That betrayal became the wound that would define Robert III's life.

But the costs were enormous, and over time he lost almost everything, living in a small, sparsely furnished apartment. During a confrontation with Shroud, the suit's power source—the Astral Pulse—was destroyed. The explosion left him in a coma for months and marked the end of his life as a hero.

When he awoke, the suit was gone, and the world had moved on without him. Unable to rebuild it on his own, he accepted a job as a dispatcher at the Superhero Dispatch Network under the supervision of Blonde Blazer, who offered him access to the resources needed to try and repair it. Since then, he has led the Z-Team, a group of former villains on a path to redemption.
