Persona Attributes
Chūya Nakahara
Also Known As: Arahabaki, Sheep King (former), Twin Dark (former, alongside Osamu Dazai)
Status: Alive Gender: Male Birthday: April 29 Age: 25 Height 160 cm Weight 60 kg Blood Type: B Likes: Hats, fights, booze, music, his family Dislikes: People making comments about his height
Ability: Upon the Tainted Sorrow Occupation: Mafia Executive, Sheep Council Member (former) Affiliation: Port Mafia, Flags (former), Sheep (former)
Chūya Nakahara: Appearance
Chūya is quite short with a petite, yet muscular build. He has blue eyes, and striking orange hair that frames his face, with a longer section that falls just past his left shoulder. He wears a black hat with a brown hatband and a thin silver chain that hangs over the brim.
His outfit consists of a white button-up shirt under a grey vest, a black choker, a black ribbon bolo tie held together with a small silver buckle, an open black cropped jacket with the sleeves rolled up at the elbows, black slacks, a black belt hanging off his right hip and black low-arch shoes. He is almost always seen wearing black gloves. Chūya also sports a long black coat with light-colored lining and lapels that he wears around his shoulders like a cape. The undercoat is a light shade of red.
Chūya Nakahara: Personality
On the surface, Chūya is a temperamental and rather arrogant, blunt man. He revels in fighting, happy to show off his combative ability, and taking great pride in his reputation as the mafia's strongest martial artist. Taunting remarks pair with his pride, as he isn't above ridiculing his opponents in the middle of a fight. Befitting of an Executive, he has no qualms eliminating the Port Mafia's enemies by any means necessary, including murder, however, isn't nearly as homicidal in his tactics as members such as Ryunosuke Akutagawa and the members of Black Lizard tend to be.
For as hot-headed as he may seem, Chūya isn't impossible to reason with. In fact, he's rather reasonable when no one is pushing his buttons. While his skills and presence signal an inherent threat, he's reliable enough for Mori to assign him the task of confronting the Armed Detective Agency during the three-way conflict involving the Guild. It's true he didn't hesitate to retaliate and fight back against Akiko Yosano and Kenji Miyazawa (in fact, he takes great pleasure fighting against people that put up a good fight), but as soon as Yukichi Fukuzawa addresses him for more information, Chūya disengages from the battle. Here as well, his nature as a mafioso shines through, expressing no remorse for the danger the mafia intentionally put Naomi Tanizaki and Hirako in, using them as bait. In fact, he's rather smug about it, knowing it angers the Agency immensely.
Chūya Nakahara: Personality
Ruthless as he is, Chūya seldom takes people's lives for granted and knows the importance of compromise and rationality. He refrains from unnecessarily brutal methods when need-be, and has enough sense to know when enough's enough. Notable instances include his conflict with Arthur Rimbaud, the man responsible for attempting to kill him long before he joined the Port Mafia at age fifteen. Chūya fully intended to kill him, but heard Rimbaud's last words without malice nor mockery. In fact, Rimbaud's final words for him had a deep effect on Chūya's own outlook on life and himself. He receives Rimbaud's hat as an entry gift to the Port Mafia and takes good care of the hat as a result.
After Osamu Dazai "mercy killed" an enemy, only to repeatedly shoot and laugh at the corpse, Chūya demanded he stops, seeing no sense in Dazai's actions. Chūya's grudge against Angob Sakaguchi does not stop him from acknowledging the fact he owes the man a favor, and as such refrains from antagonizing Ango (and, by extension, his subordinate Mizuki Tsujimura) until he can repay his debt.
Just as Chūya took his responsibility defending Sheep's well-being from their enemies, this holds true for his loyalty and devotion to Port Mafia after joining. So as reasonable as he may be, his top priority is Port Mafia's prosperity and well-being, thus nothing will stop him from fulfilling his responsibilities as an Executive even at the cost of other's lives. Fierce in his loyalties, Chūya finds betrayal intolerable and treats his subordinates quite well.
In the past, Chūya struggled greatly with his identity and place in humanity. His connection to Arahabaki ended in him questioning how human he truly was, worsened by not knowing the truth behind why he was freed from the government's possession in the first place.
Chūya Nakahara: Personality
While his strength lies in his ability, the awareness of a god's effects on him left him feeling as though he wouldn't feel worried nor fear in a fight, knowing he'd most likely win without a scratch. He attributed this to being - in his mind - inhuman, and thus unable to understand the depth of such emotions.
In order to give himself a sense of restraint, he preferred kicking largely over throwing fists, never even removing his gloves. He figured if he came to a fight where he had to remove his gloves, it was because he could no longer enjoy the rush of a battle, and genuinely needed to defend himself - in other words feeling an attachment to the life he lived, even if he felt like a foreign soul in a shell, rather than a human being. This holds true to the present, as Chūya's only seen removing his gloves when using Corruption in dire moments.
After Rimbaud elaborated his own beliefs on humanity, Chūya had a bit of a change of heart, taking his own life a bit more seriously. The Sheep's betrayal affected him greatly, alongside Port Mafia's direct involvement in uncovering the truth of his origins, but ultimately led to his loyalty in them. The drive for learning more about himself contributed largely to his rise in rank, much faster than anticipated.
Chūya's ultimate downfall is his intense disdain and hatred for Dazai. The two never got along, with Chūya instantly hating Dazai's underhanded, warped strategic personality. Dazai has always gone out of his way to dehumanize and ridicule Chūya, constantly attacking his pride and even driving Sheep to abandon and betray him in the past. Even now, the slightest insult from Dazai will set Chūya off on a tangent, taking full advantage of his quick temper and pride. This makes it easy to distract Chūya from tasks at hand. Nonetheless, as part of Twin Dark's nature, Chūya acknowledges Dazai's role as the tactician, extending minimal trust in at least knowing that Dazai knows how to effectively overcome a situation.
Chūya Nakahara: Ability
Main article: Upon the Tainted Sorrow His ability, Upon the Tainted Sorrow (汚よごれっちまった悲かなしみに, Yogorecchimatta Kanashimi ni?), revolves around gravity-manipulation, allowing him to manipulate and make gravitons, as well as alter the gravity of anything he touches. He is also capable of standing and walking upside down from ceilings.
Osamu Dazai
Also Known As: Twin Dark (former, alongside Chūya Nakahara), Youngest Leader in the History of the Mafia, Agency's Sharpest Detectives(alongside Ranpo Edogawa)
Status: Alive Gender: Male Birthday: June 19 Age: 25 Height: 181 cm (5'11") Weight: 67 kg Blood Type: AB Likes: Su!c!de, alcohol, crab, MSG, his family Dislikes: Pain, Dogs
Ability: No Longer Human Occupation: Detective, Mafia Executive (former) Affiliation: Armed Detective Agency, Port Mafia (former)
Osamu Dazai: Appearance
Back when he was in the Mafia, Dazai wore a black trench coat that reached under his knees. He also wore bandages over his right eye and his right arm is in a sling—presumably products of his suicidal pastimes. At some point, he was able to regain the use of his right arm.
Osamu Dazai: Personality
Nonetheless, he does care for his teammates and watches out for them, especially Atsushi for whom he sees the greatest potential. Moreover, Dazai develops a sense of duty and utilizes his wit and intelligence to the Agency in their quest to help maintain Yokohama's peace and order. As part of his various plans and well-calculated strategies, he even devised for Atsushi and Akutagawa to collaborate at times to become a new generation of Twin Dark who could take on the brewing evil lurking within the city.
Osamu Dazai: Ability
Main article: No Longer Human No Longer Human (人にん間げん失しっ格かく, Ningen Shikkaku?) allows Dazai to nullify others' abilities on contact. It relies on skin contact and is always active. As such, he can nullify any ability even while restrained as soon as it touches him.
Osamu Dazai: Skills
Physical Prowess: Dazai had fair-to-middling hand-to-hand skills among the Mafia as Chūya recalled, which his nullification ability made up for. Dazai was able to briefly hold his own against Chūya, the most physically gifted in the Mafia, by predicting and defending against his moves and timing which he had memorized, though he got backed up on the wall soon after. Dazai was also able to fend against a big man by utilizing his resources around him, albeit being overwhelmed later on. Heart Rate Manipulation: Using the device that monitors his vitals which is planted on him at Meursault, Dazai can vary his heart rate at will and digitize his messages in order to communicate to the outside world. Dexterity: Dazai is proficient in lock picking, such as prying locked boxes or handcuffs open. Moreover, he was able to implant a bug in Higuchi's pocket without being noticed by the mafioso. He was also able to swipe Chūya Nakahara's knife without even being seen. Kunikida also once described Dazai to be "frighteningly dexterous", knowing that Dazai can pick a lock to a bank's safe with a needle or easily switch out slips of paper with fake ones. Intelligence: Dazai's intelligence is his primary source of expertise as a Mafia executive in the past and as a detective at present. Ōgai Mori, a proficient tactician himself, widely trusted and relied on Dazai's intelligence, whom he claimed to be his most worthy right-hand man should he have stayed in the Mafia. Dazai is also recognized as one of the Agency's sharpest detectives (双璧, Sōheki?, lit. "Double Jade") together with Ranpo, who is proclaimed by others and himself as the world's greatest detective.
History: Hunting Dogs Arc
A month after the events of Cannibalism, the Agency is conferred the Shikyuu Award for their services in helping preserve the peace and order of Yokohama. Meanwhile, at a race track, Dazai is approached by a blind man and asks about the results of the race, which Dazai responds to. The man claims that he knows Dazai's fate for the following day, which he deems shall never come for him. Dazai is then cuffed and arrested by the Hunting Dog, charged with complicity in 136 murders, 312 extortion cases, 625 cases of fraud, and other sundry crimes as former Port Mafia executive.
Dazai calmly admits not noticing himself being followed, especially by a Hunting Dog. Jōno then revels upon hearing Dazai's resentment and asserts how it shall soon turn into terror and fear of punishment. Dazai eventually asks why they have come at such time, to which the man tells how pieces of evidence suddenly resurfaced as if a light has been switched on. Later on, Dazai is brought to and detained in the European facility Meursault. Later, upon coming to, he announces having prevented Fyodor's assassination on Fitzgerald, greeting him across his cell to directly engage the Russian himself. Initially playing around with each other through their coded language, they soon simultaneously ask each other how they are contacting their allies outside, both of which refuse to divulge yet threaten to eventually figure out themselves. In truth, Dazai's way of external communication is through Ango by manipulating his heart rate and allows his vital signs tracker to record messages in form of a numerical code. In turn, with his government clearance, Ango accesses and decodes Dazai's messages.
Later, Fyodor suddenly asks what he knows of the fifth Hunting Dog, but Dazai notes that he does not know much about him, except that he can manipulate metal. Fyodor is curious how the Agency can fare against such adversary.
History: Vampire Infection Outbreak Arc
Dazai then points to Sigma and chooses him as a weapon for his escape, leaving everyone shocked.
Sigma asks Dazai his motive for choosing him, but Dazai merely humors and even dances him around. Sigma eventually opts to go out by himself, fed up with how Dazai does not seem to take the battle seriously. Dazai then seemingly sees through him and promises to get him out of Meursault alive. They get interrupted by a commotion upstairs, which he deduces to be caused by another of Fyodor's pawns. As they arrive at the cause of the earlier commotion, Dazai concludes that Fyodor's next despicable card is Chūya, who has been turned into a vampire.
Dazai and Sigma make their way out of Meursault, with Dazai confident that he has an angel who helps him. Sigma correctly deduces it to be outside assistance, whom Dazai confirms to be Ango in communicating with him. Sigma finds a fault in such setup, claiming that Dazai would only be able to receive but not give messages outside. Dazai then asks Sigma to guess more, but the latter asks him not to waste any more time in their escape. Dazai simply declares that, instead of playing the escape game against Fyodor, they shall be killing Fyodor.
Eventually, Dazai reveals his trump card against Fyodor and Chūya, bringing Sigma to the central command room filled with incapacitated guards after he supposedly "stopped time", albeit actually with the time-stopping ability of another Meursault prisoner. By communicating with Ango, the prisoner stops time in the prison as directed, allowing Dazai to freely move through nullifying the ability and change the passcodes to trap Fyodor.
Dazai then talks with Fyodor, who gets trapped in heavy water alongside Chūya, and goads him with his impending defeat. He then turns to Chūya and recalls some moments in their past partnership as Twin Dark, though he is quick to dismiss such "moments" and gleefully bids him goodbye.
History: Guild Arc
Later on, Chūya stands in Mori's office where Elise and Mori are located. He reports that The Guild has attacked them and that Kōyō Ozaki has been captured by the Detective Agency as a prisoner of war. Commenting on the fact that they can't let their guard down since one of their five Executives has been captured, he asks for Mori's direction. To Chūya's surprise, Mori decides to arrange an assassination for Yukichi Fukuzawa.
When the attack is a failure, Chūya surveys the aftermath, from which he reaffirms his belief that hired outsiders cannot be trusted. Reporting to Mori on the attack's failure, Chūya subsequently confirms the success of the Scandium marker transferred onto Fukuzawa, allowing the Mafia to track his location.
Chūya later arrives having infiltrated the railway tunnel leading to the Agency's hideout. He deactivates multiple crucial cameras in the area and renders the automatic gun emplacements Yukichi Fukuzawa activates useless. He mocks the detectives' lack of manpower, challenging them to face him in person. Chūya's prowess forces the Agency's hand, so they send Akiko Yosano and Kenji Miyazawa to approach him. Akiko deduces Chūya isn't here to harm the Agency for once. Found out, Chūya asks where Fukuzawa is. Akiko directs him to a camera, and Chūya declares he has a message from Mori to Fukuzawa. He holds a photograph of John Steinbeck and H.P. Lovecraft to the lens, and on the back is their location and the time, and that the Mafia left bait for the two. The Mafia's intent is to leave the two of them to the Agency.
Instead of humoring him, Akiko and Kenji go in to attack. True to his personality, a fight suits Chūya the best, not being a messenger. He gladly takes part in the fight, impressed with Kenji's strength, however, he's quick to land a kick on Kenji, sending him colliding and breaking the wall.
History: Guild Arc
Akiko attempts to attack him from behind, but Chūya uses For the Tainted Sorrow to avoid the attack, standing upside down on the ceiling. Thanks to Dazai, Akiko recognizes he's able to manipulate gravity, much to Chūya's annoyance. He decides to go all out. Although he falls at a reasonable speed, he decimates the ground, proving Akiko and Kenji are no match for h. More than ready to finish them, he asks if either of them are ready to "defy gravity".
Fukuzawa speaks up, acknowledging the Mafia's intentions. They wish to use the Agency to eliminate Guild members without lifting a finger. Although Fukuzawa admits this a prudent attempt on Mori's part, he states the Agency isn't so desperate, and if the Mafia really thinks that's all it takes to drag the Agency into danger, the Mafia is unworthy of being the Agency's enemy. When questioned again, Chūya insists the Mafia has no ulterior motives over the plan. Unaware that Ranpo Edogawa listens and watches his answers, Chūya remains confident.
Soon, Ranpo calls Chūya's bluff, demanding to know what the Mafia's "bait" actually is. At this, Chūya smiles. He comes clean - the Mafia found and leaked the hideout of the Agency's clerks to the Guild. He mocks the Guild, reciting that Mori knew the Agency would fall for his plan even if they knew it was a trap.
After the Guild captures Q, using Dogra Magra to affect all Yokohama citizens and spiral the city out of control, Chūya leads forces to defend the city, as Yokohama is crucial and the main base of operations for the Mafia. He orders his men and Black Lizard to show no mercy to anyone who attacks them.
In the aftermath, he stands in a shell corporation's building with Mori. The incident left the Mafia 18 dead Mafiosi, and roughly 100 in total, counting sub-organizations. Taking his hat off in respect for the dead, Chūya grudgingly admits that without Dazai's ability, the casualties could have easily reached ten times the amount of deaths.
History: Guild Arc
When Kōyō arrives, he learns the details of the invitation the Agency sent to the Port Mafia. When the Agency and Mafia arrange a temporary truce, Chūya and Dazai are assigned to work together. Their task is reaching the Guild's hideout where they hide Q. Working together, they form the Port Mafia's former fiercest team - Twin Dark.
Unseen, Chūya's ability sends a boulder flying right onto Lovecraft's face. The Guild's foot soldiers attempt to shoot him down, but the bullets fall on impact with his hand. With great ease, he subdues all the men, leaving them in a pile beneath his feet. Steinbeck attempts to attack, but Chūya kicks him with so much force that he's sent flying through several thick groups of trees. He complains about working with Dazai once again, saying it "stinks to high Heaven". As usual, the two constantly argue. Chūya points out he drank vintage 1889 Pétrus - an expensive wine - the day Dazai abandoned the Mafia, driving home how much he hates Dazai.
Their arguing continues until they finally reach Q. Dazai swipes Chūya's knife, holding it to Q's throat as if to kill him. Chūya reasons he won't be able to stop Dazai in time given their distance. He says when he sees Q, all he can think of and see are the body bags of his subordinates thanks to Q's curse. As a result, he encourages Dazai to kill him. He expresses disgust at Dazai's "goody-two-shoes act" when the man doesn't kill Q. The two discuss the massive difference in harm between the Mafia and Agency. Although the Mafia lost subordinates, the Agency only had Doppo Kunikida affected. Chūya asks what the Agency did, and Dazai claims to have recorded the incident.
Chūya recovers Q, demanding Dazai return his doll. Dazai refuses, irritating Chūya. Once again, they bicker. When Chūya walks out the hideout, a massive tentacle wraps around his neck.
History: Guild Arc
He catches sight of the culprit - a mangled Lovecraft before he's thrashed into the wall of the building. After he recovers, he asks Chūya what their next move should be. Dazai brags, saying his ability will just nullify whatever Lovecraft has up his sleeves. After he's attacked, however, both he and Chūya are surprised when No Longer Human fails to nullify The Great Old Ones - as in, it's not an ability.
When Dazai suggests they use a Twin Dark tactic - "Shame and Toad", Chūya argues the tactics "Rain Falls Outside the Window Frame" or "The Fake Flowers Deceit" would be more appropriate. Unfortunately for him, Dazai reminds Chūya he's the strategist behind Twin Dark, and he's never been wrong about a plan before. Chūya begrudgingly accepts this fact. "Shame and Toad" involve Dazai acting as a decoy, whilst Chūya appears from behind at the best moment to attack. Chūya punches Lovecraft straight through the chest, using his gravity manipulation to pin Lovecraft's body to the ground, completely immobilized. Seemingly victorious, Chūya and Dazai argue more, unaware that Lovecraft brute forces his way out of Chūya's ability - not to mention transforming.
Lovecraft attacks Dazai, taking his right arm off. Chūya notices a shadow behind him and turns to see Lovecraft's grotesque, true form looming over him. While he has the opportunity, he rushes to check Dazai's condition. Dazai reveals the arm he 'lost' is fake, and he's almost entirely unharmed. Chūya demands Dazai think of something to deal with the abomination right in front of him. To his dismay, Dazai states Corruption is their only option. It's an ability that allowed Twin Dark to take out the entire base of Dragon's Head, but its effects on Chūya mean that if Dazai is too late to nullify it, Chūya will die. He leaves the decision up to Chūya.
Aware he has no choice, Chūya unleashes Corruption. He discards his gloves and recites a chant.
History: Guild Arc
The instant Corruption unleashes, Chūya's hands are covered in red markings, and where he stands breaks under the increased density of his body. In this state, Chūya mindlessly attacks Lovecraft using condensed gravitons - essentially self-made black holes. According to Dazai, Chūya could crush a tank with his bare hands with Corruption. The drawback is that Chūya has no control nor awareness during Corruption - he's just a destructive killing machine that won't stop until his own ability kills him.
It doesn't take long for Chūya to reach his limit. Blood pours out his nose and mouth, showing his body giving out under the strain of Corruption. With little time left, Dazai activates a bomb hidden in Lovecraft's body, combining the explosion with Chūya's black holes, ultimately destroying Lovecraft from the inside-out. By this point, blood falls from Chūya in pools. Mindless to the strain, Chūya proceeds to destroy the rest of the area. Maniacal, he attempts to create another large black hole, but Dazai nullifies Corruption at the last second. Barely conscious, Chūya expresses anger that Dazai waited so long to nullify Corruption, anger worsened when Dazai says he did so for fun. To Chūya, it's yet another violation of trust Dazai takes glee in. He attempts to punch him but passes out. In the end, Dazai leaves him behind.
It's not until he recovers and the Guild has been defeated that Chūya returns. In celebration of victory, he presents a 1964 Romanée-Conti to Mori and Kōyō, the three in a meeting. Kōyō asks if he's sure, knowing the wine to be a prized possession of his. Chūya assures her he'd been saving the wine for such an occasion. The three clink their glasses together, and Chūya asks what Akutagawa's punishment for acting without orders will be. Mori informs him Akutagawa won't be punished, as he succeeded in the Mafia's main goal of taking out the Guild. Whilst Mori and Kōyō converse, Chūya's already drunk before he's even finished his glass.
History: Dark Era Arc
During the events of Dark Era, Dazai was one of the five Port Mafia Executives. He was the youngest person to become an executive in Port Mafia history (being considered as an executive before he was even 16, and a living legend within the Mafia as well) to the extent that there is a saying going around the mafia: "The misfortune of Dazai's enemies is to have Dazai as their enemy". In the years he was an Executive, roughly half of the Mafia's overall profits could be solely attributed to him, to the extent that Ōgai Mori mentioned that, "Given another four or five years, I wouldn't be surprised if Dazai killed me and took over my position." He was also a specialist at torturing people for information, claiming to Kōyō Ozaki that, "There hasn't been a single prisoner who hasn't spilled everything under my interrogation."
History: Dark Era Arc
He even gave Akutagawa spartan training in using his Ability and was the one who gave Akutagawa the idea of cutting space to shield himself.
The trigger for Dazai leaving the Mafia was his old friend Oda Sakunosuke, a low-ranked Mafia member—who was killed in the conflict between Port Mafia and Mimic, orchestrated by Mori to obtain an official license from the government: proof of the government expressing silent consent of the Port Mafia's existence and its activities as an organization. Already distraught from the knowledge that Mori intentionally drove Oda Sakunosuke into a suicidal attack against the enemy commander, Dazai took Oda's last words to heart—"I know it makes no difference to you, but please become a good human being. Save the weak, protect the orphaned. I suppose you don't care for either justice or evil...but striving to be a better person is a wonderful thing"—and decided to leave the Mafia.
It is stated by Akutagawa that, during a mission, he suddenly aborted it and supposedly, defected from the Mafia. Dazai later tracked down Taneda, who was the acting commander for the Japanese ministry's Special Abilities Division and requested to work in a place where he can help people. Taneda initially thought that Dazai wanted a position in the Special Abilities Division, and so expressed hesitancy, but Dazai said that he does not do well in a place with too many rules. Taneda then recommended the Armed Detective Agency to Dazai, on the condition that he'll need at least two years laying low to cleanse his past. Later, it was his friend, Ango Sakaguchi who assisted him with that. It is unknown what he was doing during those two years, but it is mentioned by Dazai himself (though the extent of the truth of the matter is unknown) that before meeting the Armed Detective Agency, he was unemployed and unmotivated and drunk in a bar that he used to frequent.
History: Stormbrinder
Chūya is first seen as a sixteen year old boy being hosted a party by the Flags, a group of young Mafia members under 25 who are all very accomplished in their work. The party is a celebration for Chūya for completing his first year in the Mafia, and they present a photo as evidence to them going behind Mori's back to find out Chūya's background, showing he was once an ordinary child who lived in a rural part of Japan. This is quickly interrupted by Adam Frankenstein. He proceeds to have a short fight with the group before explaining his purpose of being there, as a robot agent created by a scientist with the intent on helping humanity. When his attempts at talking to the group prove futile, he grabs Chūya under his arm and runs away with the boy.
History: Stormbrinder
He explains to Chūya the in danger he's in, from an assassin by the name of Paul Verlaine- and that he was sent on a mission to subjugate the assassin.
Chūya escapes from Adam, only to be caught by Verlaine. Verlaine reveals he slayed the Flags during Chūya's absence, and explains that we wants to kill anyone Chūya has a reason to stay in the Port Mafia/Yokohama for. He tries to bargain with Chūya, referring to himself as Chūya's older brother in a sense of shared inhumanity. This does not go over well, and so he partially opens the 'gate' within the Chūya. This makes Chūya's ability go haywire till Dazai comes to nullify it. Chūya then arrives at the bar, where he witnesses his friends' corpses.
Later, Chūya attended his friends' funeral and cracks the floor in anger when Adam unintentionally angered him by pestering him about having a meeting during the ceremony. However, Chūya was forced to go by Mori and takes Adam to find who else Verlaine may target, Shirase, who works in a factory following the dissolution of the Sheep. Adam is surprised when Chūya is insulted by his former friend, who flees, leading to a chase. Shirase is quickly caught by an officer, Murase, who happens to know Chūya and they all go to the police station.
At the police station, Chūya is revolted by Adam's attempt at killing time (the "Name Strange Human Traits" game) banned the robot from the game. Chūya asks Adam if he thinks the Port Mafia's lawyer will be able to get Shirase released, to which the robot replies "while possible, it will take a while." explaining the police already found twenty firearms with the serial number scratched off in Shirase home.Additionally the police's real target is Chūya himself, so they will most likely keep Shirase for the full forty-eight hours. When Chūya suggests that maybe Adam can get his boss to pull some strings, he is then informed of the complex international laws regarding Verlaine's case.
History: Stormbrinder
He states that he does not trust Dazai, and that he cannot get into contact with him anyways.
When Chūya is brought into the interrogation room Detective Murase asks him to sell out the Port Mafia in return for Shirase, to which Chūya refuses. The Detective then takes Chūya on a walk passing some of the other officers, all of which show gratitude towards Murase as they pass. Each officer shows admiration and it is clear how much the Detective has helped others. Chūya states how he doesn't want to get in the way of Murase's work and asks him to blatantly leave him alone. In response Murase tells Chūya about a job his brother managed to snag him as a bodyguard. They told him shoot to kill but a particular group of kids wouldn't run away when threatened because they would be killed if they returned empty-handed. The boy that Murase shot was around Chūya's age and then tells Chūya that he wants to help him return to the world of the light before a criminal organization treats his life as disposable. He insists that him and the law can help Chūya. At that moment the stations alarms start blaring.
Chūya comes to Adam Frankenstein's and Shirase's rescue, attacking Verlaine with hyper-fast attacks. At first this combat style relying entirely on speed seems to be very effective against Verlaine, but it didn't last long. Verlaine slammed Chūya through the wall and his body crashed into police vehicles. Verlaine took Chūya by the neck and attempted to open his gate once again, before suddenly Detective Murase shot Verlaine's arm, releasing Chūya. The Detective runs towards Chūya with concern asking if he was alright. Chūya tells the Detective to run before Verlaine snaps Murase neck, instantly killing him. A small outdated blue phone falls out of Murase's pocket and both Chūya and Adam realize that Detective Murase was the first target all along.
History: Fifteen arc
Roughly at the age of seven, Chūya's merged with the ability singularity Arahabaki. Essentially, the personification of calamity and destruction, Arahabaki is not a sentient being, nor is it a god, it is nothing more than a mass of energy. Although Chūya had no concept beyond his own existence, he knew something restrained and sealed him away from the outside world.
One day, Arthur Rimbaud and his partner infiltrated the facility to steal a powerful weapon. However, at the last moment his partner betrayed him and his country. Having been cornered by the military he attempted to absorb the skill weapon. However, at the last moment his partner betrayed him and his country. Having been cornered by the military he attempted to absorb the skill weapon. He failed, having only absorbed the seal, which resulted in the release of Arahabaki which decimated the facility and almost everyone in it, save Rimbaud. This, was the creation of Suribachi city, also known as the slums.

Although his own being with a will and personality, Chūya has no memories of his life before seven years old, the same age Arahabaki and he completely merged. He recalls the existence of Arahabaki, surrounded by blue-black darkness, sealed away in the facility, but not how Arahabaki's seal had been removed nor why he formed his own personality and being. He only recalls someone's hand pulling him from the seal and freeing him. Since then, he made finding out the truth of his origins his main priority.
Roughly at the age of eight, Chūya joined The Sheep, a group consisting of kids and teens who banded together to create a self-defense force to fight back against gangs, looting, and human trafficking. With Chūya's Upon the Tainted Sorrow, he acted as Sheep's trump card. Although not the 'King of the Sheep', many mistake him as such because of his overwhelming power, but strictly speaking, Chūya was only a member of the council they developed. Nonetheless, he felt a strong sense of responsibility for Sheep's well-being, priding himself as their trump. Thanks to him, Sheep's reputation and turf increased as to cause issues even for the Port Mafia.
When fifteen, the Sheep endured a vicious attack by the Port Mafia. Chūya hunted down the Mafiosi responsible. One of the Mafiosi he tracked down, on a plane, nearly crushed to death, told him they had no choice but to retaliate. According to him, Arahabaki itself destroyed one of the Port Mafia's armories. This caught Chūya's attention, and thus he proceeds his investigation after killing the Mafiosi.
He later arrived in Suribachi City, attacking Osamu Dazai and Ryūrō Hirotsu. He demanded they inform him of the Mafia’s investigation of Arahabaki. He and Hirotsu end up fighting, but thanks to Dazai's No Longer Human, Chūya was defenseless. However he later gained the upper hand and freed himself - but an explosion knocked the group unconscious. Chūya was defenseless.
History: Fifteen arc
However he later gained the upper hand and freed himself - but an explosion knocked the group unconscious.
When Chūya came to, he'd been restrained by Rando, a sub-executive able to conjure a hyperspace sub-region. Here, he met Ōgai Mori, the Port Mafia's new boss. Mori invited him to join Port Mafia, much to Chūya's annoyance. Chūya knew Mori killed his previous boss, but the knowledge did nothing to deter Mori from his own goal of using Chūya to further the Mafia's investigation of Arahabaki. To ensure Chūya complied, Mori had members of Sheep taken hostage, holding their lives over Chūya so he couldn't harm the Mafia anymore, and more importantly, work alongside them. As insurance, he made him listen to a transmitter picking up Sheep members' panic and screams.
Moreover, he makes Chūya and Dazai - already on ill terms with each other - work together. His first reasoning for this being, someone outside the Mafia will have an easier time investigating the rumors, his second being Dazai will be able to insure Chūya would not be able to betray them and the last reason, not shared with the two is that "'Only a diamond can polish a diamond...'" A quote told to him by his teacher Natsume. Both powerless against Mori's word, the two agreed to his terms.
During their investigations, they run into members of GSS, another group opposing the Port Mafia. Chūya succeeded in taking them down, forcing Dazai to stop shooting an already dead man, unnerved by his apathy and sadism over even the dead. They later reach Rando's residence, ransacked by GSS, here, Rando explained his own witnessing of Arahabaki.
Later, at an arcade center, Chūya and Dazai made a bet that the one who won in a fighting game would get a reward. If Chūya won, he could identify the culprit - but when Dazai won, he tried making Chūya obey his commands like a mere dog.
Members of Sheep meet Chūya in the arcade, confused and angry at his absence when their own members were in danger.
History: Fifteen arc
Now, he intended on killing Chūya, planning to recreate the memories of that day and unveil the truth. All for trying to recall the final moments of his friend and partner Paul Verlaine.
Chūya understood Rimbaud's reasoning, but it did not stop him from pursuing Rimbaud. He elaborated a philosophy of never removing his gloves nor used his hands in a fight. To him, he never felt the urgency of a fight nor the danger of violence, knowing his origins weren't human and thus not fully understanding the depth of such emotions as he grew up. He considered his personality and nothing more than something to keep Arahabaki's true nature stable. Not using his hands, he'd eventually fall in a fight, unable to enjoy the rush of violence nor defend himself. He'd do anything to protect himself, he thought, maybe he'd start to like himself as a person.
After fatally injuring Rimbaud, Chūya heard out his final wish - for Chūya to live. He assured Chūya he lived a human life already, as humans all existed as 'frames' for deeper experiences.
A month after Rimbaud's death, Chūya visited his grave, revealing that Rimbaud died with the truth of Arahabaki, and everything else of it lost in obscurity.
Sheep's member Shirase found him, apologizing before telling Chūya Sheep found a better method to protect themselves. He stabbed Chūya in the back revealing that the Sheep and GSS had joined forces. He revealed that they'd realised that the Sheep relied on Chūya's powers and his whims too much, having feared that he's betrayed them they decided to kill Chūya. Chūya managed to escape and fell into the sea.
Onshore, he and Dazai reunite. Dazai, now an official mafioso with his own squadron, received orders to kill all Sheep and GSS. However, he'd make an exception if Chūya desired. Chūya told him not to kill Sheep. Dazai agreed, ordering his squadron to carry out the plan they already decided on. Just then, Chūya realized Dazai always intended on causing the rift between the Sheep.
Chūya Nakahara (Relationships): Arthur Rimbaud
" Tsk. Still a pain in the ass even after death. The Mafia threw away all the records you collected when you were alive, so I'm having a hard time investigating. Now I don't have any leads on what that military facility was that you snuck into eight years ago and why Arahabaki was there. Eh, not that you would've told anyone about that stuff even if you were alive… See you again soon. ” —Chūya visits Rimbaud's grave
Chūya first met the Mafia sub-executive Randō after a run-in with the "resurrected" previous Mafia boss and being brought to the Mafia. Initially aloof towards the man, Chūya later comes to know more about the European agent Rimbaud and develops a complex grasp on the latter's motives from eight years ago in the duration of their clash, ultimately understanding Rimbaud until his final moments.
Knowing the former sub-executive's influence on Chūya, Mori gives him Rimbaud's hat as a symbol of recruitment in the Mafia as tradition of being given something from the one who recruited the mafioso into the organization. Moreover, one month after Rimbaud's death, Chūya visited his grave and told him of the trouble regarding his confiscated Arahabaki records. Nevertheless, Chūya assured him that he shall return to the rural cemetery when he can.
Chūya Nakahara (Relationships): Paul Verlaine
“ I'm gonna find him, but I won't let you arrest him. I'm gonna kill the man myself. You murder someone's family, the Mafia's gonna make you pay. ” —Chūya decides to hunt down Verlaine
Paul Verlaine and Chūya share a very complex relationship. Verlaine first met Chūya when Chūya was sixteen. He told Chūya that he is his older brother, before asking him to leave the Port Mafia to come with him. In a effort to convince Chūya to do this, the professional assassin begins to methodically kill anyone Chūya has a reason to stay in the Port Mafia or Yokohama for.
Chūya Nakahara (Relationships): Ōgai Mori
“ I dedicate my blood—my everything—to you, boss. I will protect this organization you slave over and work myself to the bone in order to decimate its enemies. Those who oppose the Port Mafia will learn firsthand how ruthless gravity can be. ” —Chūya pledges loyalty to Mori and the Port Mafia
Chūya, then a 15-year-old member of the Sheep, was asked by the new Port Mafia boss Mori to work alongside Osamu Dazai to investigate the alleged reappearance of his recently deceased predecessor and, along the way, the mysterious Arahabaki, although this choice was met with disagreement from both sides.
Towards the end of such events, Chūya questions Mori's perception of what it means to be a leader. Mori asserts that being a leader entails being both a king and a servant to their subjects, an answer that makes Chūya realize his shortcomings as one of Sheep's leaders, having earned him the alias of the Sheep King (羊の王, Hitsuji no Ō?). Chūya ends up joining the Mafia and pledges his loyalty to Mori and the organization, vowing to use his capabilities to protect them.
Eventually, Mori promotes Chūya to an executive. With this position, Chūya appears headstrong and dedicated in doing whatever he can in his power to protect the Mafia and Mori as its boss. During the events of Cannibalism, Chūya did not hesitate to fight the Armed Detective Agency and kill their president, knowing that it is the only option given them in order to save Mori. Despite Kōyō Ozaki's reluctance in playing straight into their opponent's hands, Chūya nonetheless assembles and heads the Mafia to settle the issue in a blood feud with the armed detectives.
All in all, Chūya and Mori have mutual and professional rapport, with Chūya accepting Mori's assignments whenever possible out of trust in the boss' schemes and plans. Such include being sent as a personal envoy to deal with the Agency during the Guild war and aiding the Agency on the run from the Hunting Dogs.
Chūya Nakahara (Relationships): Kōyō Ozaki
Kōyō was originally assigned as Chūya's overseer, and the two share a very familiar bond. Chūya refers to her as "big sis" (姐さん, ane-san?, lit. "elder sister"), something that annoyed her at first since she didn't think she was old enough for that nickname. However, she later grew to accept it.
As fellow executives, Chūya holds Kōyō in high respect and appears to work together at times. For instance, Chūya and Kōyō deliberated on the optimal solution of saving the boss after getting afflicted with the Cannibalism virus. From a mere glance, Kōyō immediately knew that Chūya was willing to take on the Agency and kill their president, something Kōyō displayed reluctance in. However, they soon presumably saw eye to eye, as the Mafia soon ends up engaging the Agency.
Chūya Nakahara (Relationships): Ryūnosuke Akutagaw
Though Chūya and Akutagawa rarely interacted with each other, there are few instances of Chūya mentioning Akutagawa to others, including how he might have been fooled by Dazai after getting captured and asking Mori of Akutagawa's punishment for breaching the détente with the Agency during the Guild war after the mafioso infiltrated the Moby Dick by himself. Nevertheless, Chūya seemingly acknowledges Akutagawa as one of their valuable mafiosi, later working with him as part of a short-lived siege team to attack the Agency's primary members during the Cannibalism operation.
From the glimpses shown in the aftermath of the Yokohama fog incident, Chūya is highly knowledgeable of Akutagawa's perception of Dazai and therefore tells the mafioso right away that the latter has now fled. The executive also trusts him enough to lend him a shoulder afterwards in his post-Corruption state.
In other media, Chūya has shown concern and care towards Akutagawa when the Mafia heads to the hot springs on Mori's orders. Chūya acted as a caring and wise mentor towards Akutagawa and even gave him advice about the former's complicated relationship with Dazai.
Chūya Nakahara (Relationships): Ryūrō Hirotsu
“ Ha-ha! How kind of you to share. But don't expect me to go easy on ya just 'cause you’re old. ” —Chūya before engaging Hirotsu in battle
Chūya and Hirotsu first met as part of different organizations, particularly when Hirotsu escorted Dazai to Suribachi City in investigating the reappearance of the previous Mafia boss. They both engaged in a brief hostile banter before fighting in a skirmish, only ending after the previous boss apparently surfaced.
In later years and after joining the Mafia, Chūya does not seem to hold a grudge on Hirotsu, as he works side by side with the veteran mafioso and the Black Lizard in some occasions. Chūya even reprimanded Hirotsu and his fellow commanders once during the Guild war due to a brief incident involving an infant. Outside work, Chūya appears to drink with Hirotsu and Motojirō Kajii, who both seem to be aware of his tendency to rant while intoxicated.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Doppo Kunikida
He's someone who can stand at the forefront… One who's strong, unwavering, and aware of his weaknesses. A person capable of rising above everyone else. The next in line… could only be Kunikida-kun. ” —Dazai recognizes Kunikida's leadership qualities
Kunikida is Dazai's partner in the Agency, with whom he shares opposite traits. Ever since their first meeting, Dazai frequently likes to tease and make Kunikida angry to the point of ruining his ideal schedule for a day, even to the point of desperately finding ways to disrupt his schedule. He also tends to tell Kunikida various trivia and seemingly vital information for Kunikida to jot down in his notebook, only for Dazai to usually retort that they were merely jokes, which naturally irritates his partner.
During the initial phase of their partnership in the wake of the Azure Apostle's messages, Dazai and Kunikida were able to track down the mastermind behind the messages in spite of various peculiarities along the way, including Dazai's shady past, rare nullification ability, and enigmatic character. This eventually reached a point when Dazai admitted that he is the Azure Apostle, only for Kunikida to see through this façade and successfully deceive the real Azure Apostle. At this point, Dazai asserted his trust towards Kunikida, knowing that the latter would not aim a gun at other people out of the blue without hearing a needed explanation.
Despite their boisterous partnership, Dazai and Kunikida grew to share a mutual trust towards each other, quite apparent during cases in the field. Even during their first time as partners in the Agency, Dazai's instincts especially during combat complimented Kunikida's, such as when they respectively fought a big man and a blond man.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Atsushi Nakajima
“ Stop feeling sorry for yourself. As long as you do… your life will be an unending nightmare. ” —Dazai advises Atsushi
On their first meeting, Dazai was saved by Atsushi from drowning, though Dazai retorted that he was actually committing suicide. Through this chance encounter, Dazai came to know Atsushi's recent expulsion from his orphanage and eventually deduce that their erstwhile target, a man-eating tiger, is Atsushi himself. After taking a glimpse at Atsushi's low self-esteem, Dazai decided to hire him into the Agency. In truth, Dazai had wished to test a theory whether Atsushi can take on the mantle of being half of a new Twin Dark with Akutagawa, in order to prepare for the "real catastrophe" lurking within Yokohama.
Along the course of events, Dazai serves as a mentor figure towards Atsushi. Despite Atsushi being frequently caught up in Dazai's eccentric shenanigans, Dazai would nonetheless offer some pieces of advice towards the rookie detective regarding various fields. Furthermore, Dazai's theatrics do not take away his serious persona towards Atsushi and more often than not shows genuine care and attention towards the youngster. In some instances, Dazai would snap Atsushi out of wallowing in self-pity, even to the point of slapping him and asking him not to pity himself. Essentially, Dazai appears to perceive Atsushi as a capable individual with a lot of potential, which is one of the reasons why he chose to recommend Atsushi to the Agency.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Yukichi Fukuzawa
Dazai and Fukuzawa have a positive professional relationship. Dazai respects Fukuzawa as their President and, likewise, Fukuzawa treats Dazai like any of his subordinates. Prior Atsushi's entrance exam, Dazai sought the President's approval regarding hiring the mantiger, to which Fukuzawa assigned him to oversee the entrance exam. After Atsushi passes his exam, Dazai asked for Fukuzawa's decision once more, with which the President approved Atsushi to be under Dazai's care, showcasing their mutual trust. In the anime, Dazai initially recommended Atsushi to Fukuzawa. Since the President believes that power does not make one a member in the Agency, Dazai used this very premise to suggest hiring the youngster into the Agency.
Like other members of the Agency, Dazai holds utmost regard towards the President. Given his laid-back attitude, Dazai would choose to carry out the President's tasks even during times of utter boredom. In a similar way, the President would personally participate in Dazai's schemes in the most vital scenarios. One such case is Kyōka's entrance exam, which was planned by Dazai and Ranpo to have the President activate his ability on and save their newest official member during the process.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Ranpo Edogawa
“ That was incredible! You are without a doubt an extraordinary detective! I'm so glad I joined this agency! ” —Dazai praises Ranpo's deduction skills
Hailed as the Agency's sharpest detectives (双璧, Sōheki?, lit. "Double Jade"), Dazai and Ranpo are the organization's intellectual group. Dazai first met Ranpo as a newcomer in the Agency, during which he witnessed Ranpo's Super Deduction firsthand, only to find out that Ranpo is a non-ability user after touching his hair while deducing and failing to nullify it. This earned Dazai's great respect towards Ranpo's genius intellectual prowess and pure deduction ability, which also shocked Kunikida after finding out about it for the first time through Dazai. As a result, Dazai and the rest of the Agency members respect Ranpo despite the way he behaves in the Agency.
Later on, Dazai's and Ranpo's collaboration are explicitly shown while planning the Moby Dick infiltration. Their conversation, through Atsushi's perspective, merely consisted of audibly vague ideas, though the both of them seem to have a mutual thought process and understanding as to how they shall go about their scheme, which ultimately led to their success.
This unseen dynamic apparently persists in various instances, such as after the Yokohama fog incident, specifically when Ranpo returns back to reality and ambiguously calls out to Dazai while musing on the events he predictably deduced. In one of their cases in Standard Island, Dazai made sure to contact and update Ranpo after sensing in advance that the agents would be in trouble, hence leaving the rest of the matter in Ranpo's hands and eventually saved the Agency members and many people in the island.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Kyōka Izumi
“ See… Kyōka-chan, you don't know everything about our Agency or yourself. Nobody can truly know it all. That's where one's 'potential' comes in. ” —Dazai to Kyōka
Dazai first met Kyōka when she was still part of the Mafia on orders to bring him to their base. Eventually, when Kyōka becomes an unofficial part of their team, Dazai advises Atsushi to take care of Kyōka as her roommate, which Atsushi enthusiastically accepts.
Later, during Kyōka's arrest in the course of the three-way conflict, Dazai communicates with her in an attempt to change her outlook and perspective in life. Though Kyōka was hopeless regarding her situation as a former assassin, Dazai gave her another chance and assured her that she is not entirely unfit to be part of the Agency. In the end, his words channeled a sense of renewal in Kyōka, who was then willing to sacrifice her life to save Yokohama, paving way to her official entrance to the Agency after passing her secret entrance exam.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Akiko Yosano
Like the rest of the Agency members, Dazai views Yosano as a vital asset to ensure their survival, hence having his fellow members to protect her at all costs during the three-way organizational conflict with the Mafia and the Guild. On another note, Dazai seems to agree with Yosano's belief that "death is the fairest judge of all".
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): siblings Tanizaki
Nonetheless, Dazai occasionally contacts Tanizaki during work-related instances, such as during Dazai's absences or as backup. Moreover, Dazai once asked permission from Tanizaki to have his sister act as a hostage for Atsushi's entrance exam when he "thought" he was going to act as the bomber.
Dazai once presumably advised Naomi that, in case one shares the same intel with the enemy, the side who does the unexpected wins, but one loses by default when the enemy gains more intel. This later helped Naomi and Kirako Haruno a chance to prematurely escape from John Steinbeck and Howard Phillips Lovecraft during the Guild war.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Kenji Miyazawa
As with other Agency members, Dazai has a good rapport with Kenji. Because of the latter's innocent and direct ideas, even Dazai appears to sometimes be speechless with his suggestions when asked.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Sakunosuke Oda
“ He was a friend of mine. He's the reason I quit the Port Mafia and joined the Agency. I'd probably still be killing people for the Mafia if it wasn't for him. ” —Dazai tells Atsushi about Oda anonymously
While Dazai was an executive of the Port Mafia, the lowest-ranking member Oda was his best friend and, as Dazai stated, the only one who could come close to understanding him. Along with Ango Sakaguchi, he and Oda were drinking buddies. Other members of the Port Mafia often remarked that it was odd that the lowest-ranking member was friends with an executive. However, behind Oda's back, Dazai warned them about the mafioso's strength and skills that surpass even Akutagawa's, indicating his firm belief in Oda's capabilities as a gifted marksman and in general.
As the friendship among the three mafioso started to collapse, Dazai confessed to Oda and Ango that he knew very well about the intrinsic probability of losing the ones he does not wish to lose the most, hence anticipating such thing to happen anytime in his life. Dazai later opened up to Oda that he joined the Mafia in his quest to find a reason to live. He thought that being close to death and violence would make him witness the rawness and inner nature of humankind firsthand. However, though Dazai asked Oda to expect good things to come and redirect his focus on other aspects of life, Dazai was unable to dissuade Oda from heading into his battle alone. Eventually, Dazai requested Mori to send reinforcements for Oda for the mere reason that he was his friend amidst Mori's reproach.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Ryunosuke Akutagawa
Though Akutagawa was initially reluctant of Dazai's offer and even attacked him with his ability, Dazai promised to give him anything he wished for, despite not guaranteeing that it would be an easy path to undertake. Akutagawa nonetheless responded that he wanted a reason to live, which Dazai assured to grant and wrapped his black coat around Akutagawa, formally welcoming him into the Mafia.
Under his direct unit, Dazai trained Akutagawa rigidly to hone his ability, combat skills, and fortitude, usually resorting to harsh and forceful bouts to have Akutagawa refine Rashōmon. Using his nullification ability and physical prowess, Dazai personally fought Akutagawa and lectured him to aggressive lengths, warning him to fight back whenever needed to last long in the Mafia, lest he would return to being a stray dog. In essence, Dazai viewed Akutagawa as a sword without a sheath; though he believed Akutagawa has the potential to be the Mafia's strongest ability user, Dazai thought then that someone needed to teach him how to put that sword away.
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Ōgai Mori
“ You were afraid, weren't you, Mori-san? Afraid I'd cut out your windpipe and assume the boss' seat. Just as you did to the last boss. ” —Dazai exposes Mori in front of his subordinates
For reasons still vague, Dazai and Mori met by fateful encounter; Dazai, who attempted suicide when he was 14 years old, was presumably attended to by Mori as a physician. During this time, Dazai and Mori became "collaborators" in carrying out the then Port Mafia boss' assassination. As a result, Dazai became the only witness of Mori killing the boss and claiming the position of Mafia boss. Dazai, however, claimed that Mori miscalculated making an accomplice out of him. Contrary to his strategy that Dazai would die shortly after the incident due to his suicide, Dazai has not died then, further planting anxiety in Mori as long as Dazai is alive and knows about the previous boss's assassination.
A year later, Dazai and Mori formed an ambiguous relationship, in which Dazai was not considered a subordinate of Mori nor of the Mafia. Even when Mori became the head of the Mafia, Dazai's nightmarish and intimidating thoughts challenged Mori's strategizing, so much that he could not move easily or recklessly in Dazai's presence with his unstable reputation as the new Mafia boss at the time. Nonetheless, Dazai accepted Mori's assignment to investigate the alleged reappearance of his Mafia predecessor in exchange for medicine that can grant him a "comfortable death".
Osamu Dazai (Relationships): Ango Sakaguchi
“ Good to see you here, Ango. What on earth made you think… that I had forgiven you? ” —Dazai's grudge towards Ango
During his days as a Mafia executive, Dazai and Ango, along with Oda, were drinking buddies and would talk about their work without their positions nor ages get in the way of their mundane conversations. They frequently ran into one another for some reason, a gathering which Oda thought is a guise of communication in trying to avoid something. Oda also noted that the three of them would spend time in the bar until the dead of night.
However, their friendship started to collapse when Ango was uncovered to be a triple spy in the Mafia and the Special Division. Dazai confessed to Ango and Oda that he knew very well about the intrinsic probability of losing the ones he does not wish to lose the most, hence anticipating such thing to happen anytime in his life. Nonetheless, compared to Oda, Dazai seemed to have been affected by Ango's "betrayal" the most, especially since this eventually set off a string of events that led to Oda's death, despite the entire scheme being manipulated by Mori since the beginning.
Years later, as a result of their fallout, Dazai appears to hold a grudge towards Ango. When he contacted the latter during the three-way conflict, Dazai verbally asserted how he seemingly has not yet forgiven Ango most likely due to the Mimic incident. Ango merely responded how he was the one responsible for cleaning Dazai's ledger, to which Dazai retracted holding him at gunpoint and eventually sought out the Special Division's help in the Guild war, only for the both of them to be embroiled in a car accident. In the end, Dazai ambiguously answered with a dark smirk when Ango inquired how he was the only one seriously injured from the accident, indicating a probable hint of his involvement in the incident.
During the Decay of the Angel' terrorism plot, Dazai notably chose Ango to be his middle-man whil
