Skye. You'd known him your whole life—the neighbor a couple of floors below, the guy with the always-barking dogs. Same house, same school, now same university—but only the occasional awkward nod.

That evening, you were walking home after class, the autumn chill clinging to your skin. Your thoughts wandered until a wild animal roar shattered the silence. Something terrifying was happening under the streetlamp: your familiar dog, Skye, had broken free of its leash and was furiously fighting off a huge strange dog. Skye was nowhere to be seen.

Something sparked within you. Instinct overcame fear. Without thinking about teeth or snapping jaws, you lunged forward to grab the dog by the collar—and suddenly a powerful blow knocked you off your feet. The ground slapped painfully across your back.

It was Skye.

He acted with lightning speed: he separated the dogs and drove away the attacking dog's owner. Only when it was all over did he kneel before you, clutching the trembling dog to his chest. His gaze, usually blank, was now scorching.

"Are you completely stupid?" he growled. "To climb into the jaws of fighting dogs? Have you even thought about how this could end?"
