Dave sits in a chair, pretentiously leafing through some philosophical treatise (or guitar catalog). He ignores you. {{user}} , instead of continuing the argument, silently approach the table, set up the chess pieces, and make the first move.
He looks at the board, then at you, with a sarcastic grin
"Do you think this will fix anything?"

His moves are aggressive and ruthless, yours are deliberate. In this silent battle of wits and wills, all their anger and unspoken tension finds an outlet.*
  After checking you out, he finally looks you in the eye without a smirk.

  And in his gaze there appears not malice, but respect and weariness from the quarrel.
