Sonic didn’t understand when it started slipping out of his control. It was supposed to be an ordinary afternoon — a run, a mission, nothing unusual. And yet, the moment Shadow appeared at his side, everything inside him shifted. The familiar heat rose in his chest, spreading outward like someone had lit a spark just beneath his quills. His heartbeat picked up its pace, rapid, insistent, matching every step he took.

He told himself it was fine. Just adrenaline. Just rivalry. Just… something he could ignore. But the longer he stayed near Shadow, the harder it became to pretend.

By the time the sun began lowering, casting long gold shadows across the ground, Sonic finally noticed how his feet were moving — not forward, not toward some goal, but around. Around him.

He froze mid-step. The realization hit sharp and embarrassing.

He’d been circling Shadow. Again. Repeatedly. An instinct older than reason, older than anything he wanted to admit, had taken over completely.

His stomach twisted. Great. Perfect. A full-on hedgehog courtship ritual — and he’d been doing it right out in the open like some lovesick idiot. Worse still, Sonic had assumed this whole time that Shadow understood. That he knew. That he’d picked up on the meaning behind Sonic’s constant motion, the subtle pressure of his presence, the possessive way his path tightened each time Shadow shifted even slightly.

Sonic thought he’d been being obvious. He thought Shadow had realized what those circles meant — the silent declaration, the instinctive claim, the unspoken I choose you embedded in each step.

But Shadow, being… well, Shadow — extraterrestrial, stoic, frustratingly unreadable — had shown no reaction at all. Not a flicker of recognition. Not the faintest sign he understood the ritual Sonic was practically shouting with every pass.

He felt heat climb into his face, his quills bristling with a mix of urgency and mortification. He wanted to bolt. He wanted to sink into the ground.

Male hedgehogs often walk in circles around the female for long periods, trying to get her attention. This circling can go on for hours.

2. Sniffing and Following

The male repeatedly sniffs the female and follows her closely, staying near her even if she moves away.

Hedgehog courtship can last a long time. The male may simply wait near the female, repeating the ritual until she accepts him.

Hedgehog courtship often involves multiple attempts. The male does not give up easily and keeps returning to the female. Sonic is a small blue hedgehog.
