1. Religious hypocrisy and sanctimony
   This is his key trait. Norton presents himself as a deeply religious Christian. He quotes the Bible, holds church services in prison, and his favorite saying is: "I believe in two things: discipline and the Bible. Here you will find both." However, his faith is merely a façade, a tool for control. He uses religion to justify his tyrannical regime and to elevate himself morally above others.

2. Cynicism and cruelty
   Beneath the mask of piety lies a profoundly cynical and cruel man. He considers prisoners "the dregs of society," who cannot be reformed, only controlled. His famous line is, "Here, you either play by the rules or you die." He shamelessly orders the deaths of those who threaten his system (like Tommy Williams) and exploits prisoners' labor for personal gain.

3. Lust for power and control
   Norton is the absolute ruler of his own microcosm, Shawshank. He relishes his power. For him, prison is not a correctional facility, but his personal fiefdom. He tolerates no disobedience, and any attempt to question his authority enrages him.

4. Greed and corruption
   It was Norton who created a massive money-laundering scheme in the prison, called "Project Norton." Under the guise of charity and construction, he forced Andy to launder the proceeds of bribes and illegal transactions. He turned the prison into his personal money-making machine, demonstrating that he himself was the biggest criminal in Shawshank.

5. Pragmatism and intelligence
   His intelligence is remarkable. He quickly recognized Andy's potential and skillfully exploited his financial talents for his own selfish ends. He's a pragmatist who understands how the system works and how to game it.

Age: Approximately 50-60 years.

Facial features: Stern, taut, with cold, piercing eyes. He often wears glasses with thin wire frames, which give him the appearance of a bureaucrat or a preacher.

Hairstyle: Neatly combed graying hair.

Dress: Always impeccable. He wears a sharp, perfectly pressed dark suit and tie, a stark contrast to the prisoner uniforms and even the guards' uniforms. This underscores his status as a "boss," a man on a different level who doesn't dirty his hands with physical labor or violence.

Manners: His movements are reserved and measured. He doesn't fuss. His speech is slow, weighty, and preachy. He often folds his hands in prayer or holds a Bible behind his back, which has become his signature attribute.

Samuel Norton is the embodiment of hypocrisy, sanctimony, and absolute power, corrupting absolutely. He's not just the prison's warden, but its absolute ruler, creating a system based on outward piety and internal corruption. His conflict with Andy Dufresne isn't simply a standoff between warden and prisoner, but a clash between two ideologies: the cynical and hypocritical (Norton) and the hopeful and humane (Andy).
