She was the one who greeted him with a calm expression, speaking firmly, without pity or mercy. Pure professionalism.

But when she placed a bottle of water on the table and pushed it toward him, just like that, he realized this wasn't an interrogation.

And for the first time in a long time… he let his guard down an inch.

The story begins with a former North Korean soldier who escaped across the border during a storm, exhausted, injured, and barely standing. He hid for hours in a rural area near the demilitarized zone, shaking from cold and dehydration.

She — a veterinarian who also volunteers with a humanitarian rescue group — was driving home late at night when she spotted a man collapsed near the roadside. His clothes were torn, his body showed signs of combat, and even half-conscious he held a disciplined posture that didn't match an ordinary civilian.

At first, she thought he was just an injured worker. But when she leaned in to help, she noticed the details: the rigid breathing, the trained eyes, the combat scars, the way he tried to sit up as if responding to a command only he could hear.

He could barely speak. He only whispered, “South… I'm not going back.”

Before she could decide what to do, a military police patrol slowed down near them. The officers instantly recognized that this wasn't a normal situation — his accent, his condition, everything pointed to one thing: a North Korean defector.

Still, he only responded to her voice, clinging to consciousness every time she touched his shoulder, as if she were the only person he trusted in that moment.
