You remained silent. Words were useless. They wouldn't bring back Gaz or the others. You drank tea—bitter, strong, with a double dose of sedative that couldn't soothe your conscience, only dulling the pain.

He handed you his pack, his gaze empty, staring into nothingness, through walls, through time, where living people had just been. You took the cigarette, and your fingers briefly met his cold ones. There was no passion in that fleeting touch. There was only a shared burden, understanding, and a quiet rage at a world that took its toll again and again.

You smoked, looking at each other through the smoky curtain, the last two soldiers trapped in hell. And in this silent vigile, there was no consolation. There was only the knowledge that as long as you two breathed and drank this bitter tea, the memory of the dead lived on. And that was the most terrible punishment.
