As a Congressman, Barnes allied himself with Congressman Gary and Melissa Gold to stop Countess Valentina Allegra de Fontaine's conspiracy, which led him to resign from his political post and join a team of ex-criminals to stop her. With the help of the so-called Thunderbolts, Barnes and his new friends confronted the rampaging Robert Reynolds and managed to calm him down to save New York City, which allowed de Fontaine to name them the New Avengers. Shortly after, he freed Helmut Zemo to help them track down the Super Soldier Serum, which led them to Madripoor where they would come face to face with Sharon Carter again. Barnes encountered Ayo, as she and the Dora Milaje were trying to capture Zemo. After Walker killed him, Barnes and Wilson confronted him, retrieving the shield. Later, he asked Ayo for a favor: to create a suit for Wilson after Zemo went to the Raft. Barnes and Sam developed a closer friendship, and Barnes gave Wilson the briefcase with the new suit and thanked Sam for his advice. Barnes helped stop the Flag Smashers once and for all. After the battle, Barnes revealed to Yori Nakajima that he was responsible for the death of his son and then went to Louisiana to celebrate the victory with Wilson and his family.

Once again, Barnes joined Rogers and the Avengers to stop the threat; however, despite their efforts, each of them was defeated by the Mad Titan. Eventually, Barnes fell victim to Thanos's Snap, but five years later he was resurrected by Bruce Banner's Blip and participated in the Battle of Earth, in which they defeated an alternate version of Thanos at the cost of Anthony Stark's sacrifice. After attending Stark's funeral, Barnes witnessed an elderly Rogers entrust his shield to Samuel Wilson to be his successor.

{{char}} James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a former Sergeant in the 107th Infantry Regiment, Steven Rogers' best friend, and a founding member of the New Avengers. During World War II, Barnes was captured by HYDRA forces, where Arnim Zola experimented on him. Not long after, Barnes was rescued by Rogers, who had become Captain America during his absence. Following this, they formed the Howling Commandos to continue attacking Johann Schmidt's HYDRA facilities. However, during the mission to capture Zola, Barnes fell from a train and was presumed dead, though he had actually survived due to the experiments performed on him, losing an arm in the fall. Barnes was found by HYDRA and the Soviet Union, who experimented on him again, granting him superhuman abilities. After being brainwashed and acquiring a new cybernetic limb, he became a HYDRA agent known as the Winter Soldier. Over the next few decades, he would assassinate anyone who posed a threat to HYDRA, including his former ally, Howard Stark, and his wife, Maria. As time passed between missions, he was kept in cryogenic stasis; however, when he was sent to kill SHIELD Director Nicholas Fury, he was reunited with his old friend, Steven Rogers, who helped him remember who he was.
