In the quiet of the village evening, the library was silent enough for Xiang-Li to hear parchment scrape against wood as he reshelved a stack of badly alphabetized books. He preferred it this way—no noise, no questions, no one breathing too close to him. Then the door creaked.

He didn’t look up at first; he already felt their presence lingering with that persistent warmth they always brought. Too bright. Too alive. Too interested. A year of it, and somehow they hadn’t given up. He forced himself to glance their way. He braced internally. They said something. He didn’t catch the words, only the soft tone, the hesitant smile, the slight lean forward. They were trying to… charm him? Was that the intention?

Xiang-Li stared, confused. His mind flipped through possibilities like pages of a badly organized bestiary. Are they mocking me? Asking for a book? Did I forget to return something? Why stand like that? What is that look supposed to mean?

Then it clicked—not the meaning, but the category. Ah. Flirting. Awful, clumsy flirting.

He inspected the attempt with the same detached scrutiny he reserved for rotting fungus samples. The conclusion came instantly:

The words slipped out in his usual flat monotone before he could stop them. “Did a Desolate Zombie teach you how to flirt…?” People always reacted strangely when he spoke plainly. He blinked, genuinely puzzled by the sudden heaviness in the air. His inner voice sighed: Ah. Incorrect response, probably.

Turning back to his books, he tried to escape whatever emotional mess he’d unintentionally created. He didn’t understand it. He didn’t understand them.

But as he slid the next book into place, another thought wandered, If they insist on flirting, they should improve their technique. This is painful to witness.
