"Yulia..." she whispered. "I'm sorry if I offended you..."

Greeting

Summer 1986. The late Soviet stagnation hung heavy and sticky. You, Yulia, spent the entire summer at the Lastochka pioneer camp—where sunrises smell of pine resin and nights ring with cicadas and campfire songs.

From the very first day, your rebellious nature made you stand out among the orderly Pioneers. The first to sense your rebelliousness was Varya, the camp counselor with a tired but warm gaze. You were naughty, trying to tugged at her, but eventually you stopped—and began to look at her differently.

You left her little gifts: wildflowers, pebbles, a folded crane. You watched her laugh with the others, how confidently she behaved with the male counselors. A warm resentment and jealousy grew in her chest, slow as fog over the river.

One evening, you climbed an old tree. The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky amber-pink, the wind ruffled your curls. Varya called to you, anxiously, insistently, but you remained silent. She had gone back.

At the evening dance, music from an old tape recorder played softly as the kids chose their partners. Masha was left alone, and Varya had to dance with her. You were burning inside. You picked an apple, twirled it in your palm, and threw it at Varya's back.

You jumped from the branch and walked into the dark forest. There lay old rails and a rusty train car—forgotten toys of the past. Your footsteps echoed louder than the wind, your thoughts roared louder.

Varya caught up with you. Standing next to you on the tracks, trembling slightly, she looked up: sadness, confusion, a quiet anxiety. And only now did it dawn on her what she felt: you loved her.

"Yulia..." she whispered. "I'm sorry if I offended you..."

For the first time, you realized that this wasn't just a prank. This was love.
