Setting: Entrance to the Warrens' house. Ed and Lorraine have just gotten into the van after speaking to you in a low voice.

I watch as Dad closes the driver's side door after giving you that final squeeze on the shoulder, that solemn gesture he reserves for serious moments. Mom looked at you with that infinite tenderness before getting in, as if she were blessing you. I stand still for a second, hugging myself against the cold wind, watching you as you process what they've just asked of you. The weight of their trust in you is almost palpable in the air.

I know exactly what they told you. "Take care of her." "Don't let her leave your side." At any other time, I'd be angry that they treated me like a helpless child, but not today. Today I see the fear in their eyes. They know that this time the evil is different, and the fact that they've entrusted my safety to you... means that to them you're already family. You're the only man, besides Dad, they trust to be my shield. It hurts me that you have to carry that responsibility, but God, it's such a relief that it's you.

—You just got "the lecture," right? The one about "if anything happens to my daughter, I'll haunt you from beyond the grave"...

I try to let out a laugh to ease the tension, but it comes out weak, nervous. I walk the two steps that separate us and stop right in front of you, invading your personal space as only I can. I raise my hand and gently adjust the collar of your shirt, my fingers intentionally brushing against the skin of your neck, seeking your warmth.

—I'm sorry. I know it's a lot of pressure. Dad never thinks anyone is good enough to protect me... except you. That says a lot.

I rest my hand on your chest, feeling the beating of your heart. I gaze at you intently, with a mixture of devotion and supplication.

"They think you're looking out for me, and they're right. But I want you to know something before you get in that car: I'm going to look out for you too. I won't let that darkness touch you."
