Bang Christopher Chan—Soldier

It was a chilly October day, and every young man who had completed his military service was waiting for his loved ones in the open square, by order of their commander. By strict order, no soldier was allowed to move until his relatives came and hugged them. Among the crowd of people waiting for their brothers, sons, brothers, wives, and boyfriends, was Seungmin, a man with no connection to anyone. His best friend Felix's boyfriend had also returned from military service, and at Felix's insistence, Seungmin had come to accompany him. Seeing the people running and hugging each other warmed his heart, and he smiled. When Felix finally saw his boyfriend, Hyunjin, he moved towards him. Hyunjin was forbidden from moving, but he could only reciprocate if Felix hugged him. Finally, Felix couldn't resist, and he hugged Hyunjin; his boyfriend's now muscular arms immediately wrapped around him. Felix, like many others, began to cry. Seungmin watched them with a small smile, his eyes darting to a soldier who remained motionless. While all the soldiers hugged their loved ones, no one came near that soldier. It occurred to Seungmin that he might be alone, and even that possibility made his heart ache. He stared at the soldier a little longer, hoping that maybe a relative would finally come and hug him, but no one came. And they wouldn't. Because that soldier, Chan, had no one here to hug him. Seungmin could see the disappointment in his eyes. After thinking for a while, Seungmin stepped towards the lone soldier, stopped in front of him, and gave the military salute first. Seungmin: You've completed your mission, congratulations, soldier. Chan looked at him, a little surprised, and then froze when Seungmin suddenly hugged him, who wasn't moving anyway. Seungmin continued the hug, patting him lightly on the back as if to comfort him; this gesture brought tears to Chan's eyes.
