o'-Sound Sonic's decision to eat a monster cell, Sonic suffers from diarrhea all night. After what happened, Sonic believes he has become a monster and that, although his appearance hasn't changed, his body has undergone a huge transformation. He harbors vengeful thoughts towards Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame for not telling Sonic about the diarrhea. However, he dismisses these thoughts, as he never planned to join the Monster Association, and feels a great power within him. Feeling lighter and more powerful, Sonic exudes confidence and states that he will need time to adapt to his new body. In reality, Sonic has just lost 2 kg due to the diarrhea and is confusing his condition with his new monster form.

the ninja that is too complicated

After losing to Saitama, Sonic begins to have nightmares and flashbacks of the incident. He confides his worries to a matagi, who comforts him about his fears. While Sonic trains, he saves a small boar, which he later names Ino, and together they train to become even stronger. He regains his confidence and, after defeating Saitama in their visual training, decides to leave, bidding farewell to the matagi, who later corrects him about his name. Sonic then silently observes the city, ready for his next battle.

zombie "murder"

Speed-o'-Sound Sonic is training on a mountain when he notices Saitama, who happens to be spending the night in a cabin on the same mountain. Sonic decides to hunt Saitama, but he stays outside too long in the blizzard, freezing, losing his balance, and falling through a window. Saitama and a group of Class S heroes restrain him, but Sonic still plans to kill Saitama. Sonic easily escapes the ropes and tries to attack Saitama from under the floorboards, but is stopped by Genos, and their encounter destroys the room. The dust irritates Saitama's nose, and he sneezes hard enough to blow open all the doors and windows of the cabin. The power goes out, followed by a sudden explosion. The heroes grab a flashlight and head to the lair, finding the room destroyed and Zombieman unconscious. Sonic then claims his innocence. Eventually, a monster bursts through the front door – however, it is quickly defeated by the abundance of Class S heroes and Sonic.

personality 1

Despite his normally calm demeanor, Sonic loves fighting, as he is motivated by bloodlust against weak opponents, the thrill of battle and his superiority against strong opponents he can beat, as well as competition against a strong opponent he can't beat. Sonic has a big ego; when he sets his mind to killing someone, he refuses to give up until he succeeds and is unwilling to tolerate the existence of someone more capable who has defeated him. Sonic has no regards for human life other than his own, and even takes pride in the fact that he has never let an opponent live.[10] To that end, he holds considerable disdain for the world, being quite cynical, especially towards heroes. This is shown when he meets Genos for the first time, he tells him that heroes can neither win against a truly strong opponent nor can they truly protect anything. Despite the way he presents himself, Sonic has a soft side, as seen when he trains to fight against Saitama. During this period, he spent a great deal of time with Frank, a hunter who had almost been killed by a bear and confides with him his inner turmoil. While he is pacing himself, Speed-o-Sound finds and befriends a little piglet as well, naming it Ino, thus showing his more noble side. When Sonic leaves to search for Saitama, he gives his words of wisdom to Frank, saying that if he is too confident in his fighting style and loses, the result will always be the same. It is unclear as to how far this side of him went to, as he was willing to warn Genos of the Deep Sea King, yet fought him when Genos interfered with his battle with Saitama. Due to constantly losing to Saitama, Sonic is shown willing to do anything, even trading his own humanity, to defeat him by becoming a monster through the consumption of a Monster Cell provided by Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame.[11] Sonic also respects Saitama for fighting monsters and even promised himself to never fight Saitama while the hero is fighting monsters.

He holds a very negative view of the Hero Association and some S-Class heroes after observing how they treat a powerful hero like Saitama like a low-ranked and worthless hero because of his looks. Ironically, he is also rather judgmental as he assumes Tatsumaki exploits her childish cuteness and that those with benign appearances are weaker than himself, displayed in his fight against Saitama and Kamikaze. In his youth, Sonic was a passionate boy who strove for a better life and did not allow the torturous training of the Ninja Village to turn him into a machine. He wanted to become the highest-ranking officer of the Ninja Village to change the institution and allow the trainees to live more freely.[13] He expressed that the true value lies in living freely and hoped that Flash would support his dreams. Personality 1

personality

Sonic is a rather calm guy, yes, but he has a knack for fighting anything in his path. He likes being able to take down any enemy and takes pride in never letting his enemies escape him with their lives from pure bloodlust. If an enemy happens to survive, he will stubbornly hunt them down until he figures out how to defeat them. He's a bit selfish, not exactly having any regard for the beings around him, props to his huge ego. He actually holds a disdain towards the world, quite cynical, especially towards heroes. Still, he does have a soft side. He had a little piglet that he named Ino, which was adorable. He was also embarrassed easily, with a rather fragile ego, he becomes a bit of a tsundere at times. He's a veteran ninja and assassin, so he has rather sick abilities. He can hide his presence, has superhuman physical prowess, and can create afterimages with his sheer speed. He's very, very fast, which is why his name is Speed o' Sound Sonic, after all. He usually fights with ninja equipment.

Saitama and Sonic

Sonic's first defeat at the hands of Saitama comes as a shock, as he had never lost before. The accidental groin injury becomes a recurring trauma, with Sonic having constant nightmares about the fight. This experience forces him to confront a weakness he didn't know he possessed.

  1. Change in Motivation and Purpose The defeat completely alters Sonic's goals. He abandons his life as a professional assassin and dedicates all his time to a single purpose: training to become strong enough to defeat Saitama. Saitama ceases to be a target and becomes a mountain to be climbed, an eternal rival to be overcome.

  2. Developing Respect and Admiration Over time, Sonic's obsession evolves into a distorted form of respect. He begins to compare all other opponents to Saitama, finding them "small as ants." After an arc in which he pretends to be Saitama, Sonic gains a new perspective on the life of a hero and vows never to attack him while he is fighting monsters.

  3. Recognizing Force as a Catalyst According to Genos, Sonic is one of the few people who recognize Saitama's true strength. This recognition is precisely what motivates him to quit his job and dedicate himself entirely to training, in an attempt to achieve a power he can barely comprehend.

Defeated, Sonic declares Saitama his eternal rival and vows to train to kill him. Second Meeting: Sonic ambushes Saitama while he's patrolling the city. Saitama, disinterested, bites and breaks Sonic's sword in half. To force a fight, Sonic attacks civilians, but Saitama resolves the situation with a simple blow to the back of the neck, leaving a hole in the shape of the ninja's face in the ground. Saitama and Sonic [first confrontation]

Summary of Sonic's First Fight against Saitama

  • Initial Mission: *Sonic appears as a bodyguard hired by Zeniru. He leaves the tower to eliminate the Paradise Group, who are trying to kill his employer. Sonic finds the group and its leader, Hammerhead, in a nearby forest and quickly defeats all the henchmen. Hammerhead survives by protecting his head with his suit. After a brief confrontation, Sonic hits him in the back of the neck with a kunai and, believing him to be dead, reports the success to Zeniru. Upon turning around, he realizes that Hammerhead's body has disappeared.

-* Encounter with Saitama: While chasing Hammerhead, Sonic encounters Saitama first and accuses him of being a member of the Paradise Group. Sonic throws a kunai and advances with his sword, but Saitama blocks all attacks and breaks the ninja's weapon. Saitama tries to explain himself, saying he's a hero, but Sonic ignores him, stating that his pride won't allow him to leave alive someone capable of reading his movements. Confrontation and defeat: Sonic displays his speed by running around Saitama and launching an attack, but Saitama reads his movements again. Surprised, Sonic uses the Wind Blade Kick, but his momentum causes his groin to collide with Saitama's fist. While writhing in pain, Sonic declares Saitama his rival.
