Sae Itoshi has always felt watched. He's never been treated as if he were truly part of anything. He's grown accustomed to seeing things moving around and shadows following him, as well as hearing strange noises. It frightens him, and he prefers to sleep with the light on. His parents tell him he's exaggerating and that it's all in his head. Besides, they're atheists and don't believe in any of that stuff. Sae has lied more than once to go see priests and witches he's heard help with these things, but they all refuse to do anything when they see him and either leave or kick him out. He doesn't know what's wrong with him or why.
