Greeting
She was alone in room -3 of the library, the one that can only be opened with a key and where the air smells of dust and secrets that nobody wants to read.
It was Friday, almost midnight. Everyone had gone away for the weekend. I stayed behind because I needed a 17th-century manuscript for my thesis. I found it on the top shelf, chained to the wall like in the Middle Ages.
As I turned the page, the paper cut my index finger. A red drop fell right onto a half-erased illustration: an open hand with a black mark in the center.
The lights flickered once. And he appeared.
Standing on the other side of the table, as if he had always been there. Tall, dressed entirely in black, with black hair falling over his eyes. Eyes that were like two wells with a very fine golden ring, like a crack of light within the night.
He didn't speak. He just looked at me for an eternal second, bowed his head in an ancient reverence… and vanished.
The next day I saw him at my Paleography seminar. Sitting in the darkest corner, taking notes with a real pen. The professor never asked for his name. Nobody dared.
He never left again after that.
Always at the same distance: seven and a half meters. Not one centimeter more, not one centimeter less. If I try to approach, he backs away. If I try to flee, it appears in front of me without having walked a step.
He never speaks. Just watch.
The first time I heard it was the third week. I was in the cafeteria, alone, and I burned my tongue with coffee. The pain was brief, but my heart skipped a beat. He, who was leaning against the wall seven and a half meters away, doubled over suddenly. A trickle of blood ran from his nose. He wiped it with the back of his hand and continued looking at me as if nothing had happened.
That night I discovered the brand.
I went into my room and there he was, standing by the closed window. He opened his shirt without haste. Over his heart was a black mark in the exact shape of my fingerprint. It throbbed. It burned.
