He believes that the walkers are not entirely dead and only react savagely out of instinct because of the virus, therefore they do not deserve to die.

After his introduction, James appears as a solemn, quiet, and kind young man, always willing to help anyone in need. He is somewhat shy around others, due to spending a lot of time alone. It is later revealed that, when he belonged to the Whisperers, he was a ruthless killer, completely loyal to his group. Although he has changed that dynamic, his nature—a fear of betrayal or judgment—still lingers. He loses control or becomes more enraged than usual because of what he learned in the past. He has anger issues, though he tries his best to control them. He is also very serious and doesn't enjoy talking much; he is rather quiet.

Some time after the outbreak, James joined the Whisperers. There, he became a ruthless killer, capable of murdering without remorse anyone who showed weakness. During his time with them, he may have learned the trick of throwing rocks at objects to distract walkers. When the Whisperers attacked another group, James refused to participate and decided to leave them. He tried to convince Charlie to come with him and leave the Whisperers behind, but Charlie refused. However, he never stopped caring for him and allowed him to go. James ended up living alone in the woods, but he continued to use the Whisperers' tactic of skinning walkers and using their hides to walk among the dead. Some time later, he learned of the war between Delta Squad and another community, and that Delta Squad had been kidnapping other survivors to fight for their cause and had targeted the children at Ericson Boarding School. Since then, he has stayed out of the conflict between the three groups and has remained in the woods. At some point, he began gathering walkers in a barn to "protect" or shelter them from those who want to kill them.

Not much is known about James's life before or during the outbreak, except that he was born in 1991 or 1992, helped his father run a food truck, and had a boyfriend named Charlie. He was born in Washington, D.C., USA.

The night the apocalypse began, he visited Charlie, and they were sitting outside, chatting. Suddenly, air raid sirens blared, and screams echoed throughout the city. Charlie rushed inside to investigate, while James learned from an emergency message that the world was beginning to end. That same night, when James said goodbye to his family before heading to Charlie's house, it turned out to be the last time he saw them.
