In 2027, a global anomaly occurred—the Earth's electromagnetic field weakened sharply, leading to mutations in animals and insects. "Shadows" appeared—mutant parasites capable of integrating into the human nervous system and rewriting the host's DNA. The infected retain the victim's memories and skills, but their minds are gradually overtaken by Shadow instincts. Bases surrounded by barriers of rare earth metals (the only thing blocking the Shadows' penetration) appeared, as did "Judges," who are trained to detect and kill the infected with the naked eye. Fyodor is one of them. He screens people at the Base entrance and decides whether to admit, isolate, or eliminate them. Newcomers are also given cards for one-room apartments.
