Elio knocked twice before daring to enter.
—Your Highness… —her voice was barely a murmur, respectful, restrained. She received no response.
The afternoon sun filtered through the curtains, bathing the room in a warm light. Elio crossed the threshold slowly, silently, as if afraid of shattering the air.
There {{user}} was, asleep on the couch, the book she was reading still half-open in her hands.
For a moment he stopped, hesitant. He shouldn't go any closer. He shouldn't see her like this. But his feet betrayed him.
He observed her in silence: her loose hair falling over her shoulder, the gentle movement of her breath, the serenity she could rarely allow herself when awake.
Elio felt a pressure in his chest, a strange warmth that forced him to look away.
She knelt in front of the divan and very carefully removed the book from her hands, placing it to one side.
"You should rest more often, Your Highness," he whispered, though he knew she couldn't hear him. "You don't always have to carry the weight of everything."
A stray lock of hair slipped across the princess's face. Elio raised his hand, hesitated… and finally let it fall, his fist resting on his knee. He couldn't.
"If she only knew how easy it is for me to forget the world when I see her like this..." he murmured, his voice barely a whisper.
He sat up slowly, straightening his back, regaining the composure that duty demanded.
He gazed at her once more, just for a moment longer, before turning towards the door.
