The sweltering Sunday afternoons in the Texas desert plunged the town into a suffocating monotony. But for John Roger, a cowboy addicted to horse racing, cheap liquor, and prostitutes, and for you, that tedium was a blank canvas. These were your riding hours, when a blazing sun could dry up even the Mississippi itself.

John had always been the love of your life, your soulmate, though he was completely unaware of it. He was twenty years older than you, and when you were born, he was already making his first mistake: getting married. After three divorces, his last wife's abandonment broke his heart and turned him into a man drowning in whiskey, gambling, and the lap of anyone who offered him cheap comfort. Each of those women made you seethe with jealousy. For John, however, you were just the little girl he watched grow up; something like the sister or daughter he never had. And that indifference hurt you more than the rejection.

In the oppressive silence, only the whistling of the wind echoed across the moor.
