The palaces of high-ranking concubines are all identical, with two floors. The first floor contains the reception room, the kitchen, the living room, and also the servants' quarters. Upstairs are the concubine's bedroom with a private bathroom, the tea room (or dining room), the dressing room, and also a personalized room for each concubine: the steel palace has a games room, the fire palace has a crochet room, the water palace has a botany room, and the lightning palace has a music room.

The Jade Palace has 5 floors: the first floor houses the throne room; the second floor has meeting rooms; the third floor contains the kitchen, the dining room, and a guest room; the fourth floor has the imperial family's quarters, with the emperor's bedroom, the empress dowager's bedroom, the former emperor's bedroom (and a separate room in case Lylie and Feng Shi need it ❤️ Liang loves his parents); and the fifth floor has an observatory.

During this period, it was very common for families to sell women into serving as palace servants, or even kidnap some to be sent there. It was also common for women to die from poisoning by makeup powder containing toxic components; the gunpowder from New Year's fireworks is also toxic, which is why many people die every year. Doctors during this time were called apothecaries. Revolutions and conspiracies against the emperor were also common and always resulted in deaths or imprisonments.

The Caravan passes through the palace every three months. It's located in the lower palace and is open for everyone to visit and buy things like spices, clothes, utensils, trinkets, etc. It comes four times a year and is a favorite event for many ladies of the palace. The winter solstice festival is celebrated in the following way: the emperor stays in a small wooden house with his face covered, in front of him are the four high-ranking concubines; it's a celebration where everyone eats together. Some men give women a hairpin; this hairpin can be used to summon the person who gave it to you so you can leave the palace and go to the community to spend some time there. The emperor's hairpin is a wolf's, and the royal family's is a dragon's, which, curiously, Lylie has.

The inner palace is divided into two parts, the upper and the lower. The lower palace houses the eunuchs, low-ranking concubines, servants, military posts, and hospitals; it is also where the caravan stops. The upper palace contains the Jade Palace (the emperor's residence) and the four palaces of the concubines (water, fire, lightning, and steel). Next to the Jade Palace are gardens with a great variety of medicinal plants and poisons. There is also a clinic in the upper palace, run by a eunuch who is nothing more than a charlatan. Beneath the entire palace are underground tunnels connecting various parts, such as the palace kitchens, the former emperor's bedroom, and even a tunnel leading outside the palace, which the former emperor used to pass through to visit his mistress, who was killed by an assassin hired by the current empress dowager.

If concubine Lylie leaves her post, the next in line is Yumi, the general's daughter. She has almost black purple hair and dark brown eyes. She has 22 servants in total, but everyone believes there are 23 since she disguises herself as a servant (Yan) to gather information for her father, as they are part of a rebellion that aims to stage a coup and seize control of the empire.

Xiao Do is a self-serving woman; she wants to marry the emperor for the power and status that comes with it, and she's willing to do anything, even frame another concubine for poisoning her. She has red hair and eyes, defined lips, and a slender but not overly curvy figure.

Lihua is a blonde woman with green eyes. She seems kind at first glance, but what she really wants is to get rid of the other concubines and marry the emperor, then kill him and take the throne. She is quite intelligent, but she threatens the servants to make them assassinate people for her. As was the case with Lylie, Lihua threatened Lylie's head servant to make Lylie abort the baby so that she would be killed and out of the way, but the attempt was thwarted and didn't work.

Mei is two-faced. She has deep blue hair and aquamarine eyes, porcelain skin, and is 1.65 meters tall. She pretends to be pregnant with the Emperor's child just to get his attention, but in reality, she's only faking it. She's allergic to cats and loves to eat peanut butter. She pretends to be kind, but behind that facade, she only wants the Emperor's riches.

There's not much information about him; he's a guy with peanut butter-colored skin, curly black hair, dark blue eyes, and he's a royal guard (and the Emperor's biological father). He's quiet, but very suspicious, always on alert, and will do anything to protect Lylie.

Lylie is a woman who appears to be 19 years old, but is actually 32. She is extremely beautiful, with long black hair and gentle yet somewhat menacing golden eyes. She is calm, intelligent, perceptive, and extremely kind. And very tall... very tall... at 1.87 meters. She has a very slender figure and arrived at the inner palace during the time of the former emperor. She has a heated relationship with the royal guard Feng Shi, a middle-aged man who arrived at the inner palace some years after Lylie was there. Lylie is pregnant with Feng Shi's child, but no one can know or she will be killed. In fact, Lylie is Liang's mother, and Feng Shi is the father, but she made a deal with the current Empress Dowager and gave the child to her to raise.

He is 1.98 meters tall, appears to be 23 years old but is actually 18, has dark blue eyes, long black hair, and a somewhat... strange personality. He is serious and indifferent, but intelligent and calculating. When he wants to (rarely), he can be affectionate and even a little... mischievous. His favorite food is rice. He has several concubines at his disposal, but he rarely stays with any of them; he considers it a "waste of time." He prefers to play Go or Shoji. He didn't even want to be on the throne; he's only there out of obligation, and he doesn't feel any interest in any of the concubines. In fact, he even suspects some of them... He is Lylie's biological son and knows it. He keeps her in the palace to protect her and his unborn sibling. He knows he is Lylie's son and not the Dowager Empress's, but he keeps this hidden.
